Perched on a cliffside on the edge of Monte Argentario, the sunset views from this home are sublime. From the dining table on the terrace, you can gaze out over the sea and there are plenty of seating nooks in the shade. The real highlight is the private staircase leading down the cliffside to a rocky swim platform set up with loungers and parasols. Just remember, it’s quite a climb back up to the villa. The living room is huge, so big groups will feel at home here, and a wall of windows shows off the sea view inside. Tiles in the bathrooms might be a little garish for some, but who cares when the outside space comes with that view.

Sun worshippers will love the selection of outdoor seating spots, while the whole family will get a kick out of a refreshing dip in the pool. Inside, the home is charmingly traditional and the separate annexe promises a spot of privacy for one couple. If you can tear yourself away, you’ll need a car to get around – but with the islands of Giglio, Montecristo, Elba and Corsica visible from the villa, you’ll soon be itching to get out and explore.

Porto Santo Stefano is a twenty-minute drive when you fancy a day out, or you can walk to Mar Morto Beach in less than ten minutes. Clearly, we're not alone in our thinking, as the tower was recently used for the filming of the James Bond film 'Quantum of Solace' — well, if it's good enough for Mr Bond, it's certainly enough to get us shaken and stirred.

We loved nothing more than ambling along the path toward the clear waters before finding a comfortable spot to sit with a packed lunch of Italian meats and cheeses – the perfect accompaniment to the idyllic setting.

Floor-to-ceiling black-framed windows and a sensitive renovation have turned this 16th-century Umbrian dovecote tower into one of the region's smartest stays. Behind the stone tower, the jagged cliffs and town of Orvieto loom, while in front, the rolling hills stretch before you. Interiors meld old with new. Flagstone floors and antique furniture sit alongside steel ceiling pipes and geometric prints. As one would expect in a tower, there are several spiralling staircases – as well as gawp-worthy views. Push open the sliding doors in the grey, country-style kitchen and step out onto the terrace. A built-in barbecue and wrought-iron table overlook the Italian countryside, while a large vegetable garden and fruit trees provide the freshest ingredients. Continue down to find 1.5 hectares of garden with Etruscan origin and the swimming pool, which was once an agricultural fountain. Forget about any form of work, now all you have to worry about is which spot to pick around the water, with the rush of the nearby brook providing background music.
