You'll love the views from this traditional villa in Garfagnana. Sweeping across the mountains in Castelnuovo Garfagnana towards Lucca in the south, it'll be hard to take your eyes off the rolling scenery. The best spot for gazing? We reckon it's the private pool, though the outlook from the loggia and terrace is just as lovely. It's not the most modern home, but it has a lot of heart – the rooms are cosy, comfortable, and packed with character. The location is convenient for exploring the area, too. Lucca, Barga, Castelnuovo Garfagnana, and many more hidden gems are easily discoverable by car.

This stone cottage in the Tuscan hills boasts views across the surrounding mountains and valleys. Set in a secluded spot on the edge of a large village, you’ll have peace and quiet here, with the convenience of shops, restaurants, and bars within walking distance, as well as a trio of historic towns – Barga, Borgo a Mozzano, and Bagni di Lucca – within a thirty-minute drive. The private pool may be small, but the panoramic countryside views from the water more than make up for that. Inside, the two bedrooms are separated by a bamboo wall so they aren’t the most private – we think this home is best suited to a couple or family.

You'll find this apartment set in the bucolic gardens of a grand Italian estate in rural Lucca. Part of a farmhouse dating back to the 1400s, the space has been carefully reimagined into a family-friendly home full of character. Outside, there’s a private garden area for alfresco apéritifs, and in the wider communal grounds, woodland walks aplenty. Ready for a taste of Tuscan life? You’ll need a car to explore the nearby ancient towns of Barga, Coreglia, Lucca and Ghivizzano. Though Piano di Coreglia, with its cluster of local trattorias and shops, is walkable if you’ve not got little ones in tow.

Located just a short walk from the centre of Florence, this Santa Maria Novella ticks all the important boxes for us, making it a functional base for city exploring. The fully equipped kitchen and large dining table let you enjoy a hearty breakfast before you head into town, and we like that the home gets plenty of natural light – always a nice way to start the day. When you want to explore, you'll find Strozzi Palace close by, as well as Florence Santa Maria Novella station, connecting you to the rest of Tuscany and beyond.

Set on an estate dotted with trees, shrubs, and other native foliage, this home ecompasses the entire first floor of an ancient villa in Orentano. Despite sharing things like the pool, tennis court, and soccer field with another home, there is enough room on the property for it to still feel private. That’s probably helped along by the fact that you have your own private garden and barbecue – not to mention the sheer size of the home itself. Move easily between rooms and use the easy go-between as an excuse to nip into the kitchen for another cup of coffee and a dozen more biscotti to take back to where you’re reading on the plush sofa. Take the spiral staircase up to the loft where you’ll find the rustic bedrooms and bathrooms for when you’re ready to turn in at night. When you think loft, you might conjure up images of a tight squeeze, but the addition of the skylights in almost every room here allows the light to make the space feel more open. 

With the host and his family living on the estate, you’ll sometimes find yourself around the table enjoying their homemade pasta alfresco with soft music playing in the background. There’s also a brick pizza oven here, so don’t be surprised if you eat more margarita than you’d care to – we know, that is not even remotely possible. 

When you’re not enjoying the home, you can make a trip to Pisa, Voltera, or Florence – each with their unique charm – or borrow the bicycles and simply explore the surroundings on two wheels instead of four. After a day of activity under the Tuscan sun, take a late-night swim in the heated pool, and when you’re ready to return inside, why not linger a little while longer to gaze up at the stars.

Days can be spent riding the horses from the stable, exploring the area by E-bike, or taking a cookery class at the restaurant, where you might learn how to make fresh pasta or cantuccini. On more relaxed afternoons, treat yourself to a spa or beauty treatment – there is nothing more serene than a massage in the garden, with a gentle breeze and a soundtrack of cicadas.

