We love the large windows here that give way to views of the shared grounds – a lush green garden dotted with centuries-old trees and a glistening communal pool framed by sun loungers. Spend your days taking cool dips in its waters, soaking up the sun on the deck chairs and enjoying the table tennis, foosball and football field on offer. You’ve also got a private alfresco dining area adjacent to your apartment, the ideal spot to gather for sunny breakfasts or a celebratory barbecue feast under the stars. 
 
At the end of a fun day, retreat to your beautifully curated bedrooms for a dreamy night’s sleep, and wake to the prospect of another day of fun, filled with bicycle rides around the stunning countryside and cooking classes organised by your wonderfully friendly hosts who live on-site in a neighbouring apartment. 
 
While you could easily spend your entire stay luxuriating in your home's breathtaking setting, take some time to visit the nearby cultural sights of Pisa (just over forty minutes away by car) and Lucca (just under a thirty-minute drive).

Set on an estate dotted with trees, shrubs, and other native foliage, this home ecompasses the entire first floor of an ancient villa in Orentano. Despite sharing things like the pool, tennis court, and soccer field with another home, there is enough room on the property for it to still feel private. That’s probably helped along by the fact that you have your own private garden and barbecue – not to mention the sheer size of the home itself. Move easily between rooms and use the easy go-between as an excuse to nip into the kitchen for another cup of coffee and a dozen more biscotti to take back to where you’re reading on the plush sofa. Take the spiral staircase up to the loft where you’ll find the rustic bedrooms and bathrooms for when you’re ready to turn in at night. When you think loft, you might conjure up images of a tight squeeze, but the addition of the skylights in almost every room here allows the light to make the space feel more open. 

With the host and his family living on the estate, you’ll sometimes find yourself around the table enjoying their homemade pasta alfresco with soft music playing in the background. There’s also a brick pizza oven here, so don’t be surprised if you eat more margarita than you’d care to – we know, that is not even remotely possible. 

When you’re not enjoying the home, you can make a trip to Pisa, Voltera, or Florence – each with their unique charm – or borrow the bicycles and simply explore the surroundings on two wheels instead of four. After a day of activity under the Tuscan sun, take a late-night swim in the heated pool, and when you’re ready to return inside, why not linger a little while longer to gaze up at the stars.

Pad out with your morning expresso to soak up the early Tuscan rays from the loungers. Or up the ante with a jog around the acres of countryside that surround this magnificent abode – with a pit stop at the village bakery (seven minutes on foot) to pick up breakfast pastries. Then while away the rest of the day beneath the shady pergola, splash about in the swimming pool or rejuvenate in the cavernous indoor jacuzzi spa overlooking the garden. When thoughts turn to food, fire up the wood-burning pizza oven or barbecue for alfresco dining on the veranda - or take an early evening stroll into the village (seven minutes on foot) for authentic restaurants and a taste of Tuscan life.

Blending traditional cottage charm with big, bold design features, this Italian villa is the stuff of our design dreams. Set in the heart of the Tuscan countryside, the former farmhouse has been brought into the 21st century, with double-height windows, a white panelled gourmet kitchen and contemporary light fixtures. There's still plenty of old-school charm; we love the mix of exposed brick, wooden beams and old fireplaces in the living area. Bedrooms each have their own theme, from the jet black double to the pastel-striped master suite – though given this home's quiet location, you're going to get a good night's sleep wherever you lay your head. Our favourite part? The home's patio with its dining set and wicker sofas, with enough room for the whole group to gather round and watch the sunset. 

Star-Sprinkled Skies

This sweet stone farmhouse just a 10-minute drive from Lucca is a glorious spot for two couples or a small family to live the Tuscan dream. Through the antique gate in a low stone wall, this hillside home has a private swimming pool surrounded by lovely mature gardens. Rich, green trees shield the expansive garden from view and there’s plenty of space for outdoor lounging. Cook alfresco at the brick summer kitchen and dine by lantern light as crickets sing in the greenery around you. Inside, sandwiched between ancient wooden beams and terracotta floors, are farmhouse-chic interiors in soothing pastel tones. But a quirky suspended staircase and macrame chandelier in the lounge add a little surprise. Bedrooms in pastel pink and dove grey feel fairytale fine beneath the old wooden ceiling of the home. Just a short walk away you’ll find a little market store and a local bar, and a bit further into the village is a pizzeria and bar to enjoy.

