Set on an estate dotted with trees, shrubs, and other native foliage, this home ecompasses the entire first floor of an ancient villa in Orentano. Despite sharing things like the pool, tennis court, and soccer field with another home, there is enough room on the property for it to still feel private. That’s probably helped along by the fact that you have your own private garden and barbecue – not to mention the sheer size of the home itself. Move easily between rooms and use the easy go-between as an excuse to nip into the kitchen for another cup of coffee and a dozen more biscotti to take back to where you’re reading on the plush sofa. Take the spiral staircase up to the loft where you’ll find the rustic bedrooms and bathrooms for when you’re ready to turn in at night. When you think loft, you might conjure up images of a tight squeeze, but the addition of the skylights in almost every room here allows the light to make the space feel more open. 

With the host and his family living on the estate, you’ll sometimes find yourself around the table enjoying their homemade pasta alfresco with soft music playing in the background. There’s also a brick pizza oven here, so don’t be surprised if you eat more margarita than you’d care to – we know, that is not even remotely possible. 

When you’re not enjoying the home, you can make a trip to Pisa, Voltera, or Florence – each with their unique charm – or borrow the bicycles and simply explore the surroundings on two wheels instead of four. After a day of activity under the Tuscan sun, take a late-night swim in the heated pool, and when you’re ready to return inside, why not linger a little while longer to gaze up at the stars.

This sweet stone farmhouse just a 10-minute drive from Lucca is a glorious spot for two couples or a small family to live the Tuscan dream. Through the antique gate in a low stone wall, this hillside home has a private swimming pool surrounded by lovely mature gardens. Rich, green trees shield the expansive garden from view and there’s plenty of space for outdoor lounging. Cook alfresco at the brick summer kitchen and dine by lantern light as crickets sing in the greenery around you. Inside, sandwiched between ancient wooden beams and terracotta floors, are farmhouse-chic interiors in soothing pastel tones. But a quirky suspended staircase and macrame chandelier in the lounge add a little surprise. Bedrooms in pastel pink and dove grey feel fairytale fine beneath the old wooden ceiling of the home. This magnificent sixteenth-century villa, set amidst the green countryside, under the Tuscan sun, is a dream spot for a large family get together, or an escape for a group of friends. 

Opulence is the name of the game here, and we were immediately seduced by this home’s charm. Firstly, its setting is truly idyllic, with stunning vistas of rolling green hills, punctuated by dark and majestic cypress trees. Evenings are particularly enchanting, and you’ll no doubt find yourself organising elegant suppers and aperitivos, with the glow of the setting sun as your backdrop. The covered, outdoor dining area invites those communal feasts, with the laid-back, dolce-far-niente vibe. In the heat of the afternoon sun, you can cool yourself in the lovely swimming pool, and work on your tan on one of the sun loungers dotted around. 

The inside of the villa is a stunning mélange of classic Italian style with modern comfort. We love the incredible attention to detail with which the interior has been decorated, and you’ll find yourself wandering around these rooms, admiring the art and the unique pieces scattered about. There is more than enough space to lounge about, with comfy sofas and chairs, and you can also enjoy sumptuous indoor feasts in the large dining room.

Bientina is just a five-minute drive away, an active town comprised of an olympic swimming pool, tennis courts and many fine restaurants. If you're really up for an adventure, Pisa and Florence are less than an hour away.

It's got all the essentials you'll need – a well-appointed kitchen, two cosy bedrooms, and two convenient bathrooms. Speaking of convenience, the location is a big plus. Right in the heart of Montecarlo, you'll be treated to sweeping views of rolling hills and the area's vineyards. The charming main street is right on your doorstep – as is a prestigious Michelin-starred restaurant. Lucca is slightly further afield, yet still within easy driving distance – perfect for a day trip.

Filled with antiques and dark wood furnishings giving a nod to old-world influence, there's something very wholesome about this home. We think you'll love immersing yourself in Italian culture here. Wake up to bedroom views of the golden skies dancing above the Italian landscape. Cook up a big meal and serve it at the outside table while the family scrambles to get theirs first. Stay out late relaxing on the terrace with a glass of Chianti and chat the night away while the vibrant colours of the garden fade into the darkness. The garden area will be the hub of your trip, that's for sure.

