The idyllic outdoor space is the perfect blend of the two, providing a rustic vibe tinged with deluxe furnishings. Where you spend most of your time depends on your mood and the weather. 

During sunny, summer days, while away the hours in the dreamy space around the pool. Tropical plant life faces into fresh water, creating an exotic oasis, kissed by the summer rays. 

When the months turn cold and you fancy a snug setting, the basement is a restful haven. Rustic, wooden furniture is encompassed by stone walls and a tiled floor. It's an intimate spot to gather for meal times, sharing homemade spaghetti in your secret bunker.

If you’re looking for local immersion in a quintessentially Tuscan home, you've found it. Once the lowly hayloft of a country retreat for nobles, it’s been elevated to something wonderful. It’s rustic – think exposed brick, cooling stone floors and original wood beams – but with the kind of luxe touches that wouldn’t look out of place in a Renaissance townhouse. We love the juxtaposition of homely vibes with ornate flourishes. Who knew chandeliers could look so good in a barn? Set on a private estate, with lush gardens all around, the owners are your only neighbours. Signora Rosa will welcome you with open arms (and maybe even a slice of homemade torta), and the whole family is on hand to help, while also respecting your privacy. There are two complimentary bicycles available for guests, making the five-minute walk to the local town even quicker. Here you can pick up groceries to cook up an alfresco feast; you’ll want to make use of the pretty, shaded outdoor dining area with views over the immaculate grounds. There’s even a wood-fired pizza oven, so you’d better start practising your dough spinning. We’d happily hole up in this place for a week or two, but with a car, it’s the perfect base for exploring Tuscany.

Lucca is ideal day-tripping distance away at a half-hour drive, and the fifteen-minute drive into Montecatini Terme sees you at supermarkets to stock up on supplies. 

Let’s start with that view, particularly from the outdoor dining table on the lawn – a patchwork of fields and orange-roofed towns in the valley below stretches for miles. A turquoise rectangle of swimming pool invites you for a dip in the heat of the day. The bird-cage-style seating area on the edge of the hillside is a particularly nice touch, especially for a sundowner looking out over the valley.

Honey-hued stonework and bricks on the outside give off that traditionally Tuscan aesthetic and inside you’ll find an open living space beneath a timber-beamed ceiling. This one’s for the foodies as there are three kitchens to choose from, including the summer kitchen outside. The area is teeming with olive oil producers, farmers markets and vineyards so you’ll want to spend days cooking, feasting and relaxing.

Set on an estate dotted with trees, shrubs, and other native foliage, this home ecompasses the entire first floor of an ancient villa in Orentano. Despite sharing things like the pool, tennis court, and soccer field with another home, there is enough room on the property for it to still feel private. That’s probably helped along by the fact that you have your own private garden and barbecue – not to mention the sheer size of the home itself. Move easily between rooms and use the easy go-between as an excuse to nip into the kitchen for another cup of coffee and a dozen more biscotti to take back to where you’re reading on the plush sofa. Take the spiral staircase up to the loft where you’ll find the rustic bedrooms and bathrooms for when you’re ready to turn in at night. When you think loft, you might conjure up images of a tight squeeze, but the addition of the skylights in almost every room here allows the light to make the space feel more open. 

With the host and his family living on the estate, you’ll sometimes find yourself around the table enjoying their homemade pasta alfresco with soft music playing in the background. There’s also a brick pizza oven here, so don’t be surprised if you eat more margarita than you’d care to – we know, that is not even remotely possible. 

When you’re not enjoying the home, you can make a trip to Pisa, Voltera, or Florence – each with their unique charm – or borrow the bicycles and simply explore the surroundings on two wheels instead of four. After a day of activity under the Tuscan sun, take a late-night swim in the heated pool, and when you’re ready to return inside, why not linger a little while longer to gaze up at the stars.

Opulence is the name of the game here, and we were immediately seduced by this home’s charm. Firstly, its setting is truly idyllic, with stunning vistas of rolling green hills, punctuated by dark and majestic cypress trees. Evenings are particularly enchanting, and you’ll no doubt find yourself organising elegant suppers and aperitivos, with the glow of the setting sun as your backdrop. The covered, outdoor dining area invites those communal feasts, with the laid-back, dolce-far-niente vibe. In the heat of the afternoon sun, you can cool yourself in the lovely swimming pool, and work on your tan on one of the sun loungers dotted around. 

