Not only is it surrounded by beautiful countryside (check) and within easy reach of a whole host of wineries (double check), but it has plenty of outdoor space, with no shortage of loungers for kicking back and soaking up the glorious Tuscan sunshine. 

We could easily spend all day unwinding here – the traditional design features alone are enough to make us want to stay put – but we wouldn’t blame you if you wanted to get out and see what the rest of the region has to offer. Go for a stroll through the neighbouring vineyards or jump in the car and head into Gambassi Terme – an ancient town named after the area’s natural hot springs – to get a taste of local life. Or, if you’re starting to miss the sights and sounds of the city, take a day trip to Florence and indulge in a spot of sightseeing. Just don’t forget to snap a selfie with Michelangelo’s David.

The stunning views are best enjoyed from the many balconies and terraces, or from the beautiful infinity pool with its built-in hot tub, while other fabulous perks outside include the vegetable garden, chicken coop and children's treehouse, along with outdoor table tennis, a five-a-side football pitch and private fishing lake. 

Inside, it's a traditional and elegant home, with classical furnishings and tasteful decor. We love the period features like the terracotta floors, beamed ceilings, archways and fireplace, while the pretty country kitchen is enough to make any keen cook smile. The bedrooms are all romantic and comfortable, dressed with antique furniture and each boasting its own bathroom. Plus, there's an extensive wine cellar and, if you're a fitness fan, there's even a fully equipped gym in the nearby building.

If you don't feel like cooking, there's an on-site chef who can be hired to take care of it for you or you can arrange for some Tuscan cooking classes – paired with excellent local wine. Just a few minutes' drive from the hamlet of Iano, the location is perfect for reaching the art cities of Florence, Pisa, Siena and Lucca or medieval towns like Volterra and San Gimignano, while keen hikers and mountain bikers will love the surrounding hills. And for a day at the beach, the coast and places like Livorno are less than an hour away by car.

This villa is a bit of a mix, a meeting of Ibiza cool and traditional Tuscany. While only built in 2015, the home has borrowed from bygone eras with thick beamed ceilings, olive-green French doors, and a carved wooden fireplace. Pops of modernity come from stylish interior choices. We've not seen such an eclectic mix as the main bedroom with its wall-size photo of a forest, sandbags, and a monochrome print of a model. But, much like in the rest of the villa, it works. 

The living-dining room is pretty snug, with one sofa, but step outside, and there's plenty of room to play. Lazy days can be spent in the Italian sunshine, lounging by the pool or reading a book on one of the stone chairs in the garden. If things get a little warm, there are several shaded patios –one with a grey wicker sofa set and the second with a dining table. We suggest firing up the barbecue, pouring yourself a glass of something cold, and sitting back and relaxing.

Found a five-minute drive from Gambassi Terme, the villa feels like it's in the deepest countryside, with nothing but lush countryside and forest surrounding you, transporting you back to the graceful embrace of nature. Wooden beams, an open-hearth fireplace, and stone arches give the plot a sense of history, which is added to by antique furniture and rugs. 

Days start by pushing open the French doors in bedrooms and looking out over the Tuscan hills, before breakfast on the wrought-iron table on the patio. The pool is perfect for cooling off from the heat, with sun loungers for relaxing. As night starts to fall, the long wooden table under the straw pergola is the only place to be – watching the pink and orange sky turn dark.