Whilst being secluded, it's close enough to nearby towns for comfort and convenience. Bientina is just a five-minute drive away, an active town comprised of an olympic swimming pool, tennis courts and many fine restaurants. If you're really up for an adventure, Pisa and Florence are less than an hour away.

We recommend hiring a car here as there's plenty to do and see within a short drive. The historic town of Lucca with its colourful buildings and ancient monuments is only twenty-six-minutes away, and the lovable Pisa with its must-see leaning tower is a thirty-eight-minute drive. No matter where you choose to go, you'll find vibrant Italian culture to soak up (and so much good food). The home itself is located in the village of Sant’Andrea di Compito – a place known for its stunning Camellia trees dating back to the 1800s. We recommend wandering its streets and taking in the medieval charm.

This farmhouse villa is an ideal base for exploring some gorgeous Tuscan cities and towns. Made up of a main house and a hayloft with its own living room and kitchen, there's plenty of space for a family or group of friends to stretch out. We think a couple of areas could do with a touch-up, especially in the hayloft, but the views over the Compitese hills from the private pool are lovely. You'll want a car for exploring, and there's no shortage of hot spots like Lucca, Pisa, and Florence nearby.

Opulence is the name of the game here, and we were immediately seduced by this home’s charm. Firstly, its setting is truly idyllic, with stunning vistas of rolling green hills, punctuated by dark and majestic cypress trees. Evenings are particularly enchanting, and you’ll no doubt find yourself organising elegant suppers and aperitivos, with the glow of the setting sun as your backdrop. The covered, outdoor dining area invites those communal feasts, with the laid-back, dolce-far-niente vibe. In the heat of the afternoon sun, you can cool yourself in the lovely swimming pool, and work on your tan on one of the sun loungers dotted around. 

The inside of the villa is a stunning mélange of classic Italian style with modern comfort. We love the incredible attention to detail with which the interior has been decorated, and you’ll find yourself wandering around these rooms, admiring the art and the unique pieces scattered about. There is more than enough space to lounge about, with comfy sofas and chairs, and you can also enjoy sumptuous indoor feasts in the large dining room. 

The luxurious feeling continues into the bedrooms, which are plush, spacious, and stylishly decorated, with comfy beds carrying the promise of restful sleep.

This beautiful home sits amid the rolling hills outside of Orentano, a Tuscan village. Thousands of hectares of woods and countryside surround the home, which is part of an estate owned by a celebrated wine-maker. Lucca is less than thirty minutes away, while Florence and San Gimignano can be reached in an hour – here, you get convenience as well as elegance. Closer to home, you can stroll into Orentano for pizza, or drive ten minutes to Altopascio to try the famed Altopascio bread. 

The veranda that wraps around the home is where we’d start each day, sipping coffee and taking in the view. Later on, you might swim a few lengths in the private pool, before lounging beneath wooden beams in the grand yet inviting living room. Meals can be enjoyed in the shade of the veranda, accompanied by lots of local wine. You’ll never want to leave this idyll.

Surrounded by olive groves and vineyards, this villa offers rest and relaxation for a family or group of friends in the Tuscan countryside. You’ll spend most of your time outside here, thanks to the private swimming pool, dining terrace and four-poster sunbed. But when you do head inside, we recommend making a beeline for the Jacuzzi. Location-wise, restaurants are a short drive away if you don’t fancy cooking. The village of Montecarlo is around a five-minute drive away, and Lucca is reached in around fifteen minutes by car.

Stylish and sophisticated, this apartment is a comfortable base for friends and families. It's got all the essentials you'll need – a well-appointed kitchen, two cosy bedrooms, and two convenient bathrooms. Speaking of convenience, the location is a big plus. Right in the heart of Montecarlo, you'll be treated to sweeping views of rolling hills and the area's vineyards. The charming main street is right on your doorstep – as is a prestigious Michelin-starred restaurant. Lucca is slightly further afield, yet still within easy driving distance – perfect for a day trip.

