This charming apartment is located in perfect tranquillity inside a converted ancient palace, where the environment has been impeccably refurbished whilst respecting the original structure. We love how much greenery surrounds this home, and how it can make you appreciate the simple things in life as you take a long walk through the flora, breathing in the fresh air and listening to the bird's chirp. The wooden beams definitely give this home the character it deserves, as do the shutters that can be opened to let in light as you gaze out over the trees of an ancient noble villa.
 
When you want to be a part of the city's hustle and bustle, take the sixteen-minute drive to Lucca and bike along the city walls, losing yourself in the history of what would've been, before indulging in some retail therapy in the Old Town. Admire Piazza dell'Anfiteatro, a magnificent square constructed on the ruins of the ancient Roman amphitheatre that spreads a mix of historical beauty and true Italian flavour – stop for a bite to eat in the courtyard with innumerable cafes and restaurants.

Whereas most homes give you a single terrace if you're lucky, this Tuscan property spoils you with outdoor spaces. As well as a lounge given some shade by a large parasol, there's also a separate deck with an alfresco dining table and a stone barbecue, plus another area that holds a swimming pool.

Although we're betting you'll be spending most of your time in the open air, the interior is also pleasing to the eye as well. Through the arched doorways, guests will be greeted by a rustic interior, complete with cooling tiles on the floor, patterned walls in the kitchen and lots of botanical-themed artwork dotted about the place.

The local village of Vellano can be reached in around ten minutes' stroll and has a couple of restaurants for when you get peckish. Further afield, there are Tuscan towns that can be reached in under an hour's drive, such as Montecatini Terme, Lucca and Pistoia. If you're up for a slightly longer journey, Florence is only an hour and twenty minutes' drive from the home.

Many classic Tuscan recipes aren't overly complex but rely on the very best ingredients to reach culinary ecstasy. A similar principle can be seen at play in this villa found in the hills close to Lucca.

Part of an estate that dates back to the seventeenth century, the interior is traditional in style, with chequered tiled floors, wooden ceiling beams and fresco-styled paintings hanging on the clay walls. The kitchen is a more modern affair and the chandeliers add a touch of razzle-dazzle.

However, the real standout feature has to be the swimming pool surrounded by loungers and umbrellas perfect for dozy afternoons. As the property sits 350 metres above sea level, there's a pretty dreamy view of grapevines and olive farms to be enjoyed from the outdoor space.

The nearest town is Ponte a Moriano, which can be reached in five minutes in the car and has a handful of restaurants. The historic city of Lucca is a twenty-minute drive, while the coastal destination of Viareggio takes three-quarters of an hour to reach.

Decadent in every sense of the word, this villa in the Tuscan countryside is a dream come true, as far as we're concerned. Owned by a bespoke interior designer, it should come as no surprise that every room is a treasure trove, filled with plush furniture, eclectic knick-knacks, antique furniture and that unique designer touch that makes it sing. Historic character is around every corner – we're particularly fond of the wooden beams and brick ceilings – but all the mod-cons are accounted for, including a stunning chef's kitchen perfect for meal prepping and small, luxurious bathrooms complete with rainfall showers.

But there's no denying that the garden is the best part of all. Romantic and magical, we'd happily spend all our time out here, admiring the medieval architecture of the 10th-century church next door. While away lazy afternoons swimming in the private pool, sunbathing on the lounge chairs and reading in the gazebo. Come dinnertime, share an Italian feast and a bottle of Tuscan wine under the leafy pergola as the night falls, surrounded by twinkling fairy lights. When you're ready to venture out, Tuscany's main sights are all reachable by car – including Florence, Lucca and Pistoia – but we're just as happy to stay local and discover Montecarlo's traditional eateries, wineries and medieval fortress.

If you’re looking for a relaxing escape in Tuscany, then this renovated stone house is sure to fit the bill. Not only does this home have amazing valley views, but there’s an outdoor pool and terrace as well as an indoor swimming pool and sauna. The living space and kitchen are packed with character features such as beams. And the bedrooms have more wonderful vistas of the Tuscan countryside and the towns of the Svizzera Pesciatina, such as Sorana which can easily be explored. Other places worth visiting within driving distance include Montecarlo, Montecatini Alto and Lucca.

Here you’ll find attractions such as the cathedral, Piazza Anfiteatro, and Piazza San Michele, as well as many restaurants, cafes and boutiques.If you don't want to drive, there's a restaurant a short stroll away, too.

The Hilltop Farmhouse

This rustic farmhouse surrounded by picturesque hills makes for a restful Tuscan retreat. The interiors are a little dated in parts, but perfectly comfortable for a rural stay – the dining room with panoramic windows is a highlight. Outside, the terrace offers swing seats, loungers and a dining area, so you can maximise every moment with those country views. The unpaved track to this house is a little tricky to navigate, so it’s not the best for low-suspension cars. Nearby you’ll find Pescia’s authentic restaurants and shops, while Lucca lies less than 25km away should you feel like a day in the city.

The apartment itself is on the upper floor, so benefits from views over the Tuscan countryside. The bathrooms are a little dated perhaps, but the rest of the home has a cosy, traditional feel. It’s just 3 kilometres from the old town of Lucca, so you can easily stroll to the Walls and explore the city. Hike or cycle through quaint villages, possibly stopping at a vineyard or two.
