If the recently remodelled bathroom isn't enough to convince you that this home is special, then surely the outstanding location in the neighbourhood of Trevi will do the trick. There is an evident downside, however – we won’t go as far as calling it a kitchen because there is only a hob, sink, and refrigerator, so if you enjoy flexing your culinary muscles, then this is not the home for you. But, in a city like Rome, we won’t expect guests to be doing much cooking in the first place. Instead, go out and try Roman specialities, like Carciofi alla Giudìa, Supplì, and more.

Back at this apartment, designed by a Roman architect and housed in a historical building, there's a wonderful blend of old and new – think character beams, parquet wood floors and modern chandeliers. Paquino is perfectly comfortable, and while it lacks a bit of flair in the design department, it’s pleasant to look at. None of this really matters though, because the big thing going for it is the position, right in the heart of Monti. There are loads of excellent restaurants around (although the kitchen is actually pretty good, easily enough for a decent meal) and you really are in the cobbled streets among the ancient ruins that define the city.

Base yourself in Monti, one of Rome's coolest neighbourhoods. You'll be within walking distance of the Trevi Fountain, the Colosseum, and many independent eateries, putting you within easy reach of all Rome has to offer. The apartment is bright and cosy. Design-wise, it's a bit eclectic, but it's welcoming. There's also a sofa bed for two. That said, the highlight is the balcony and its sweeping views. Just sit back with a coffee or a glass of wine and take in the panoramas of the historic city centre.

Right on the edge of Campo Marzio, Roman Standard is in an enviable position among some of the smartest boutiques in Italy. It’s tucked under the eaves, so it’s worth noting that parts of the ceiling slope down and are therefore quite low. In the end though, this adds to the cosy feel of the whole place – there’s even a fireplace to keep you warm if you’re there during winter (it’s also there in summer, you’re just less likely to need it).

With high ceilings, tonnes of space and beautiful floors (both stone and parquet), Centurion Rose eschews flamboyance for a more elegant, sober aesthetic. The flat isn’t particularly bright – Via Palermo outside is narrow, and has high buildings – but there’s enough light to get by, and the street is beautiful enough that we’ll forgive it. Everything, from the kitchen chairs, to the curtains, to the rainfall shower, is high quality and it all makes sense – functionality isn’t an afterthought.

Climb the original marble staircase up to the top of this elegant eighteenth-century palazzo for a whole new perspective on the Eternal City from your incredible penthouse pad. This modern apartment has been designed to make the most of its stunning setting. It’s in a great location in Monti — one of our favourite parts of the city, famous for vintage shops and undiscovered restaurants — but the interiors are just as much of a draw. The frescoed ceilings are perhaps the most striking element, a welcome nod to the history of both the building and the area, but the brightly coloured walls and touches of modernity — such as the transparent dining chairs and strikingly blue master bathroom — are also appreciated additions. The winning touch is the small balcony just off the kitchen, which has a charming view of the internal courtyard.

Old double doors let the space flow from the living room, to the dining room and a bijou little kitchen. You’re in a prime location here too. Apart from the buzzing pizzeria literally on your doorstep, there is myriad local trattoria serving up plates of carbonara and tiramisu in the historic streets around you. It’s a seven-minute stroll to Piazza di Spanga (where the Spanish Steps are) and the Trevi Fountain is one minute's walk away, showing just how central this apartment is.

Nauticalia is set just a couple of hundred metres from Piazza di Spagna, giving it the perfect location for people who are in Rome to do a bit of that famous sightseeing. The best thing about this city-centre home in a historic Roman building? It has to be its view of the Trevi fountain, the waters of which are, at the most, twenty metres away. While this is a tourist-trodden landmark, you'll certainly have pride of place when you stay in this traditional apartment.

You'll also find all the practical necessities in the well-outfitted kitchen and comfortable bedroom. It can't get more central than this – you'll be within walking distance of the Trevi Fountain, Villa Borghese, and countless eateries. After a long day on your feet, you'll appreciate the indoor Jacuzzi waiting for you back home. The overall design is contemporary and chic, featuring open-concept bathrooms that ooze luxury (though privacy is, of course, limited). Travelling as a group of six? Upon request, two guests can kip on single beds in the living area, but we think this home is best for four.

