Perched on a cliffside on the edge of Monte Argentario, the sunset views from this home are sublime. From the dining table on the terrace, you can gaze out over the sea and there are plenty of seating nooks in the shade. The real highlight is the private staircase leading down the cliffside to a rocky swim platform set up with loungers and parasols. Just remember, it’s quite a climb back up to the villa. The living room is huge, so big groups will feel at home here, and a wall of windows shows off the sea view inside. Tiles in the bathrooms might be a little garish for some, but who cares when the outside space comes with that view.

Take a seat on the terrace and admire the vistas until your heart's content. Want to take a closer look? You'll have private access to the sea for afternoon dips. Just note that there are quite a lot of steps here, but we think the scenery is worth the climb.

If you love the artsy side of life, you'll thrive in this contemporary loft. Colourful art pieces stand out, with some splashes of colour added by the feature walls. Natural light pours in through the large kitchen windows – the perfect chance to watch the morning birds fly by. You even get a lovely view of the courtyard from the bedroom too. 

Spend the day at Constanti winery – this is where your host works, so she will be more than happy to give you a tour of the place. Beautiful vineyards surround the loft and a wide range of wineries to sample some of the tastiest glasses of red.

Return home to sit at the dining table while the scent of a home-cooked Italian meal fills the room from the nearby kitchen. After you've eaten, pick a book off of the shelf, and snuggle up on the sofa while the moonlight shines through the windows. Pop the TV on for background noise or simply enjoy the peace and quiet that Montalcino brings.

With contemporary interiors, it’s made up of the main villa, sleeping eight, and a separate annexe that gives one guest some extra privacy. But for us, the star of the show is the outdoor space. Including the family vineyard, there’s an impressive amount of room to spread out here and soak up the Tuscan sun. With views of the hills surrounding you, it’s just the spot to relax, and the private pool and sun-drenched terraces are just the place to do so. 

Maremma Dreams

It's homes like this that give Tuscany its reputation as a blissful place which to retreat for a week or three. The surrounding landscape of vineyards and rolling hillsides is as picturesque as you could possibly imagine, while the home itself is bursting with character.

Much of this is down to its long history. Built at the end of the 18th century as a mill, it was converted into a farmhouse before becoming the handsome getaway you see today. This heritage is writ large across the interior, with stone archways, wooden ceiling beams and terracotta tiles underfoot a treat for those that melt at the sight of rustic design – which includes us. The more contemporary features – including the freestanding bathtub and modern kitchen – have been tastefully added to retain this inimitable charm.

Outside, it's a slightly different story. The hot tub and swimming pool in the middle of the garden are comparatively recent additions to the address but are no less welcome for it. As well as that, there are a couple of spots for alfresco feasts to dine among the fragrant flowers and trees that fill the grounds.

Although the location is certainly secluded, you don't have to venture far to find things to see and do. The medieval hilltop town of Montepulciano is only 4.5km away and is famous for its Renaissance-era buildings and globally-coveted wine. A little further afield, the cities of Perugia and Siena are 63 and 67km away respectively, so well within range for a day trip.

Rustic Idyll

Built in local stone, this renovated home is packed with character features, such as chestnut wood beams and handcrafted terracotta floors, which blend with modern luxuries. There are two living rooms here and there’s an exercise room which is on the lower floor. Outside, there's a dining area, a pergola with an alfresco lounge and an infinity pool with panoramic views of the Tuscan hills. Location-wise, this home is a short drive from the thermal springs of Terme di Saturnia. The beaches of the Tyrrhenian coast, such as Giannella Beach, are also reachable in around half an hour by car.

Not far from Porto Ercole, this home makes the most of its coastal scenery. You'll be just 900 metres from the beach, and the views are downright blissful – they stretch across the sea to the island of Formiche di Burano. Everyone will appreciate the swimming pool, and the terrace makes the perfect spot for a nightcap as the sun goes down. Each bedroom has its own entrance, and the one on the lower ground floor is ideal for those who don't mind steps. When you're ready to explore, you'll find the small village of Ansedonia nearby, as well as Orbetello, which is a ten-minute drive away.

Pink Terracotta

This glorious villa is ready to welcome you on an idyllic Italian lakeside break. Based just a short drive from the blue waters of Bolsena Lake, this 20th-century Italian farmhouse has been respectfully renovated to keep the original features that give this home its unique character – with exposed beams of chestnut wood, dramatic round vaults and beautiful terracotta floors. We love the contemporary, minimalist style that they’ve blended in with the retro feel, making the home feel absolutely charming.

We absolutely love the dining area, where you can feast on Italian suppers of soup and risotto all together. There are two large living areas, giving you plenty of room to stretch out and relax – one featuring a lovely fireplace where you can cosy up in colder months. There’s even a ping pong table where you can challenge your loved ones to a table tennis game or two. Outside, you’ll find huge, lush expanses of green parkland, as well as a private pool where you can take a refreshing dip.

That Old Chestnut

Surrounded by olive groves and rolling Umbrian countryside, this rustic farmhouse retains its original character and charm. We loved the timber and exposed brickwork ceilings, Venetian plaster walls and traditional furnishings that make the place feel like home. Wake up to a light breakfast in the charming kitchen then spend your day lounging by the secluded pool or floating about in its cool water. 

