Perched on the rolling Tuscan hills outside the Medieval city of Lucca sits this grandiose home – a memory of a bygone age of Italian opulence. The breathtaking gardens are a particular highlight of the home, with the well-tended green grass lawns surrounded by Mediterranean herb bushes, cypress and cedar trees, and various specimens of exotic palm trees. Enjoy an afternoon cocktail, sitting in the sunshine in one of the wicker armchairs, or challenge a friend to a game of table tennis on the lawn. Alternatively, sit down with the family to enjoy an alfresco meal around the shaded outdoor dinner table, perhaps with food cooked on the mobile barbecue. Take a dip in the pool to cool off from the midday Tuscan sun. Inside the villa, the theme of elegant opulence continues with the beautiful living room, and four unique bedrooms. The master bedroom even boasts an en-suite bathroom with both a shower and a jacuzzi jet bath for unwinding and relaxing after a day of seeing the sights. In the kitchen, the traditional wood-fired oven is perfect for cooking handmade pizza. Finally, there's a children’s playroom for the little ones, as well as a home gym with a running treadmill and a weights bench to keep in shape.

Cedar Serenity

This stunning apartment offers the perfect blend of modern architecture and luxurious amenities. It’s located within the ancient walls of Lucca, making it a convenient base for exploring the city. The terrace is undoubtedly the star of the show at this home, boasting views of Lucca and a Jacuzzi for you to unwind in. The apartment is chic and stylish, equipped with everything you might need during your stay – you can look forward to a state-of-the-art sound system and a lighting system to curate the perfect ambience. 

Medieval meets Modern

This beautiful home sits amid the rolling hills outside of Orentano, a Tuscan village. Thousands of hectares of woods and countryside surround the home, which is part of an estate owned by a celebrated wine-maker. Lucca is less than thirty minutes away, while Florence and San Gimignano can be reached in an hour – here, you get convenience as well as elegance. Closer to home, you can stroll into Orentano for pizza, or drive ten minutes to Altopascio to try the famed Altopascio bread. 

The veranda that wraps around the home is where we’d start each day, sipping coffee and taking in the view. Later on, you might swim a few lengths in the private pool, before lounging beneath wooden beams in the grand yet inviting living room. Meals can be enjoyed in the shade of the veranda, accompanied by lots of local wine. You’ll never want to leave this idyll. 


Vino on the Veranda

Blending traditional cottage charm with big, bold design features, this Italian villa is the stuff of our design dreams. Set in the heart of the Tuscan countryside, the former farmhouse has been brought into the 21st century, with double-height windows, a white panelled gourmet kitchen and contemporary light fixtures. There's still plenty of old-school charm; we love the mix of exposed brick, wooden beams and old fireplaces in the living area. Bedrooms each have their own theme, from the jet black double to the pastel-striped master suite – though given this home's quiet location, you're going to get a good night's sleep wherever you lay your head. Our favourite part? The home's patio with its dining set and wicker sofas, with enough room for the whole group to gather round and watch the sunset. 

Star-Sprinkled Skies

Set amidst the Val di Nievole, this terracotta hideaway combines Tuscan charm with contemporary touches. Views of the countryside await outdoors, whether swimming in the private pool, snoozing on a sun lounger, or savouring a glass of Italian wine on the terrace. Head indoors, and you'll find cosy living spaces, a sleek kitchen, and four comfortable bedrooms. Keen to explore? Montecatini Terme, known for its healing spas, and Pescia, famous for flowers, are both a short drive away. A day trip to Lucca, just 16 kilometres by car, could also be on the cards.

Sing of Spring

Many illustrious figures throughout history have made Tuscany what it is today. From Leonardo da Vinci to Galileo, their masterpieces and works have shaped the region, drawing us in with a thirst for exploration and experience. The landscape is dotted with works of art in the form of cities like Florence, and the hillsides are so untainted it’s as if they’ve been captured by an artist on canvas forever. They say a picture is worth a thousand words, and we can’t think of a better phrase to describe this home. Windows, doorways and shutters seize the views of Tuscany from every possible angle, providing snapshots of the world outside like moving pictures. There’s a level of luxury in this home which mirrors the stately historical architecture, making you feel as if you’ve stepped into the shoes of Italian society. And what better way to honour those who have come before, than by engaging in the tradition of an aperitivo in the garden before dinner? Saluti.  

