This ancient Tuscan hamlet (or ‘borgo’) sits atop a hill, with views over the countryside as far as the eye can see. On a clear day, you can catch a glimpse of Corsica on the horizon. Surrounded by olive groves, organic vegetable gardens, ancient trees and donkey paddocks, this is the place to immerse yourself in provincial Italian life. Plus, the cities of Pisa and Lucca are within day-tripping distance.

Designed by architect Stefano Viviani, this villa blends into the landscape seamlessly. The wooden terrace juts out of the hillside, allowing for panoramic views of the countryside sprawling before you, from the cool of the plunge pool or the soothing heat of the hot tub. Loungers and reclining chairs are set up the face the view and there’s shaded dining and a lounge area on the lower terrace.

Inside, you can see the work of an architect on display in every handmade step, wall of windows and traditional-style fireplace. It’s a vision of soft greys and white, with picture-frame windows at every turn to display the view as proudly as any of the donkey-themed modern artworks on the walls. Sculptures are displayed with museum-level curation, in glass boxes, and the coffee table is littered with thick art books. The kitchen, beneath a wooden ceiling, is an ode to rusticana with a huge island in the centre, yet feels modern in dove grey and light wood. Then there are the bedrooms, both boasting panoramic views from walls of windows the instant you wake up.

Whether you're enjoying a glass of wine on the terrace or floating in the shared swimming pool, the mountain views here are sure to set the scene for an unforgettable stay in the Province of Lucca. Early risers can savour an espresso in the morning sunshine on the terrace and in the evenings, you can fire up the barbecue and dig into an alfresco feast as the day slowly fades. Located on the outskirts of Camaiore, surrounded by fields, this home is a great choice for anyone looking for a quiet location with amenities nearby. You’re just 2.4 kilometres from the town, where you’ll find an ancient walled city, cobbled streets, and plenty of restaurants, and for days at the beach, sandy Lido di Camaiore is an 8.5 kilometre drive away. The home itself boasts a private pool (above ground) and a shaded alfresco dining area. While the traditional decor inside won’t be everyone’s cup of tea – the bathrooms in particular feel a little dated – the wooden beams and exposed stonework certainly add character.

Set among a spectacular array of fruit trees and bushes in its gardens, the scents of lavender, lemon, orange, and rose are thick in the air. With multiple levelled terraces, you can survey your lush kingdom from the top of the castle. You might find yourself particularly drawn to the glimmering, private pool on the lower level. Give your subjects (or family) a wave from the top, before heading down into the historic interiors. 

Exposed masonry, flagstone floors, and vintage furnishings complete the look in the lounge. But the kitchen is surprisingly modern, with glossy chrome fixtures and marble floors keeping that luxe edge. We are fairly certain you'll spend most of your time in the gardens – swimming in the pristine pool, soaking up the Tuscan sun from the poolside loungers, enjoying indulgent spreads of burrata, sweet Italian tomatoes and local charcuteries at the outdoor dining room, preparing crispy pizzas in the terrace pizza oven for your loved ones, and finally, sipping Sangiovese on the plump outdoor sofas come sunset – bliss.

Despite its quiet location, the area is surrounded by rolling vineyards, medieval hamlets and breathtaking lakes, such as Lago di Massaciuccoli, a short drive away. We suggest a trip to the birthplace of Madame Butterfly and Tosca – Puccini’s former home and now a museum displaying the composer’s works.

Only a 100-metre stroll from Marina di Pietrasanta's beach, this villa is made for coastal-loving families. With the sea in walking distance and cities like Pisa and Lucca not far by car, we reckon most of your time will be spent exploring. But, if you're keen to enjoy a more relaxed pace, there's plenty to appreciate back home, too. The private terrace and small garden are perfect for relaxing with a glass of wine in the fresh air. Indoors, there's a cosy living room, a well-equipped kitchen, and three comfortable bedrooms – although air conditioning is only available in the hallway. We think it makes a great option for a Tuscan seaside retreat.
