The centre of Florence is only 13 kilometres away, making day trips a breeze. The decor is traditional, with antiques at every turn, so it may not suit everyone. But for a break to Italy that feels a little like stepping back in time, it’s a great choice.

Florence's most famous landmarks are mere steps from this apartment. Ponte Vecchio, Piazza Signoria, Florence Cathedral, and plenty more are less than ten minutes away on foot. Of course, being in the heart of the city has its quirks. Noise is likely here, and a climb to the third floor is required as the building doesn't have a lift. But once inside, we reckon you'll appreciate the traditional features on offer. The open-plan living area has just enough room to decompress after sightseeing as well as a compact (yet well-appointed) kitchen to rustle up Italian dishes. Two guests will sleep on a sofa bed, though – fine for short stays, but may not suit everyone.

Gaze out at the iconic domed cathedral from the comfort of this spectacular city-centre apartment. Set within an eye-catching period building, complete with imposing wooden double doors, along the rather lovely Via dei Servi, which connects the Piazza del Duomo and the Piazza della Santissima Annunziata. 

This narrow street is lined with a wide array of shops, charming cafes, and traditional restaurants, which should be your first port of call when you get the urge to head out and explore the city. For a closer look at the duomo, you need only walk a couple of minutes to the bustling piazza that surrounds it. Wandering a little over 100m in the opposite direction will lead to the fascinating Leonardo da Vinci Museum, which is filled with life-sized machines based on his many sketches. 

For more Renaissance creations, the iconic Uffizi Gallery lies around 700m to the south – well within walking distance. We'd recommend a leisurely riverside stroll along the River Arno afterwards, or if you're feeling active, head out on a stand-up paddleboarding expedition downriver.

Inside, the apartment is all clean lines and contemporary design, the exposed wood of the soaring ceilings and large wood-framed windows are the main clues to the building's extensive history. Unsurprisingly, we’re going to start by talking about the view. The floor-to-ceiling windows in the living space look directly out onto the River Arno and the famous Ponte Vecchio – an outstanding feat of engineering from Europe’s Middle Ages. You’re that close, you can hear the water rushing underneath the stone from your private balcony. The interiors are modest but comfortable and do well not to distract you from the fantastic vistas. Set up a traditional Italian breakfast at the dining table and watch daybreak over the water, then finish your coffee on the comfy couch as you put the finishing touches to your Florentine checklist. Take the short, ten-minute stroll across the bridge to the heart of the city where the Cathedral of Santa Maria del Fiore and Bargello National Museum are an afternoon well spent. Enjoy a pit stop in the bustling Piazza della Repubblica before continuing on to the Accademia Gallery, the proud home of Michelangelo’s David.

Delivering knockout vistas of Florence's rooftops and the mighty Duomo from nearly every room, we've fallen hard for this central bolthole. Each light-filled bedroom is as elegant as the next, though they are short on floor and storage space, so we recommend packing lightly. It's also worth noting at full occupancy, it could be a squeeze to all kick back on the sofa, and while the kitchen is well-equipped, it's short on prepping space. It's the perfect excuse to eat out instead, and luckily, you're an olive stone's throw from countless traditional trattorias for all the Tuscan classics.