We recommend hiring a car here as there's plenty to do and see within a short drive. The historic town of Lucca with its colourful buildings and ancient monuments is only twenty-six-minutes away, and the lovable Pisa with its must-see leaning tower is a thirty-eight-minute drive. No matter where you choose to go, you'll find vibrant Italian culture to soak up (and so much good food). The home itself is located in the village of Sant’Andrea di Compito – a place known for its stunning Camellia trees dating back to the 1800s. We recommend wandering its streets and taking in the medieval charm.

This farmhouse villa is an ideal base for exploring some gorgeous Tuscan cities and towns. Made up of a main house and a hayloft with its own living room and kitchen, there's plenty of space for a family or group of friends to stretch out. We think a couple of areas could do with a touch-up, especially in the hayloft, but the views over the Compitese hills from the private pool are lovely. You'll want a car for exploring, and there's no shortage of hot spots like Lucca, Pisa, and Florence nearby.

Surrounded by olive groves and vineyards, this villa offers rest and relaxation for a family or group of friends in the Tuscan countryside. You’ll spend most of your time outside here, thanks to the private swimming pool, dining terrace and four-poster sunbed. But when you do head inside, we recommend making a beeline for the Jacuzzi. Location-wise, restaurants are a short drive away if you don’t fancy cooking. The village of Montecarlo is around a five-minute drive away, and Lucca is reached in around fifteen minutes by car.

If you’re a wine connoisseur, then this elegant Tuscan home, set on a winery, could be for you. There are beautiful views over the private vineyards and countryside from the infinity swimming pool. Inside, we love the conservatory – the perfect place to dine under the stars. The main bedroom suite is another highlight of this home, as you can see. You may not want to leave this luxurious farmhouse, but if you do there are many charming towns nearby to explore – we’d recommend hiring a car to get the most out of your stay.

Tuscan Winery

This beautiful home sits amid the rolling hills outside of Orentano, a Tuscan village. Thousands of hectares of woods and countryside surround the home, which is part of an estate owned by a celebrated wine-maker. Lucca is less than thirty minutes away, while Florence and San Gimignano can be reached in an hour – here, you get convenience as well as elegance. Closer to home, you can stroll into Orentano for pizza, or drive ten minutes to Altopascio to try the famed Altopascio bread. 

The veranda that wraps around the home is where we’d start each day, sipping coffee and taking in the view. Later on, you might swim a few lengths in the private pool, before lounging beneath wooden beams in the grand yet inviting living room. Meals can be enjoyed in the shade of the veranda, accompanied by lots of local wine. You’ll never want to leave this idyll.

Just outside the famed artist town of Montecatini Terme, this sprawling villa in the Tuscan countryside is well-placed for exploring not only nearby Florence, but lovely Lucca as well. But while we love the position of this home, we think some guests might end up finding it difficult to leave the premises – with a beautiful mature garden and large swimming pool, this home’s many charms are capped off by a floodlit private tennis court, ping pong table, foosball, and a children’s play area. And that’s before we get to the horses. Keen equestrians – or just the horse curious – will love the fact that this home is neighboured by horse paddocks, with riding lessons and excursions available on request. Inside, the home is decorated in the traditional Tuscan manner, with classic tiling, exposed ceiling beams, and classic furnishings all in evidence. There’s a separate apartment available too, which we think would work wonders for families or friends travelling together. Not that you’ll be spending much time indoors though – with covered terraces, plenty of sun loungers round the pool, and shady spots set up under the trees, this is a home that revels in indoor-outdoor living.

A Little Horse Play

Blending traditional cottage charm with big, bold design features, this Italian villa is the stuff of our design dreams. Set in the heart of the Tuscan countryside, the former farmhouse has been brought into the 21st century, with double-height windows, a white panelled gourmet kitchen and contemporary light fixtures. There's still plenty of old-school charm; we love the mix of exposed brick, wooden beams and old fireplaces in the living area. Bedrooms each have their own theme, from the jet black double to the pastel-striped master suite – though given this home's quiet location, you're going to get a good night's sleep wherever you lay your head. Our favourite part? The home's patio with its dining set and wicker sofas, with enough room for the whole group to gather round and watch the sunset.

