Forty minutes away by car from the medieval walled city of Lucca, this villa is another fine example from the medieval era – a former castle. If you’re looking for the royal treatment, you might have found it.

Set among a spectacular array of fruit trees and bushes in its gardens, the scents of lavender, lemon, orange, and rose are thick in the air. With multiple levelled terraces, you can survey your lush kingdom from the top of the castle. You might find yourself particularly drawn to the glimmering, private pool on the lower level. Give your subjects (or family) a wave from the top, before heading down into the historic interiors.

Speaking of which, the terrace is what caught our eye most about this home. It’s a generous size, just the spot for alfresco meals or simply soaking up the Tuscan sun with a good book in hand. Location-wise, the beach is a mere hop, skip and jump away, so if the sun gets a little much, you can cool off in the sea in no time.

Making full use of its elevated hillside position, this villa is built tall across three floors and two levels of terraces. Windows line the walls that face out across the wide-open plains of Versilia with its patchwork of sparkling lakes, woodlands and terracotta-tiled towns. Nearby wooded hillsides lead your eye out to the distant mountains rising beyond. Whether you’re swimming in the infinity pool, lounging on the outdoor sofas or gazing out of the panoramic windows, this mesmerising view greets you from all angles. Inside, you’ll find bright and breezy living areas with a feminine feel – think floats of white chiffon, expanses of champagne marble, and white linen curtains fluttering in the breeze. Gardens and patio areas surround the villa, with discreet hedge screens making it feel private despite its neighbours. Distant Horizon

This historic villa and its sprawling grounds look out over the rolling Tuscan hills. In fact, the villa was once owned by a noble family from Lucca, and its opulent history is still evident in the home's period features. Admire the original beamed ceilings on the ground floor, and unwind in the elegant living room in front of the fireplace. Upstairs, antique furnishings adorn the bedrooms, and windows look out over the beautiful gardens. We think the lovely outdoor space is where you'll spend most of your time, either relaxing with a drink under the shade of the olive trees or swimming in the pool. As evening approaches, light the candles and enjoy a barbecue with a glass of local wine. The tree-lined roads surrounding the property are the perfect place for a morning run, and it's only a ten-minute stroll to the local village, where you can enjoy a meal in the medieval square. There's so much more to explore a short drive away, too – venture to the coast and relax on the beach at Viareggio (a twenty-two-minute ride), or wander the Renaissance-era city walls of Lucca, a thirty-minute drive away. 

Noble Hills

Located in the hills above Forte dei Marmi, this home has a wonderful view of the sea. On a clear day, you can see as far as La Spezia and Livorno, as well as the islands of Tinetto, La Gorgona and Elba. You can enjoy the vistas from the jacuzzi and fenced garden or the bedroom’s balcony. The open-plan living space has a kitchenette and a wood burner (this room also sleeps guests three and four). If you want to leave this cosy place and explore, the sandy beaches, chic boutiques and restaurants of Forte dei Marmi are a short drive away.