While the region feels incredibly peaceful, it’s only a twenty-two-minute drive from the bustling medieval town of Lucca, and just over thirty from the city of Pisa. But this home feels a world away from any sort of metropolis.

A former farmhouse set in lush grounds, the owners recently renovated the building while retaining its old-world charm. With the scents of olive groves at ground level, and incredibly clear starry skies above, your rural retreat offers everything you’d expect from country living, but with a modern, luxury edge. The huge, panoramic private pool has views of the local village, and Lucca further afield, while your wooden patio is equipped with a barbecue and dining set for alfresco meals.

After sundown, head inside to admire the interiors, merging original elements with 21st-century updates. Exposed stone walls, flagstone floors, and wooden beamed ceilings ooze Tuscan tradition. But its fresh, white colour palette, chandeliers, and Scandi-style open wardrobes are elegant reminders of the modern age.

If you’re a wine connoisseur, then this elegant Tuscan home, set on a winery, could be for you. There are beautiful views over the private vineyards and countryside from the infinity swimming pool. Inside, we love the conservatory – the perfect place to dine under the stars. The main bedroom suite is another highlight of this home, as you can see. You may not want to leave this luxurious farmhouse, but if you do there are many charming towns nearby to explore – we’d recommend hiring a car to get the most out of your stay.

Found in an ancient hamlet in Lucca, this Italian cottage charms with stone walls and exposed beams.  Because of its age, the interior is that of a more traditional home, which might not be to everyone's taste. Still, it's comfortable and family-friendly.  It's worth noting the sloped ceilings could be hazardous to taller guests, and there's no air conditioning in the third bedroom. With ample outdoor seating, you can take in the greenery on the horizon with a glass of wine. The swimming pool above ground also gives you a unique view of the village. For day trips, venture to Pisa or Lucca – both reachable by car.

Perfect for couples or solo travellers, this home is ideal if you’re looking to live like a local in one of Italy's most enchanting cities.

This traditional stone farmhouse offers a tranquil retreat surrounded by leafy hills, yet sits within easy reach of plenty of cultural sightseeing opportunities with Lucca's centre just 14 kilometres away.

Inside, you’ll find Cotto-tiled floors and Italian heirloom furnishings, with ample space to recline and unwind when you're not outside enjoying the beautiful grounds. With the warm Mediterranean climate, take advantage of the garden with its plump outdoor sofas and sun-dappled patio, perfect for alfresco aperitivos on long balmy evenings.

Despite its quiet location, the area offers rolling vineyards, a botanical garden and nearby lakes, such as Lago Gherardesca, only a short drive away. And if you’re looking to explore a little further afield, hop in the car to explore Pisa (twenty-five minutes), Florence (an hour), the Cinque Terre (an hour) and Volterra (forty-five minutes)

Set on the rolling hills of Montecarlo and surrounded by vineyards and olive groves, you'll find yourself in awe of the countryside views when you stay at this traditional villa. From the moment you arrive and enter the gated driveway, you'll realise this is somewhere special. Completely fenced and bordered with hedges, fragrant flowers and antique terracotta pots, the 5,000sqm garden here feels more like a park. Kids will enjoy the outdoor ping pong table, while the adults enjoy sipping sundowners and sharing nibbles in the alfresco dining space, surrounded by the scents of the surrounding vineyards. And let's not forget the Roman-style pool, lined in beautiful blue mosaic tiles with hydromassage jets that invite you to lean back and relax. Inside, this home is just as impressive, with beautiful artwork and elegant antique furniture everywhere you look. We particularly love the green marble spiral staircase, which adds an air of opulence to the space. We're sure you'll be more than content here, but if you want to venture out, the ancient Montecarlo Fortress is close by.