Cosy and compact, this apartment is an ideal base in Rome. Its location couldn’t be better, just a stone’s throw from the Trevi Fountain, and within walking distance of most of the city’s sights. There are countless restaurants and bars right on your doorstep, which is handy as the kitchenette is more suitable for preparing light bites – you can get your pasta fill nearby instead. The apartment is spread over two floors, with a quiet seating area on the second floor. If you’re hoping for more space and privacy, we’d recommend sticking to a guest count of two, so the sofa bed in the living room isn’t in use.

While not the most famous fountain in Trevi, the Bernini sculpture in Piazza Barberini is a wonderful piece of art – and it's right on your doorstep at this minimalist apartment. Although if you do fancy a trip to one of the ancient city's most beloved sights, the esteemed Trevi Fountain sits just a ten-minute stroll from your door. The home's right in the middle of Rome, but is just far enough away from the major tourist attractions to avoid the most intense crowds. You’ll still have a lot of people around – this is Rome, after all – but that little bit of extra breathing space really makes a difference. Stepping inside to look around at the decor, we really loved the modern stripped-back feel that blends elegance with simplicity. Sit down for a game of cards and a glass of Barolo in the rosy-red velvet upholsteries or sink into the chesterfield sofa in the alternate sitting room for a quiet read. It's a reflection of the illustrious pavements below, with gold-topped tables, artsy mirrors and heaps of rustic charm. Bright and airy, the bedrooms feature large balcony doors that welcome streams of natural light into the space. All three bedrooms are accompanied by en-suite bathrooms, offering swanky bathtubs and walk-in shower rooms that add that extra level of comfort. Sleek, stylish and slap-bang in the heart of Rome.

Few places in Rome capture the imagination like Monti’s warrens of independent shops and neighbourhood trattorias. Centurion Brick is on one of the main district's thoroughfares, and while the streets below can get busy, that’s a small price to pay for such a great spot. You're also just a thirteen-minute walk from the Colosseum. From the lively locale to the traditional buildings, there's a real authentic vibe around Monti that we really love – it's the perfect stay for those looking to peel back the curtain on the world's most ancient city. Another thing worth knowing is that there are actually several flats in the building, so Centurion Brick can actually work for much larger groups, assuming that some of the other places are free at the same time. Inside, the home is fresh and functional with sleek mid-century furnishings, Roman-red wallpaper and elegant Kartell chairs. It's a great option if location is your number one priority and you'd like the luxury of having individual bedrooms accompanied by swanky en-suite bathrooms.

A three-minute walk from the Trevi Fountain, this apartment is the ideal place to stay whether you’re a first-time visitor to Rome or a return traveller. If you’re keen to venture outside your neighbourhood, the Barberini metro station is just up the road. Inside, the home has a fully equipped kitchen, a desk for remote workers and a Jacuzzi bathtub for soaking away the day. Plus, your host can provide private chef services and breakfast deliveries so you can spend more time with your feet up. 


A Note From Rome

It doesn’t get more central than this fuss-free apartment. You’ll be moments from the Spanish Steps, so close you can actually glimpse the monument's tower from the small Romeo and Juliet balcony. While it's not the most modern home, we think it works well for couples. Two guests will sleep on a sofa bed, while the others will kip on the mezzanine underneath the rustic beams. The kitchen is compact but well-appointed, though it’s best suited to antipasti rather than full meals. For those who want to spend most of their time sightseeing, it’s a good option.

Sofa beds in apartments are often optimistic, a way to shoehorn in a few more people and get a few more bookings, but it’s a different story with Centurion Pink. Although two guests would be in the living room, it’s practically a bedroom in its own right (albeit without doors), so the flat is easily big enough for six. There’s a welcoming atmosphere as soon as you step in the door, and while there are a few flourishes, the interior amplifies the feeling of calm.

You can tell fairly early on that a lot of thought has gone into the decorating of Centurion Honey. It’s comfortable, with most of the amenities and appliances you could need, and the sofa bed doesn’t feel like a compromise, which is something of a rarity in Rome. The interiors are simple, but the calming tones give a sense of serenity that contrasts with the bustle of the Monti streets below – a welcome respite.
