The garden and terrace is probably where most of the action will take place, as here you'll find the cobalt pool with salted water, an array of sunbeds, and the sweet sound of the waves lapping into the shore in the distance. Enjoy alfresco meals from the elevated terrace area while taking in the magnificent vistas as the sun sets before you. We love the traditional Tuscan colour scheme featured on the sheltered terrace with terracotta tiles alongside pops of green through plants, window shutters and furniture cushions. Then, through the curved arch and into the house for more elegant design details and classic Tuscan style. 

When you can tear yourself away from the beauty of it all, take a walk in the heart of the historic old town along the tiny streets and small squares that overlook the sea. Not far from Porto Ercole, this home makes the most of its coastal scenery. You'll be just 900 metres from the beach, and the views are downright blissful – they stretch across the sea to the island of Formiche di Burano. Everyone will appreciate the swimming pool, and the terrace makes the perfect spot for a nightcap as the sun goes down. Each bedroom has its own entrance, and the one on the lower ground floor is ideal for those who don't mind steps. When you're ready to explore, you'll find the small village of Ansedonia nearby, as well as Orbetello, which is a ten-minute drive away.

Perched on a cliffside on the edge of Monte Argentario, the sunset views from this home are sublime. From the dining table on the terrace, you can gaze out over the sea and there are plenty of seating nooks in the shade. The real highlight is the private staircase leading down the cliffside to a rocky swim platform set up with loungers and parasols. Just remember, it’s quite a climb back up to the villa. The living room is huge, so big groups will feel at home here, and a wall of windows shows off the sea view inside. Tiles in the bathrooms might be a little garish for some, but who cares when the outside space comes with that view.

Hiring a car is recommended if you fancy exploring the island – let your first stop be Portoferraio, a six-minute drive away.

There are plenty of traditional touches, from the exposed brick and wooden ceiling beams, to the distressed wood dining table. Pick up some local ingredients, and practice your Italian-style cooking in the kitchen – it's a homely space where you can whip up the perfect risotto. When you've finished eating and sipping some Pinot Grigio, you can get comfortable in the peaceful bedroom, for a restful night's sleep. 

Although petite, Suvereto is packed with cultural delights. Wander through the labyrinth of passageways dating back to the medieval era, and stop off in the family-run restaurants for delicious pasta and pizza. Don't miss the Aldobrandesca Fortress and the beautiful Romanesque church, both just a few minutes away from your front door. A twenty-minute drive will bring you to the Etruscan Coast, with its hidden coves and pinewood forests – so, whether you want to lie on a beach or take an invigorating hike through the woods, you'll be very happy here.

The Italian countryside has a magnetic charm. Could it be the holy trinity of wine, food and verdant views? Definitely. Or the temperate Mediterranean climate? Certainly. But it’s also because it’s where you’ll find glorious holiday homes like this one. 

Set in the hills of San Casciano dei Bagni and Chiusi, this magnificent stone farmhouse straddles the border between two fairytale regions – Tuscany and Umbria. Explore both of their charming towns, cultures, and cuisines with ease from this central base. We recommend the neighbouring hillside towns of Cetona and San Casciano dei Bagni, but if you’d like to venture a bit further afield, the nearby railway station in Chiusi allows for breezy day trips to Cortona, Siena and Montepulciano. 

But for all that, you'll have more than enough to keep you busy with all this home has to offer. The well-selected modern furniture and fixtures blend beautifully with the terracotta floors, brick-vaulted ceilings, stone arches and fireplaces. The classical rustic interior transports you to the past, especially with the countryside views from nearly every room. 

And there’s a lot to see – sitting proudly on a five-hectare estate, the home looks out onto both cultivated land and woodland, a lush garden of flowers and cypress trees. Outside, the rolling landscape is best enjoyed by the shimmering stone pool or the romantic, shaded pergola. In the heat of the afternoon, read in the cool of the study before returning to the patio. Lounge until sunset, where the fiery colours linger longer, and are best enjoyed alongside a bold Tuscan red from the cellar.

You can't beat the views of the beautiful Val D'Orcia, itself a UNESCO World Heritage Site, from this Tuscan farmhouse lying in the Siena Province on a private two-acre estate. Tear yourself away from the vistas, and you'll find a deft renovation, combining contemporary interiors and historic charm. An excellent choice for a large group of friends or family, there's plenty of space to spill out and feel at home here. Cool off from the Tuscan sun in the infinity pool. Put to use the vast, chef-worthy kitchen (we're talking two dishwashers, two ovens, and some) for a big dinner party – a private chef is bookable for fine dining. Or keep things easy and fire up the barbecue or pizza oven outside as breath-taking views of the valley spread out before you –  best seen beneath the pergola at sunset with a glass of something chilled. And on chiller nights, hunker down beside the fireplace with a good book – there are two living rooms to choose from. When it's time to lay your head, hop in the home's elevator and take your pick from the many bedrooms, boasting king-sized beds and separate bathrooms. We'll let you decide who lucks out on that ground floor suite with bi-folds opening onto the lawned gardens. Should you ever wish to leave this idyll, you'll find you're in an excellent base to uncover Tuscany's vineyards and historic villages, starting in Sarteano, just a ten-minute drive away. With its tempting trattorias and beguiling historic charms, you'll be off to a flying start.

This Suvereto apartment may be small, but what it lacks in size, it makes up for in charm. Walls of exposed stone, sumptuous antique beds and ceilings adorned with wooden beams paint the picture of a traditional Tuscan holiday. Yet, in spite of the compact size, the kitchen and bathroom are sleek, stylish and modern, just the ticket for two. The window seat is our favourite spot – in the mornings, there's nothing better than enjoying an espresso as the smell of fresh-baked bread rises from the bakery below.

One of Tuscany's hidden gems, Suvereto is rife with old-world character – picture medieval walls, cobblestone streets and sidewalk cafes overlooking ancient churches. We love the laid-back pace of life here, but with vineyards, hiking trails and beaches like Spiaggia di Rimigliano all a short drive away, you'll be well-placed for exploring, too.

Downstairs you will find the original stone olive mill, alongside chestnut beams, exposed stone, and terracotta tiling across the house. This preserved charm is compounded by contemporary bathrooms, and a sunroom with floor to ceiling windows, where you can admire the oil painting of a view. On cooler nights, gather here with a drink in hand for a movie or to play some music. Outside there is a table which seats ten, for al fresco dinners before a spot of stargazing.

La Casa di Pietra

This gorgeous pale stone house is tucked just outside of the small town of Palazzone in the Tuscan countryside. Stroll around the village of Panicale, right on your doorstep, or drive over to Perugia for a tour of the excavations under San Lorenzo cathedral, followed by a mosey around Porta Sole, the city’s creative quarter. When dusk falls, pick out a family-run restaurant for a selection of hearty local dishes.