Just a short drive from Lucca, this traditional farmhouse opens its doors to the simple pleasures of Italian living. Consisting of a main house and an adjoining hayloft (with its own kitchen) which also has A/C, this is a great option for groups in search of peace, privacy and a beautiful setting. The private pool is ideal for afternoon dips, and there's a large garden and plenty to explore in the surroundings. Outside you can follow hiking trails straight from the door, while cities like Pisa and Florence are also within driving distance. 



Beauty of Tuscany 

You'll find plenty of places to take advantage of the Tuscan sun at this romantic villa, set only a few minutes from historic Lucca. Of course, the private swimming pool is the biggest draw – make a splash in the crystal-clear water first-thing each morning, then paddle over to the Jacuzzi corner and relax in the bubbles with a cocktail in hand. Later on, lounge on either of the two balconies with a glass of local wine, then dig into an Italian feast on the patio as the stars come out.

The design inside is as charming as can be – we're swooning over the subtle geometric wallpaper, wood-beamed ceilings and those classic terracotta floors. Split between two different villas, you'll have more than enough space to spread out – and contemporary comforts like rainfall showers and sleek kitchens will ensure every 21st-century whim is met. 

Location-wise, you're just ten minutes by car from Lucca – the Renaissance-era streets are perfect for a wander. A bit further away are Volterra, Montecarlo and Siena, making this an ideal spot to explore Tuscany's rolling countryside and postcard-worthy scenery.

Inside, the bright and characterful living area is perfect for lazy mornings and cosy nights at home, with more than enough space to spread out and get comfortable. Downstairs in the basement suite, there's even more room. A small kitchen, living area and an en-suite bedroom make it a perfect option for those craving a little extra peace and quiet. But there's no denying that the piece de resistance here is the tranquil garden. The view alone is mesmerising – just imagine the outlook you'll have as the sun sets over the valley – and the open green space and sparkling pool only add to the magic. While away the afternoons in the water before firing up the traditional pizza oven for an alfresco dinner, sharing a bottle of Tuscany's world-renowned wine around the outdoor table as the evening draws to a close.

If you can pull yourself away from the idyllic garden, the weekly market in Ruota is the perfect spot to shop for fresh fruit and local produce. Lucca is only a thirty-minute drive away if you fancy a day of sightseeing, and all the other famous Tuscan cities are within easy reach by car, including Pisa (forty minutes), Pietrasanta (about an hour) and Florence (an hour and fifteen minutes).

Gently We Go

This fairy tale cottage offers front row seats to a freshwater stream that runs directly from the Monte Pisano mountains. Inside, it’s a homespun delight with antique furnishings that have been in your host’s family for centuries. You’ll split your time between the cosy living space, reclining on the sofa with a glass of robust red, and the enchanting garden – plate up Tuscan favourites at the dining table or sip a coffee beside the trickling brook. We had a particular soft spot for the bedrooms – we loved the nature theme in combination with the original ceiling beams to create a fresh but warm atmosphere. The Walled City of Lucca is an eighteen-minute drive from your abode. Spend sunny afternoons exploring the Renaissance ramparts and the Cattedrale di San Martino. Or why not add leaning towers to your itinerary? Pisa is only a twenty-five-minute drive away.

Just outside the famed artist town of Montecatini Terme, this sprawling villa in the Tuscan countryside is well-placed for exploring not only nearby Florence, but lovely Lucca as well. But while we love the position of this home, we think some guests might end up finding it difficult to leave the premises – with a beautiful mature garden and large swimming pool, this home’s many charms are capped off by a floodlit private tennis court, ping pong table, foosball, and a children’s play area. And that’s before we get to the horses. Keen equestrians – or just the horse curious – will love the fact that this home is neighboured by horse paddocks, with riding lessons and excursions available on request. Inside, the home is decorated in the traditional Tuscan manner, with classic tiling, exposed ceiling beams, and classic furnishings all in evidence. There’s a separate apartment available too, which we think would work wonders for families or friends travelling together. Not that you’ll be spending much time indoors though – with covered terraces, plenty of sun loungers round the pool, and shady spots set up under the trees, this is a home that revels in indoor-outdoor living.