The inside of the villa is a stunning mélange of classic Italian style with modern comfort. We love the incredible attention to detail with which the interior has been decorated, and you’ll find yourself wandering around these rooms, admiring the art and the unique pieces scattered about. There is more than enough space to lounge about, with comfy sofas and chairs, and you can also enjoy sumptuous indoor feasts in the large dining room.

Okay, the pool is communal, so you’ll be sharing this idyll with other guests. But the views looking up to the medieval village of San Gennaro are beautiful and more than make up for this. The apartment itself is on the upper floor, so benefits from views over the Tuscan countryside. The bathrooms are a little dated perhaps, but the rest of the home has a cosy, traditional feel. When you fancy exploring, nearby Lucca has a whole host of treasures to discover or take a twenty-minute hike up the hill to San Gennaro.

This farmhouse villa is an ideal base for exploring some gorgeous Tuscan cities and towns. Made up of a main house and a hayloft with its own living room and kitchen, there's plenty of space for a family or group of friends to stretch out. We think a couple of areas could do with a touch-up, especially in the hayloft, but the views over the Compitese hills from the private pool are lovely. You'll want a car for exploring, and there's no shortage of hot spots like Lucca, Pisa, and Florence nearby.

A scenic drive through olive groves brings you to this apartment housed in a 14th-century farmhouse. You can relax by the shared pool or in the beautiful communal gardens. We love the views down the valley toward Lucca from here. The apartment itself has beautiful vistas of the neighbouring vineyards and olive groves from virtually every room. There’s a blend of modern furnishings and original features, such as the chestnut beams, creating a homely atmosphere. And there’s plenty to do out and about. Have a twenty-minute hike up the hill to San Gennaro, where you can visit the local trattorias. The area is also surrounded by well-marked paths perfect for exploring the Tuscan landscape or have a drive over to Lucca.

Decadent in every sense of the word, this villa in the Tuscan countryside is a dream come true, as far as we're concerned. Owned by a bespoke interior designer, it should come as no surprise that every room is a treasure trove, filled with plush furniture, eclectic knick-knacks, antique furniture and that unique designer touch that makes it sing. Historic character is around every corner – we're particularly fond of the wooden beams and brick ceilings – but all the mod-cons are accounted for, including a stunning chef's kitchen perfect for meal prepping and small, luxurious bathrooms complete with rainfall showers.

But there's no denying that the garden is the best part of all. Romantic and magical, we'd happily spend all our time out here, admiring the medieval architecture of the 10th-century church next door. While away lazy afternoons swimming in the private pool, sunbathing on the lounge chairs and reading in the gazebo. Come dinnertime, share an Italian feast and a bottle of Tuscan wine under the leafy pergola as the night falls, surrounded by twinkling fairy lights. When you're ready to venture out, Tuscany's main sights are all reachable by car – including Florence, Lucca and Pistoia – but we're just as happy to stay local and discover Montecarlo's traditional eateries, wineries and medieval fortress.

Driving up you'll spot the extraordinary facade, with its terracotta tiles, arched windows and Juliet balconies. The barn's old ventilating tiles have been cleverly maintained, with windows behind. And inside, there are tiled floors, beamed ceilings and shuttered windows. The decor is classically Tuscan, with antique furnishings, vintage paintings and a casual, country elegance. 

We love the farmhouse kitchen here. Stocked with everything you could need, it flows through to the rest of the living space. There's a glass dining table for formal indoor meals and access out to a charming covered terrace at the side of the house. 

Step outside and you can wander in the grounds, among olive trees and fragrant flowers – all the while taking in those incredible views. And it's here that you'll find the private pool. Pick your sunlounger, grab your book and prepare to spend hours on end thoroughly relaxing in this idyllic spot. There's even a pergola by the pool if you need to seek some shade in the heat of the midday sun.

Just a short walk from the nearest restaurant and a short drive from the pretty village of Montecarlo, it's not as remote here as it may feel. Drive into Lucca for some sightseeing, or head further afield to the beach at Lido di Camaiore or to the famous city of Pisa.
