The apartment is on the fourth floor of the building, so you’ll be able to admire a view of the city’s rooftops from the terrace. This loft apartment is warm and welcoming, with a chic, open layout. The bedroom is at mezzanine level above the living and dining space, so you’ll need to be able to manage the stairs to stay here.

Set in a gorgeous 20th-century building only a five-minute walk from the Piazza di Spagna, this home delivers on location in spades. You're surrounded by mouth-watering restaurants, traditional cafes and upscale shops, not to mention all the museums, landmarks (including The Spanish Steps and the Trevi Fountain) and galleries within walking distance. Spend an afternoon wandering Rome's cobbled streets before enjoying an aperitif at one of the trendy bars in this neighbourhood. When you've had your fun for the day, retreat home to this bright and roomy apartment. Inside, it's uncluttered and minimal, which only enhances the relaxing atmosphere. Our favourite spot is the long balcony, which is shaded from the Italian sun by a leafy trellis. Base yourself in Monti, one of Rome's coolest neighbourhoods. You'll be within walking distance of the Trevi Fountain, the Colosseum, and many independent eateries, putting you within easy reach of all Rome has to offer. The apartment is bright and cosy. Design-wise, it's a bit eclectic, but it's welcoming. There's also a sofa bed for two. That said, the highlight is the balcony and its sweeping views. Just sit back with a coffee or a glass of wine and take in the panoramas of the historic city centre.

Paquino is perfectly comfortable, and while it lacks a bit of flair in the design department, it’s pleasant to look at. None of this really matters though, because the big thing going for it is the position, right in the heart of Monti. There are loads of excellent restaurants around (although the kitchen is actually pretty good, easily enough for a decent meal) and you really are in the cobbled streets among the ancient ruins that define the city.

Just a few steps from the Trevi Fountain, it's a short stroll from restaurants, shops, and must-see landmarks – that's about as central as it gets. Nauticalia is set just a couple of hundred metres from Piazza di Spagna, giving it the perfect location for people who are in Rome to do a bit of that famous sightseeing. That’s not the only thing going for it, as the apartment boasts some lovely design elements, such as the frescoed ceiling or the marine theme in the bathroom, and the huge beds will keep you comfortable. The kitchen, despite having some wonderful exposed brickwork, is pretty small and basic, but there are so many places to eat in the area that you won’t even notice.

Perfectly positioned in the heart of Rome, this contemporary pad is in a pretty unbeatable location. The city's endless array of restaurants, shops and museums are a short walk away, but that's not the only reason we love this neighbourhood. You can wander to the Trevi Fountain in six minutes, stroll through the tremendous Villa Borghese in ten, and shop for provincial produce in Campo de' Fiori in twenty-five minutes, flat. Gives a whole new meaning to the saying 'when in Rome', doesn't it?

After a busy day of sightseeing, pour yourself a glass of red wine and unwind with some locally-sourced gastronomic goodies in the open-plan living area. Decorated in soft cream shades and featuring sumptuous sofas and traditionally-shuttered windows, the lounge radiates relaxation and charm. The kitchen isn't the biggest in our collection, but it's well-equipped if you're in the mood to rustle up a light breakfast or quick lunch. Right on the edge of Campo Marzio, Roman Standard is in an enviable position among some of the smartest boutiques in Italy. It’s tucked under the eaves, so it’s worth noting that parts of the ceiling slope down and are therefore quite low. In the end though, this adds to the cosy feel of the whole place – there’s even a fireplace to keep you warm if you’re there during winter (it’s also there in summer, you’re just less likely to need it).

Upon request, two guests can kip on single beds in the living area, but we think this home is best for four.

If the recently remodelled bathroom isn't enough to convince you that this home is special, then surely the outstanding location in the neighbourhood of Trevi will do the trick. There is an evident downside, however – we won’t go as far as calling it a kitchen because there is only a hob, sink, and refrigerator, so if you enjoy flexing your culinary muscles, then this is not the home for you. But, in a city like Rome, we won’t expect guests to be doing much cooking in the first place. Instead, go out and try Roman specialities, like Carciofi alla Giudìa, Supplì, and more.

Sometimes when looking for a place to stay in a foreign city, you have to make a decision about what to prioritise, but this Roman apartment has all the bases covered. It’s in a great location in Monti — one of our favourite parts of the city, famous for vintage shops and undiscovered restaurants — but the interiors are just as much of a draw. The frescoed ceilings are perhaps the most striking element, a welcome nod to the history of both the building and the area, but the brightly coloured walls and touches of modernity — such as the transparent dining chairs and strikingly blue master bathroom — are also appreciated additions. The winning touch is the small balcony just off the kitchen, which has a charming view of the internal courtyard.