This charming apartment is located in perfect tranquillity inside a converted ancient palace, where the environment has been impeccably refurbished whilst respecting the original structure. We love how much greenery surrounds this home, and how it can make you appreciate the simple things in life as you take a long walk through the flora, breathing in the fresh air and listening to the bird's chirp. The wooden beams definitely give this home the character it deserves, as do the shutters that can be opened to let in light as you gaze out over the trees of an ancient noble villa.
 
When you want to be a part of the city's hustle and bustle, take the sixteen-minute drive to Lucca and bike along the city walls, losing yourself in the history of what would've been, before indulging in some retail therapy in the Old Town. The apartment has been converted from the old barn of the farm, lovingly transformed into a traditional Tuscan home. A fifteen-minute stroll will take you into the small country village of Vico d’Elsa, where you’ll find a fabulous pizzeria and a restaurant, as well as somewhere to stock up on groceries – ideal if you’re planning to cook on the barbecue. 

San Gimignano and its iconic towers are a twenty-two-minute drive. It’s a wonderful day trip – spend your time meandering around the narrow cobbled streets, stopping to enjoy coffee and gelato in a piazza, and soaking up the atmosphere of this historic town.

Practically the subject of an entire film genre, restoring a farmhouse in Tuscany’s countryside is the stuff of fantasies – only here, someone else has done the job for you and you get to kick back and enjoy the fruits of their labour. Set among rolling hills, a thirty-five-minute drive to the historic city of Lucca and twenty minutes to the alluring Viareggio coastline, this exceptional villa gazes out over the distant mountains. A sixteenth-century villa in the hilly outskirts of Florence that, at times, has been both a stables and a nightclub, Thermae is one of the most spectacular places we’ve seen in Italy. Its restoration has been a labour of love for the host, Giovanni, and the way that he’s incorporated technology into the original structure is simply impressive. There’s too much to describe here, but know that everything's been taken care of. And if we did have to choose one thing that stood out, it might have to be the pool, hidden away in the vaults, and only accessible through a trapdoor.

Located in the hills and a short drive from ancient villages, the Church of Pieve Santo Stefano and 4km from the historic city of Lucca lies this rustic villa. It’s charming, though a little dated in parts, and makes for a peaceful countryside stay. The outside space is definitely a highlight, with an outdoor lounge and an alfresco dining area – why not have your host arrange a private chef to top it off? Or, explore the surrounding area with a wine tasting.

The sprawling grounds of this Tuscan villa are home to woodland walks where you can spot birds, a big private pool for cooling dips and lots of different places to dine and unwind out in nature. Inside, the traditional decor won’t be for everyone – the kitchen feels a little dated, but it’s got everything you need for big group meals, and the ramshackle collection of sofas and armchairs is homely. There’s a ground-floor bedroom and bathroom adapted for accessibility, but the rest of the bedrooms are up a twisting stone staircase. Location-wise, it’s in the Chianti hills, surrounded by vineyards, and Florence is just a few kilometres away.

You might think that you have to pick between homes that respect tradition and those that embrace more contemporary design, but villas such as this one in the Florentine countryside show that you can have both if you choose wisely.

Step behind the front door and you'll spot some of the rustic features common in the region's homes, be that wooden ceiling beams, stone archways or the large fireplace in the lounge. However, the glisteningly modern kitchen packed full of appliances will be a treat for the culinarily gifted among guests, and the bathrooms are equally as easy on the eye.

Perhaps the most striking recent addition to the address lies beyond the four walls in the shared garden – it's remarkably easy to picture long afternoons spent gliding through the swimming pool before drying off on a lounger under the Tuscan sun. The picturesque outdoor space is completed with a ping pong table and a private terrace on which to enjoy alfresco feasts.

The location is certainly secluded, but there's a shop 400 metres from the front door and a restaurant another 200 metres beyond that. You're more than welcome to spend your time exploring the local Poggiosole region, but the city of Florence takes about half an hour in the car to reach and rewards those that make the journey with some of the most famous artworks in the world.
