Set just footsteps from the Duomo and buzzy San Lorenzo market, you’re right in the thick of things at this Florentine bolthole. Not that you’d know it sat under the umbrella of its private suntrap terrace – it’s a surprisingly peaceful spot for coffees and aperitivos. While we love the character and flair, this home has its quirks. The single bedroom will be a squeeze with little floor space (although the en-suite is a perk), and the last two guests will be sleeping on a sofa bed in the living room. It’s also worth noting that the kitchen is pocket-sized. But for a one-of-a-kind home this central, we’ll take that.

In the green hills of Mugello, this villa offers the peace and tranquillity of the countryside but is just a forty-minute drive from Florence. Head to Italy’s capital of culture to explore the endless collections of the Ufizzi and dine overlooking the Ponte Vecchio. 

The home itself is traditionally stone-built, with the wooden ceilings on show, an old hearth in the dining room and the farm’s well still on display. Sprawling grounds house a swimming pool with a view over the rolling hills beyond, and a rustic-style loggia for outdoor dining – perfect when you're serving something cooked with fresh vegetables straight from the home's veggie patch. The stone-built, wood-fired barbecue is ideal for summer evenings. 

Apart from Tuscan farmhouse tradition, inside you’ll find some vintage touches like a wireless radio from the early 20th century, and antique furnishings. The old kitchen has been preserved with museum-like care (with a traditional bread over that still works), but the modern kitchen is a sleek, professional affair with slate-grey units and a huge island at its core. 

The town of Scarperia e San Piero is a four-minute drive away to stock up on supplies and there’s even a country restaurant just behind this home if you don’t fancy driving.

This Tuscan Villa caught our eye for its lush garden, surrounded by trees – you’ll certainly feel like you’ve escaped to the country when you’re lounging by the pool here. Located in the Mugello Valley, you’re a short drive from Borgo San Lorenzo, where you’ll find shops and restaurants, and 36 kilometres from the ever-popular Florence. While the kitchen area is small and there isn’t a huge amount of space for preparing meals, there’s a barbecue outside and the covered loggia is perfect for alfresco dining.

It’s an excellent area for cycling, with bikes and e-bikes available for hire – exploring the scenic routes and nearby vineyards is a delightful way to spend a day. The apartment features a vaulted roof and simple, fuss-free decor. It’s a comfortable and charming base for a holiday, and you’ll have access to the communal gardens and heated plunge pool – what more could you ask for?

This former hunting lodge was once used by the wealthy and powerful Medici family. Steeped in history, it sits in the green hills of the Florentine Mugello, with its own large gardens surrounded by vineyards. There are remnants of the past everywhere, with ancient beamed ceilings, archways and tiled floors, but it's been carefully brought up to date with an eclectic mix of vintage and modern furnishings. And need we point out those fabulous chandeliers in some of the bedrooms? Take the sweeping steps down to the pool or pull up a lounger amid the scented flowers and lemon trees. Walking in the garden here, you’ll also find an area dedicated to aromatic herbs – the perfect addition to a Tuscan lunch in the dining area under a wisteria-covered pergola. It's just a short drive to the freshwater oasis of Lake Bilancino and a day trip to Florence is no more than forty minutes away by car.

When you're ready to explore, hop in the car and take a day trip to Florence – it's just 30 kilometres away.

Just a twenty-five-minute drive from this famous track, and an hour from Florence, this rustic villa is a charming escape to rural life. Set on sloped, landscaped gardens with leafy trees, trailing foliage, and bright Mediterranean flowers, its traditional airs give way to some playful features. Keep the kids entertained with football on the five-a-side pitch in the garden, or head inside via the basement for foosball and a vintage pinball machine (‘big kids’ also welcome). Some might prefer a swim in the private pool, or sipping a negroni on one of the multiple patios, the choice is yours. You’ll also have plenty of choice for indoor relaxation, with three living rooms – one for every floor – and a delightful terrace upstairs where you can sip your espresso every morning. This stone farmhouse on a countryside estate dating back to the Middle Ages is as Tuscan as it gets. Inside, the interiors are a little fussy in places (as is the traditional Italian way), but you can’t argue with the sense of space the home brings. It’s a ten-minute stroll into the centre where you’ll find restaurants, cafés and archaeological museums beyond the ancient town walls. The apartment itself is housed in a striking 16th-century building just outside the bridge that leads to il Castello. Wood beams on display hark back to the building’s roots, but the decor is decidedly modern. An open space in a sixteenth-century building, in the hilly outskirts of Florence that, at time at times, has been both a stables and a nightclub, Thermae is one of the most spectacular places we’ve seen in Italy. Its restoration has been a labour of love for the host, Giovanni, and the way that he’s incorporated technology into the original structure is simply impressive. There’s too much to describe here, but know that everything's been taken care of. And if we did have to choose one thing that stood out, it might have to be the pool, hidden away in the vaults, and only accessible through a trapdoor.

It may be less than a thirty-minute drive from the spectacular Renaissance city of Florence, but this home feels like another world. Located up in the hills, you'll discover a spectacular villa – complete with a clock tower – just outside the small village of Cellai, where time seems to stand still. 

Pad across terracotta-tiled floors, with wood beam ceilings above, and discover rooms filled with character and charm, where period features and modern touches sit effortlessly alongside one another. Nowhere is this better displayed than in the contemporary kitchen and adjoining dining room with its antique stove.
