Greeting you with wrought-iron gates, this eighteenth-century Tuscan villa immerses you in the past while maintaining one foot firmly in the present. Set in rolling countryside, just a short drive from the city of Pistoia, it's about as charming as it gets. Think staggering scenery, beautiful terraces, stone courtyards and terracotta tiles. The estate is private and pristine, with immaculate lawns, fragrant flowers and a backdrop of gently swaying pine trees. It's out here that we think you'll spend most of your time, by the glorious infinity pool with far-reaching views. Up at the house, you'll step into history, with so many character features it could be used as a setting for a film. There's a grand living space, with a magnificent fireplace and huge dining table, along with a rustic kitchen and a second lounge. But it's the bedrooms that we fell head over heels with – furnished with antiques and with beamed ceilings and shuttered windows, they're simply beautiful. The ground floor bedroom even opens to a covered veranda with a table and chairs, and the master bedroom's ensuite has a Turkish bath where you can enjoy some aromatherapy. Dining outside on the terrace is an all-day affair, with a barbecue for some of the fresh produce you can pick up locally. And in the evening, why not slip into the hot tub as the sun sets. And although it feels secluded, this place is just a forty-minute drive from Lucca and an hour from Florence.

An open space in a sixteenth-century building, in the hilly outskirts of Florence that, at time at times, has been both a stables and a nightclub, Thermae is one of the most spectacular places we’ve seen in Italy. Its restoration has been a labour of love for the host, Giovanni, and the way that he’s incorporated technology into the original structure is simply impressive. There’s too much to describe here, but know that everything's been taken care of. And if we did have to choose one thing that stood out, it might have to be the pool, hidden away in the vaults, and only accessible through a trapdoor.

The villas are perfect for large groups, though at full occupancy, two guests will sleep on a sofa bed and one will sleep on a single bed in a walk-through room.

An hour's drive from Florence, this traditional villa is an excellent base for discovering Tuscany. The garden and surrounding 45-acre grounds are the biggest draw – there's a private pool, scenic terrace, and sweeping panoramas of the surrounding countryside. An evening spent watching the sun go down over a glass of wine is the perfect way to unwind, and you can do just that here. The decor inside is traditionally Tuscan, but two kitchens and multiple lounges offer plenty of space for groups. Just note that one of the bedrooms is on a mezzanine, so the ceilings are low, and the space is quite tight.

Nestled in the Tuscan countryside of Casalguidi in Pistoia, this charming home offers a tranquil escape surrounded by nature. The country house is traditional and rustic, with a large fenced garden that boasts a brick barbecue for alfresco dining. There are hammocks to doze in while the kids play foosball, table tennis, and basketball. Perfect for outdoorsy travellers, this home is in a great spot for hiking and cycling trips. At full occupancy, three guests will sleep on sofa beds in the living spaces – for more privacy, we’d stick to a guest count of eleven.

The living room has a particularly cosy feel, with a fireplace for winter escapes and striking red walls. A similar room on the top floor serves as a second lounge and has a sofa bed for two guests – ideal for children.

Spend your days by the private pool, which boasts incredible views, or drive less than ten minutes into the town and its famous spas. And for a day out, it's easy to drive to any of the area's main attractions – Florence, Pistoia, Lucca and Pisa.

It might have every luxury you could ask for, with a modern interior that practically sparkles, but the home is traditional and charming. Creamy walls, white shuttered windows, and a terracotta tiled roof, characteristic of a Tuscan abode, set the scene for a blissful stay. 

While the home itself is lovely, we can’t get over the panoramic views of the Tuscan countryside. Atmospheric rolling hills and sprawling fields are everywhere you turn. Set on an estate dotted with trees, shrubs, and other native foliage, this home ecompasses the entire first floor of an ancient villa in Orentano. Despite sharing things like the pool, tennis court, and soccer field with another home, there is enough room on the property for it to still feel private. That’s probably helped along by the fact that you have your own private garden and barbecue – not to mention the sheer size of the home itself. Move easily between rooms and use the easy go-between as an excuse to nip into the kitchen for another cup of coffee and a dozen more biscotti to take back to where you’re reading on the plush sofa. Take the spiral staircase up to the loft where you’ll find the rustic bedrooms and bathrooms for when you’re ready to turn in at night. When you think loft, you might conjure up images of a tight squeeze, but the addition of the skylights in almost every room here allows the light to make the space feel more open. 

With the host and his family living on the estate, you’ll sometimes find yourself around the table enjoying their homemade pasta alfresco with soft music playing in the background. There’s also a brick pizza oven here, so don’t be surprised if you eat more margarita than you’d care to – we know, that is not even remotely possible. 

When you’re not enjoying the home, you can make a trip to Pisa, Voltera, or Florence – each with their unique charm – or borrow the bicycles and simply explore the surroundings on two wheels instead of four. After a day of activity under the Tuscan sun, take a late-night swim in the heated pool, and when you’re ready to return inside, why not linger a little while longer to gaze up at the stars.