Tactile Artistry

In the charming village of Castelvecchio, terracotta roofs sit at jaunty angles within this hilly hamlet, contrasting beautifully with the verdant greens of surrounding Tuscan landscapes. While the region feels incredibly peaceful, it’s only a twenty-two-minute drive from the bustling medieval town of Lucca, and just over thirty from the city of Pisa. But this home feels a world away from any sort of metropolis.

A former farmhouse set in lush grounds, the owners recently renovated the building while retaining its old-world charm. With the scents of olive groves at ground level, and incredibly clear starry skies above, your rural retreat offers everything you’d expect from country living, but with a modern, luxury edge. The huge, panoramic private pool has views of the local village, and Lucca further afield, while your wooden patio is equipped with a barbecue and dining set for alfresco meals.

After sundown, head inside to admire the interiors, merging original elements with 21st-century updates. Exposed stone walls, flagstone floors, and wooden beamed ceilings ooze Tuscan tradition. But its fresh, white colour palette, chandeliers, and Scandi-style open wardrobes are elegant reminders of the modern age.

The Frantoio Olive

Just outside the famed artist town of Montecatini Terme, this sprawling villa in the Tuscan countryside is well-placed for exploring not only nearby Florence, but lovely Lucca as well. But while we love the position of this home, we think some guests might end up finding it difficult to leave the premises – with a beautiful mature garden and large swimming pool, this home’s many charms are capped off by a floodlit private tennis court, ping pong table, foosball, and a children’s play area. And that’s before we get to the horses. Keen equestrians – or just the horse curious – will love the fact that this home is neighboured by horse paddocks, with riding lessons and excursions available on request. Inside, the home is decorated in the traditional Tuscan manner, with classic tiling, exposed ceiling beams, and classic furnishings all in evidence. There’s a separate apartment available too, which we think would work wonders for families or friends travelling together. Not that you’ll be spending much time indoors though – with covered terraces, plenty of sun loungers round the pool, and shady spots set up under the trees, this is a home that revels in indoor-outdoor living.

A Little Horse Play

This magnificent sixteenth-century villa, set amidst the green countryside, under the Tuscan sun, is a dream spot for a large family get together, or an escape for a group of friends. 

Opulence is the name of the game here, and we were immediately seduced by this home’s charm. Firstly, its setting is truly idyllic, with stunning vistas of rolling green hills, punctuated by dark and majestic cypress trees. Evenings are particularly enchanting, and you’ll no doubt find yourself organising elegant suppers and aperitivos, with the glow of the setting sun as your backdrop. The covered, outdoor dining area invites those communal feasts, with the laid-back, dolce-far-niente vibe. In the heat of the afternoon sun, you can cool yourself in the lovely swimming pool, and work on your tan on one of the sun loungers dotted around. 

The inside of the villa is a stunning mélange of classic Italian style with modern comfort. We love the incredible attention to detail with which the interior has been decorated, and you’ll find yourself wandering around these rooms, admiring the art and the unique pieces scattered about. There is more than enough space to lounge about, with comfy sofas and chairs, and you can also enjoy sumptuous indoor feasts in the large dining room. 

The luxurious feeling continues into the bedrooms, which are plush, spacious, and stylishly decorated, with comfy beds carrying the promise of restful sleep. 
Wake up to the sound of the birds outside, and plan your day of exploring the countryside while enjoying a cup of freshly brewed Italian coffee on your terrace. 


Mascarpone

Experience the Tuscan dream at this apartment in a restored 14th-century farmhouse. It’s situated in a private estate set among olive groves in the hills above Lucca. You can enjoy the stunning valley views from the private terrace. Or relax by the shared pool in the beautiful communal gardens overlooking the medieval village of San Gennaro. Inside this two-level home, you’ll find traditional interiors with features such as chestnut beams and terracotta floors. When you want to explore the area, visit scenic Lucca, a short drive away. Or go for a twenty-minute walk up the hill to the village of San Gennaro for local dining options.


Olive Grove Vistas

This farmhouse villa is an ideal base for exploring some gorgeous Tuscan cities and towns. Made up of a main house and a hayloft with its own living room and kitchen, there's plenty of space for a family or group of friends to stretch out. We think a couple of areas could do with a touch-up, especially in the hayloft, but the views over the Compitese hills from the private pool are lovely. You'll want a car for exploring, and there's no shortage of hot spots like Lucca, Pisa, and Florence nearby.