The undoubted star of the show is the incredible rooftop terrace, complete with a vast seating area and sun canopy, Jacuzzi, and dining area. We can't think of any reason not to spend every waking hour up here. When you can tear yourself away to explore the charismatic capital, you'll find yourself right in the thick of things at the Piazza Venezia end of Via del Corso, Rome's main shopping street. Seven minutes' walk will get you to postcard-perfect sights like the Trevi Fountain and Pantheon. At the same time, you can reach the ancient Roman site on Palatine Hill in fifteen minutes. The best thing about this city-centre home in a historic Roman building? It has to be its view of the Trevi fountain, the waters of which are, at the most, twenty metres away. While this is a tourist-trodden landmark, you'll certainly have pride of place when you stay in this traditional apartment.

Admirers of wonderfully kitsch decor will love this home, where ditsy patterned wallpaper and antique furniture take centre stage. You'll also find all the practical necessities in the well-outfitted kitchen and comfortable bedroom. After a long day of walking over the seven hills of Rome, this is the perfect spot to kick back and enjoy a good night's sleep.

You're well placed to visit the plethora of iconic monuments and landmarks in this historic capital. The Pantheon is just an eight-minute walk away, while you can reach the must-see Colosseum in twenty minutes on foot. You'll pass plenty of pastry shops and cafés en route to refuel.

It doesn’t get more central than this fuss-free apartment. You’ll be moments from the Spanish Steps, so close you can actually glimpse the monument's tower from the small Romeo and Juliet balcony. While it's not the most modern home, we think it works well for couples. Two guests will sleep on a sofa bed, while the others will kip on the mezzanine underneath the rustic beams. The kitchen is compact but well-appointed, though it’s best suited to antipasti rather than full meals. For those who want to spend most of their time sightseeing, it’s a good option.

Sweet Juliette

Soft colours anchor Centurion Flax’s interior – a savvy decision that prevents anything from overshadowing the beautiful frescoes on the ceiling. As a whole, it’s a relaxing, grown-up place, never brash, and with an air of quality to the furniture and fittings. There’s also a small balcony, looking out onto Via Palermo, but it’s too small to spend a lot of time outside. Besides, there are so many interesting bars and cafes around that if you were after aperitivo or breakfast, you aren’t short of options.

You're also just a thirteen-minute walk from the Colosseum. From the lively locale to the traditional buildings, there's a real authentic vibe around Monti that we really love – it's the perfect stay for those looking to peel back the curtain on the world's most ancient city. Another thing worth knowing is that there are actually several flats in the building, so Centurion Brick can actually work for much larger groups, assuming that some of the other places are free at the same time. Inside, the home is fresh and functional with sleek mid-century furnishings, Roman-red wallpaper and elegant Kartell chairs. It's a great option if location is your number one priority and you'd like the luxury of having individual bedrooms accompanied by swanky en-suite bathrooms.

Designed with space and comfort in mind, this apartment offers a bit more privacy than your usual holiday home, without sacrificing communal space. Each of the colourful rooms has an en-suite bathroom, a kitchenette and a TV, so you will have everything you need for a sweet stay in Rome. Of course, you still have a bright, clutter-free living room and kitchen that's perfect for continental breakfasts in the sun – you can even have your breakfast brought up to you for a small additional cost. Light pours in through the Juliet balcony, illuminating a modern, airy and minimalist space that we think has somewhat of a contemporary Scandi feel to it. With high ceilings, tonnes of space and beautiful floors (both stone and parquet), Centurion Rose eschews flamboyance for a more elegant, sober aesthetic. The flat isn’t particularly bright – Via Palermo outside is narrow, and has high buildings – but there’s enough light to get by, and the street is beautiful enough that we’ll forgive it. Everything, from the kitchen chairs, to the curtains, to the rainfall shower, is high quality and it all makes sense – functionality isn’t an afterthought.

There’s no better way to embrace the history of Rome than to stay in a former 17th-century palace. This apartment’s building embraces the spirit of the “grandezza romana” with its ornate doorway just next to a local pizzeria and marble statues in the ancient stairwell. Stepping into the apartment itself you’re met with grand, high ceilings and a traditional parquet floor. Old double doors let the space flow from the living room, to the dining room and a bijou little kitchen. You’re in a prime location here too. Apart from the buzzing pizzeria literally on your doorstep, there is myriad local trattoria serving up plates of carbonara and tiramisu in the historic streets around you. A Note From Rome

Sofa beds in apartments are often optimistic, a way to shoehorn in a few more people and get a few more bookings, but it’s a different story with Centurion Pink. Although two guests would be in the living room, it’s practically a bedroom in its own right (albeit without doors), so the flat is easily big enough for six. There’s a welcoming atmosphere as soon as you step in the door, and while there are a few flourishes, the interior amplifies the feeling of calm.