This rural palace, tucked away in a quiet hamlet half an hour from Lucca, is like two homes in one. Such is the contacting styles between the authentic basement and the modern luxury of the ground floor, you'll feel like you've wandered into a new home. 

The idyllic outdoor space is the perfect blend of the two, providing a rustic vibe tinged with deluxe furnishings. Where you spend most of your time depends on your mood and the weather. 

During sunny, summer days, while away the hours in the dreamy space around the pool. Tropical plant life faces into fresh water, creating an exotic oasis, kissed by the summer rays. 

When the months turn cold and you fancy a snug setting, the basement is a restful haven. Rustic, wooden furniture is encompassed by stone walls and a tiled floor. It's an intimate spot to gather for meal times, sharing homemade spaghetti in your secret bunker.

If you fancied exploring beyond your tranquil abode, the cobbled streets of Lucca are just half an hour away. Find cute cafes, vintage wine stores and traditional restaurants.

You can tell you'll be in for a grand stay when you arrive at this terracotta Italian casa. A former 18th-century mansion, it's had a modern glam overhaul and is surrounded by the sweeping Tuscan countryside. Lush gardens frame a sparkling pool, and the pretty city of Lucca – known for its Camellias festival and special olive oil – is a short drive away. Walk into a home filled with beamed ceilings, emerald green shutters, rustic tiled floors, and archways for that luxe Mediterranean ambience. Dining and cooking will be a dream thanks to the shaded outdoor kitchen and elegant table. Savour fresh pasta and chilled wine in the sun as you lounge on the sunbeds by the pool. Stock up on local produce at one of the city's outdoor markets, and return to your villa to fire up the pizza oven. When you want to be a part of the city's hustle and bustle, take the sixteen-minute drive to Lucca and bike along the city walls, losing yourself in the history of what would've been, before indulging in some retail therapy in the Old Town. Admire Piazza dell'Anfiteatro, a magnificent square constructed on the ruins of the ancient Roman amphitheatre that spreads a mix of historical beauty and true Italian flavour – stop for a bite to eat in the courtyard with innumerable cafes and restaurants.

As you arrive in the city of one-hundred churches, you’re sure to hear the bells chiming in harmony as you wander its ancient streets. But there are surprisingly modern pockets in this medieval wonderland. This apartment displays 21st-century sensibilities, while fully immersed in the historic walled city of Lucca. It’s less than a two-minute walk from the bustling main square, Piazza Napoleone, and seven from the wine bars and restaurants of the Piazza dell'Anfiteatro. And inside, traditional meets modern in an incredibly stylish manner. We love the bright, white lounge and open-plan kitchen, where vintage-style armchairs meet the angular lines of the high breakfast bar. Textiles such as velvet and rattan combine with wooden furniture to create a unique space, wrapped in understated luxury. For striking vistas of surrounding architecture like the palace and San Giusto church, head out to your private, covered balcony. The warm, terracotta tones make this spot feel superbly cosy. We recommend a chilled glass of chianti, some fresh Italian bread, and juicy local olives to set the scene. You’ll never tire of these views, it truly feels as though you’re ensconced in the surrounding architecture.

If you’re looking for local immersion in a quintessentially Tuscan home, you've found it. Once the lowly hayloft of a country retreat for nobles, it’s been elevated to something wonderful. It’s rustic – think exposed brick, cooling stone floors and original wood beams – but with the kind of luxe touches that wouldn’t look out of place in a Renaissance townhouse. We love the juxtaposition of homely vibes with ornate flourishes. Who knew chandeliers could look so good in a barn? Set on a private estate, with lush gardens all around, the owners are your only neighbours. Signora Rosa will welcome you with open arms (and maybe even a slice of homemade torta), and the whole family is on hand to help, while also respecting your privacy. There are two complimentary bicycles available for guests, making the five-minute walk to the local town even quicker. Here you can pick up groceries to cook up an alfresco feast; you’ll want to make use of the pretty, shaded outdoor dining area with views over the immaculate grounds. There’s even a wood-fired pizza oven, so you’d better start practising your dough spinning. We’d happily hole up in this place for a week or two, but with a car, it’s the perfect base for exploring Tuscany.