Enjoy a quiet moment with a good book on the wisteria-covered pergola, surrounded by the scent of potted lavender, before heading out to explore. Stroll around the village of Panicale, right on your doorstep, or drive over to Perugia for a tour of the excavations under San Lorenzo cathedral, followed by a mosey around Porta Sole, the city’s creative quarter. When dusk falls, pick out a family-run restaurant for a selection of hearty local dishes. 

Wisteria & Lavender

This Suvereto apartment may be small, but what it lacks in size, it makes up for in charm. Walls of exposed stone, sumptuous antique beds and ceilings adorned with wooden beams paint the picture of a traditional Tuscan holiday. Yet, in spite of the compact size, the kitchen and bathroom are sleek, stylish and modern, just the ticket for two. The window seat is our favourite spot – in the mornings, there's nothing better than enjoying an espresso as the smell of fresh-baked bread rises from the bakery below.

One of Tuscany's hidden gems, Suvereto is rife with old-world character – picture medieval walls, cobblestone streets and sidewalk cafes overlooking ancient churches. We love the laid-back pace of life here, but with vineyards, hiking trails and beaches like Spiaggia di Rimigliano all a short drive away, you'll be well-placed for exploring, too.

An excellent choice for a large group of friends or family, there's plenty of space to spill out and feel at home here. Cool off from the Tuscan sun in the infinity pool. Put to use the vast, chef-worthy kitchen (we're talking two dishwashers, two ovens, and some) for a big dinner party – a private chef is bookable for fine dining. Or keep things easy and fire up the barbecue or pizza oven outside as breath-taking views of the valley spread out before you –  best seen beneath the pergola at sunset with a glass of something chilled. And on chiller nights, hunker down beside the fireplace with a good book – there are two living rooms to choose from. When it's time to lay your head, hop in the home's elevator and take your pick from the many bedrooms, boasting king-sized beds and separate bathrooms. We'll let you decide who lucks out on that ground floor suite with bi-folds opening onto the lawned gardens. Should you ever wish to leave this idyll, you'll find you're in an excellent base to uncover Tuscany's vineyards and historic villages, starting in Sarteano, just a ten-minute drive away. With its tempting trattorias and beguiling historic charms, you'll be off to a flying start.

Nestled in the Tuscan countryside, this villa is a place for a family or group of friends to spend quality time together in the sunshine. From the hanging chair to sun loungers, the outside space offers ample opportunities to enjoy the views. Plus, there’s a covered terrace for alfresco dining. The sleeping quarters are on the lower ground floor with direct access to the garden and pool (something to keep in mind if you’re staying with young children), and the main bedroom has an open-concept en-suite, which may not be to everyone’s taste. If you fancy a change of scenery, the town of Castel del Piano is a short drive away.

Set on the first floor of a farmhouse and accessed by an external staircase, inside, you’ll find plenty of characterful features. We love the vistas of the surrounding hills and valleys, and another highlight is the garden with its private pool. There’s a reed-covered pergola that provides a shaded spot for alfresco dining and a balcony, too. Located within the family farm, which extends over 100 hectares with arable land, olive groves and woodland, there are plenty of hiking opportunities. You’ll also find the picturesque Aquilonaccio Waterfall here or visit the nearby town of Acquapendente, 7 kilometres away.

The view from this 13th-century tower-turned-villa could be the envy of every Italian landscape painter. The hills of the Monte Rufeno national park, kissed golden at sunset and sunrise, sprawl before you and there’s probably no better place to take it all in than from the edge of the infinity pool. If the Italian sun gets too much, retreat to the lounge and dining area beneath the vine-dappled pergola – there’s a traditional stone-built pizza oven and grill out here for the chef of the group to try some regional classics alfresco. 

You can still dine with a view indoors, thanks to the sunroom with its walls of glass – the ideal spot for breakfast. While the rest of the tower and annexe is all wood-beam ceilings and terracotta floors, the kitchen feels sleek and modern with a dedicated wine fridge to chill your orvietos and pinot grigios. Apart from aspiring chefs, there’s plenty to entertain all kinds of visitors here – hit the gym and unwind with a sauna session after, head to the media room for a movie night or tuck yourself away with a book from the big collection of holiday reads. Winding your way up the staircases of the old tower, the view gets better and better. You’ll find bedrooms on the upper levels, with fabulous antique beds and ensuites – some with slipper tubs for a long soak.

Out here on the Tuscan- Lazio-Umbrian border, hiking trails snake through the Monte Rufeno national park and vineyards tumble town the hillsides (in fact, there’s a winery on the estate). Should you wish to stock up on supplies or explore the medieval streets of the nearest picturesque Tuscan town, Orvieto is a short drive away.

If exploring sounds like a good idea, take the short drive to charming Chiusi for a stroll around the honey-hued streets and an espresso in a traditional cafe. Should a day trip be on the cards, travel north to Arezzo – visit the hilltop cathedral, Basilica di San Domenico and the imposing Medicean Fortress. Inside, you can look forward to vaulted ceilings and well-thought-out interior design. With a maximum occupancy of eight, two guests will sleep on a sofa bed in the ground-floor living room. The villa is in Maremma in southern Tuscany, close to beaches and vineyards.