Set on the rolling hills of Montecarlo and surrounded by vineyards and olive groves, you'll find yourself in awe of the countryside views when you stay at this traditional villa. From the moment you arrive and enter the gated driveway, you'll realise this is somewhere special. Completely fenced and bordered with hedges, fragrant flowers and antique terracotta pots, the 5,000sqm garden here feels more like a park. Kids will enjoy the outdoor ping pong table, while the adults enjoy sipping sundowners and sharing nibbles in the alfresco dining space, surrounded by the scents of the surrounding vineyards. And let's not forget the Roman-style pool, lined in beautiful blue mosaic tiles with hydromassage jets that invite you to lean back and relax. Inside, this home is just as impressive, with beautiful artwork and elegant antique furniture everywhere you look. We particularly love the green marble spiral staircase, which adds an air of opulence to the space. We're sure you'll be more than content here, but if you want to venture out, the ancient Montecarlo Fortress is close by.

Just a short drive from Lucca, this traditional farmhouse opens its doors to the simple pleasures of Italian living. Consisting of a main house and an adjoining hayloft (with its own kitchen) which also has A/C, this is a great option for groups in search of peace, privacy and a beautiful setting. The private pool is ideal for afternoon dips, and there's a large garden and plenty to explore in the surroundings. Outside you can follow hiking trails straight from the door, while cities like Pisa and Florence are also within driving distance.

It’s rustic – think exposed brick, cooling stone floors and original wood beams – but with the kind of luxe touches that wouldn’t look out of place in a Renaissance townhouse. We love the juxtaposition of homely vibes with ornate flourishes. Who knew chandeliers could look so good in a barn? Set on a private estate, with lush gardens all around, the owners are your only neighbours. Signora Rosa will welcome you with open arms (and maybe even a slice of homemade torta), and the whole family is on hand to help, while also respecting your privacy. There are two complimentary bicycles available for guests, making the five-minute walk to the local town even quicker. Here you can pick up groceries to cook up an alfresco feast; you’ll want to make use of the pretty, shaded outdoor dining area with views over the immaculate grounds. There’s even a wood-fired pizza oven, so you’d better start practising your dough spinning. We’d happily hole up in this place for a week or two, but with a car, it’s the perfect base for exploring Tuscany.

Let’s start with that view, particularly from the outdoor dining table on the lawn – a patchwork of fields and orange-roofed towns in the valley below stretches for miles. A turquoise rectangle of swimming pool invites you for a dip in the heat of the day. The Winemaker's Neighbour

This rustic farmhouse surrounded by picturesque hills makes for a restful Tuscan retreat. The interiors are a little dated in parts, but perfectly comfortable for a rural stay – the dining room with panoramic windows is a highlight. Outside, the terrace offers swing seats, loungers and a dining area, so you can maximise every moment with those country views. The unpaved track to this house is a little tricky to navigate, so it’s not the best for low-suspension cars. Nearby you’ll find Pescia’s authentic restaurants and shops, while Lucca lies less than 25km away should you feel like a day in the city.

Found in an ancient hamlet in Lucca, this Italian cottage charms with stone walls and exposed beams.  Because of its age, the interior is that of a more traditional home, which might not be to everyone's taste. Still, it's comfortable and family-friendly.  It's worth noting the sloped ceilings could be hazardous to taller guests, and there's no air conditioning in the third bedroom. With ample outdoor seating, you can take in the greenery on the horizon with a glass of wine. The swimming pool above ground also gives you a unique view of the village. For day trips, venture to Pisa or Lucca – both reachable by car.

The layout here won’t suit everyone – the home is spread over several floors and one of the staircases is open – and the traditional decor won’t be to everyone’s tastes, but it’s a great option for those seeking a house with personality. We love how much greenery surrounds this home, and how it can make you appreciate the simple things in life as you take a long walk through the flora, breathing in the fresh air and listening to the bird's chirp. The wooden beams definitely give this home the character it deserves, as do the shutters that can be opened to let in light as you gaze out over the trees of an ancient noble villa.
 
When you want to be a part of the city's hustle and bustle, take the sixteen-minute drive to Lucca and bike along the city walls, losing yourself in the history of what would've been, before indulging in some retail therapy in the Old Town. Admire Piazza dell'Anfiteatro, a magnificent square constructed on the ruins of the ancient Roman amphitheatre that spreads a mix of historical beauty and true Italian flavour – stop for a bite to eat in the courtyard with innumerable cafes and restaurants.

We suggest a car for ease –  there are restaurants less than 2km away and the pretty town of Montecatini is 15km from the home.
