In fact, the villa was once owned by a noble family from Lucca, and its opulent history is still evident in the home's period features. Admire the original beamed ceilings on the ground floor, and unwind in the elegant living room in front of the fireplace. Upstairs, antique furnishings adorn the bedrooms, and windows look out over the beautiful gardens. We think the lovely outdoor space is where you'll spend most of your time, either relaxing with a drink under the shade of the olive trees or swimming in the pool. We love how much greenery surrounds this home, and how it can make you appreciate the simple things in life as you take a long walk through the flora, breathing in the fresh air and listening to the bird's chirp. The wooden beams definitely give this home the character it deserves, as do the shutters that can be opened to let in light as you gaze out over the trees of an ancient noble villa.
 
When you want to be a part of the city's hustle and bustle, take the sixteen-minute drive to Lucca and bike along the city walls, losing yourself in the history of what would've been, before indulging in some retail therapy in the Old Town. This fabulous home is set in a tranquil rural position, in the hills outside the medieval city of Lucca. With incredible views, a private pool and bags of character, it's everything you could hope for in a Tuscan escape. 

A barn conversion that spans three floors, inside it's all about terracotta floors, historic beamed ceilings and classic Italian country furnishings. We particularly love the flow of the living space, with its cosy sitting area, well-stocked kitchen and formal dining room and we think the bedrooms here are just knock-out. From the master bedroom with its exposed stone wall and four-poster bed to the two versatile twin rooms, there isn't a single one we wouldn't happily retire to after a day in the sun. And each comes with its own ensuite so there won't be any need to queue for the shower.

Outside, the undulating landscape offers excellent viewpoints all over the grounds. Sit outside on the terrace with your drinks in the evening, wander down to the pool or serve your meal under the pretty pergola. And there's an extra surprise in store at this villa – a luxurious Turkish bath on the ground floor.

If day trips are on the agenda, the Tuscan coast is a twelve-minute drive away, and you can reach the Medieval town of Lucca in twenty-three minutes. It’s worth noting that the second bathroom here is on the lower-ground floor, which has a separate entrance, accessed from outside.

Here you’ll find attractions such as the cathedral, Piazza Anfiteatro, and Piazza San Michele, as well as many restaurants, cafes and boutiques.If you don't want to drive, there's a restaurant a short stroll away, too.

This ancient Tuscan hamlet (or ‘borgo’) sits atop a hill, with views over the countryside as far as the eye can see. On a clear day, you can catch a glimpse of Corsica on the horizon. Surrounded by olive groves, organic vegetable gardens, ancient trees and donkey paddocks, this is the place to immerse yourself in provincial Italian life. Plus, the cities of Pisa and Lucca are within day-tripping distance.

Designed by architect Stefano Viviani, this villa blends into the landscape seamlessly. The wooden terrace juts out of the hillside, allowing for panoramic views of the countryside sprawling before you, from the cool of the plunge pool or the soothing heat of the hot tub. Loungers and reclining chairs are set up the face the view and there’s shaded dining and a lounge area on the lower terrace.

Inside, you can see the work of an architect on display in every handmade step, wall of windows and traditional-style fireplace. It’s a vision of soft greys and white, with picture-frame windows at every turn to display the view as proudly as any of the donkey-themed modern artworks on the walls. Sculptures are displayed with museum-level curation, in glass boxes, and the coffee table is littered with thick art books. The kitchen, beneath a wooden ceiling, is an ode to rusticana with a huge island in the centre, yet feels modern in dove grey and light wood. Then there are the bedrooms, both boasting panoramic views from walls of windows the instant you wake up.

Rustic Italian fare, picnics on rolling hills, sun-soaked scenery – it could only be the Tuscan countryside. While the lifestyle of this region might conjure up the idea of hearty meals in Nonna’s kitchen, this home offers quite the opposite. Forty minutes away by car from the medieval walled city of Lucca, this villa is another fine example from the medieval era – a former castle. If you’re looking for the royal treatment, you might have found it.

Set among a spectacular array of fruit trees and bushes in its gardens, the scents of lavender, lemon, orange, and rose are thick in the air. With multiple levelled terraces, you can survey your lush kingdom from the top of the castle. You might find yourself particularly drawn to the glimmering, private pool on the lower level. Give your subjects (or family) a wave from the top, before heading down into the historic interiors. 

Exposed masonry, flagstone floors, and vintage furnishings complete the look in the lounge. But the kitchen is surprisingly modern, with glossy chrome fixtures and marble floors keeping that luxe edge. We love the tub in the main bedroom en-suite – the only place fit for VIPs to sip champagne after a long day exploring these Tuscan lands.
