Combining stone walls and wooden beams with modern furnishings and stylish decor, this one offers a unique stay experience with plenty of luxury touches to boot. 

We particularly love the contemporary modular sofa, artistic lighting and Asian wall art that blends with the handmade wood and antique fireplace to create a well-balanced, zen space to relax after an explorative day driving up and down the winding hillside roads. Cook up a storm in the sleek kitchen, before tucking into a big group meal in the dining room with funky decorative details – like the wooden bookshelves and Asian-influenced objects. 

But while we adore the interiors, our favourite spot has to be down by the glistening pool. Whether you're enjoying an alfresco lunch on the covered terrace, cooling off with a quick dip in the pool, or enjoying an aperitif under the canopy, you'll be able to admire the incredible green vistas.

Don’t be thrown by the neon pool umbrellas – everything else about this villa is pure class. Set in two square kilometres of gardens, with manicured lawns, fragrant herbs and towering cypress trees, it’s an imposing Tuscan country home, with two wings and a separate annexe. Found in Casino di Terra in Pisa province, its style could be described as “typically Tuscan”, with its whitewashed walls and terracotta tiles, bare stonework and exposed beams, making for a relaxing, traditional vibe. The two wing set-up makes it great for two families to share, especially as there’s a good mixture of double and single beds (including three rooms where you can choose to zip them together or separate them to suit). Open up the curtains and take in the view of the rolling hills and over the vineyards. The villa can be found just outside of the village of Fabbrica, which you can walk to for a coffee in four minutes. From the garden, the view stretches all the way to Volterra – it’s thirty-four minutes away by car and is ideal for day trips. 

Outside, the large paved garden is perfect for dining alfresco, be it for breakfast or for catered dinners. If you’re anything like us, you’ll want to spend much of your day swimming in the salt-water pool or lazing in the sunshine. Originally a small, rural stone building, this villa has been extended and modernised, allowing it to blend into the landscape. And what a setting it is, the views of the Tuscan countryside are beautiful – enjoy them from the swimming pool (heated for a fee) and the hot tub. Inside, there's plenty of room to entertain your family or friends, and if you must work while on holiday, well there are a couple of workstations in two bedrooms. We'd also recommend a car to get the most out of the area. You'll find Volterra 14 kilometres and San Gimignano 18 kilometres away.

Out here in the Tuscan countryside, you can live the rustic idyll where days are spent reading a book in the shade of an olive tree or dining as a group outside in the shade of a pergola. The verdant green garden is enclosed by an old stone wall and within the grounds, you’ll find a shaded olive grove and an orchard furnished with hanging chairs and bistro tables to seclude yourself away. We love the barbecue area where an old well has been turned into an innovative grill, there’s a cast-iron bread oven and plenty of prep space for the chef of the group to tinker away. 

The highlight inside has to be the farmhouse-style kitchen with its electric oven that looks like the bread ovens of old and marble-topped counters against exposed stone walls. The barrel-vaulted dining room harks back to days gone by and throughout you’ll find wooden ceilings and terracotta floors. The living room is a surprisingly sleek and modern space, but the bedrooms – with wrought-iron frames against crisp white walls – are back to Tuscan rusticana. 

You’re out in the rolling hills of southern Tuscany here, but it’s a short hop in the car to Pomarance where you’ll find supermarkets for supplies, and a healthy handful of pizzerias, local bars and coffee shops.

 If you're looking to experience a real taste of rural Italy, this villa located just outside of the small town of Bibbona is a Mediterranean dream come true. Set amidst six hectares of green parkland (one of which presents the villa's private garden), prepare to immerse yourself into an abundance of peace and serenity. 

A modern build, the home was finished back in 2002 and thanks to its high-quality finishings and construction techniques, it doesn't appear to have aged a day. Either that or like a new pair of Levi jeans – it's only getting better with age. Its interior welcomes modern lines and neutral colours in keeping with the tranquil setting outside in the garden.

Positioned just 3 kilometres away from the villages of Casale Marittimo and Bibbona – make the most of the local conveniences, which are within easy reach by car. For the beach, head to Bau Beach – only a thirteen-minute drive away. Meanwhile, you'll find the more happening city of Livorno reachable in just forty-five minutes by car.

Set amid beautiful green countryside just outside the pretty medieval town of Volterra, this striking stone home – which was originally constructed to serve as a watchtower – is brimming with quintessential Tuscan charm and a host of handy amenities, making it the perfect base from which to set out and explore the highlights of the local area.

Spend days unwinding within the tranquil environs of the home and its sprawling gardens filled with mature trees and boasting a lovely fenced swimming pool area. When it comes to exploring, find beaches like Marina di Bibbona around thirty minutes away, and the home also makes a good base for day trips to Cecina, Volterra and beyond.

There are few places on earth as peaceful as Tuscany – see for yourself when you stay at this rural retreat on the outskirts of Montelopio. While the villa benefits from being close to this medieval village's amenities, it's far enough away that you can enjoy the enchanting countryside without interruption.

The highlight for us has to be the vast garden, where you can lounge by the pool (or in it) and listen to birds chirp as a gentle breeze dances through the trees. In the evenings, kick back in the shaded lounge area after grilling locally-grown veg on the outdoor stove. While somewhat traditionally decorated, this home has a modern heart. You can feel at ease knowing your needs have been taken care of, from the well-outfitted kitchen to the bright bedrooms equipped with that all-important air conditioning. 

If you can bear to leave this secluded spot, venture to nearby Volterra. This walled mountaintop town is a honeypot for history buffs, exhibiting architectural relics from Etruscan, Roman and Medieval periods. Even if this doesn't interest you, the site is well worth a visit for its expansive views across the surrounding hills.

Set in the hills of Pisa, this villa offers a relaxing retreat from the fast pace of modern life. With a main villa and multiple apartments with separate kitchens and living areas, there are plenty of private spaces if you’re visiting as a large group. For socialising altogether, you’ll find multiple spots around the gardens, with shaded terraces, alfresco dining spaces, a children’s playground, an outdoor exercise area and a private pool. This 18th-century farmhouse is on the traditional side, so expect some older features, though we think that’s part of the charm of this home. Conveniently located between Valdera, Volterra, San Gimignano, and Pisa, you’ll be able to make the most of the Tuscan countryside and vineyards here.
