In the undulating Tuscan countryside, this villa sits atop a hill, right on the ancient oil and wine route through olive groves and vineyards. It’s a fifteen-minute drive from Volterra, a medieval walled town with plenty of farm-to-table restaurants and old churches to explore. And Siena is just under an hour’s drive for a day trip.

Panoramic views take centre stage outdoors, where raised terraces can provide shaded spots for meals outside. From a poolside lounger, you can admire the forest-clad hills around you, before slipping into the turquoise pool to cool off from the sun. Aperitivo is best served on the first-floor terrace, where comfy seating looks out over the countryside.

The villa may have the stone facade and arched windows of a traditional Tuscan farmhouse, but the wall of glass in the living and dining room is a testament to the 21st century. There’s more than enough room for the group to spread out and dine together at two banquet-sized tables inside. Unwind beneath a brick vaulted ceiling in the evening. Chefs will feel right at home in the kitchen – all chrome and steel like the professional kitchens of a Michelin-starred restaurant, but with a wood-topped pasta-making table straight out of a 19th-century farmhouse.

Built in 1883, the farmhouse has been lovingly renovated to retain historic features while adding modern comforts. This home is ideal for a group of friends or family who want privacy as upstairs are two mini-apartments connected internally to the main house but with a separate entrance from the mezzanine floor. On the ground floor, there's also a suite with independent access – here, you'll find a kitchenette and bathroom, as well as a bedroom.

Situated in the Val di Cecina, you'll find unspoilt countryside, dotted with gorgeous towns such as Volterra, eighteen minutes in the car. There are many Roman remains to visit, like the Roman Theatre, or take some photos of the central Palazzo dei Priori with its medieval frescoes and a bell tower. Originally a small, rural stone building, this villa has been extended and modernised, allowing it to blend into the landscape. And what a setting it is, the views of the Tuscan countryside are beautiful – enjoy them from the swimming pool (heated for a fee) and the hot tub. Inside, there's plenty of room to entertain your family or friends, and if you must work while on holiday, well there are a couple of workstations in two bedrooms. We'd also recommend a car to get the most out of the area. You'll find Volterra 14 kilometres and San Gimignano 18 kilometres away.

There are plenty of original features to admire inside, from the fireplace to the wooden ceiling beams. Budding chefs can practice their favourite Italian dishes in the kitchen, and serve up their culinary creations at the rustic table. Outside, you'll find a gorgeous covered space where you can relax and drink in the stunning views across the countryside. And, when the temperature rises, it's time to plunge into the sparkling swimming pool for a refreshing dip. 

There's still a working farm in the surrounding fields, and the host is happy to introduce kids to the animals or put you in touch with the local riding stables to arrange a hack. There are some charming walks nearby, and you can also drive to Monterufoli-Caselli Nature Reserve in just thirty minutes for adventures in the great outdoors. And, with the historic villages of Micciano and Libbiano both ten minutes away by car, there's plenty to keep you busy.

Split between a main house and a 12th-century tower, there’s plenty of space for the whole group to spread out. Each room is equipped with mosquito nets and fans, so you’ll be plenty comfortable during the summer. The age of the place means there are some signs of wear and tear, but we think that adds to the charm. Outside, there’s a swimming pool and a dining terrace for meals in the sunshine.

The villa – comprising four residential units – is perfect for several families as there’s plenty of space to spend time together while still enjoying privacy. From its position in the hills, the villa offers beautiful views of the surrounding landscape, which can be admired from the well-kept garden and terracotta outdoor dining area. The scent of verbena, lilies, and rosemary pervades the garden. This stylish and elegant home has been renovated to add modern comforts while retaining all the charm of a typical Tuscan farmhouse.

We love the barbecue area where an old well has been turned into an innovative grill, there’s a cast-iron bread oven and plenty of prep space for the chef of the group to tinker away. 

The highlight inside has to be the farmhouse-style kitchen with its electric oven that looks like the bread ovens of old and marble-topped counters against exposed stone walls. The barrel-vaulted dining room harks back to days gone by and throughout you’ll find wooden ceilings and terracotta floors. The living room is a surprisingly sleek and modern space, but the bedrooms – with wrought-iron frames against crisp white walls – are back to Tuscan rusticana. 

You’re out in the rolling hills of southern Tuscany here, but it’s a short hop in the car to Pomarance where you’ll find supermarkets for supplies, and a healthy handful of pizzerias, local bars and coffee shops.

Just a few minutes' drive from the hamlet of Iano, the location is perfect for reaching the art cities of Florence, Pisa, Siena and Lucca or medieval towns like Volterra and San Gimignano, while keen hikers and mountain bikers will love the surrounding hills. There's precious little to distract you, rather, days are spent soaking up the sun, walking in the forest or cooling off in the pool. Set in two square kilometres of gardens, with manicured lawns, fragrant herbs and towering cypress trees, it’s an imposing Tuscan country home, with two wings and a separate annexe. Found in Casino di Terra in Pisa province, its style could be described as “typically Tuscan”, with its whitewashed walls and terracotta tiles, bare stonework and exposed beams, making for a relaxing, traditional vibe. The two wing set-up makes it great for two families to share, especially as there’s a good mixture of double and single beds (including three rooms where you can choose to zip them together or separate them to suit). Throw in the pool area, with its outdoor shower and nighttime illumination, stone barbecue and a poolside portico for outdoor dining in all weathers, and you’ve got the makings of a seriously nice Italian holiday.

The farm produces its own Tuscan olive oil and honey, and there is even a top rated restaurant where you can sample some of the farm’s produce. Days can be spent riding the horses from the stable, exploring the area by E-bike, or taking a cookery class at the restaurant, where you might learn how to make fresh pasta or cantuccini. On more relaxed afternoons, treat yourself to a spa or beauty treatment – there is nothing more serene than a massage in the garden, with a gentle breeze and a soundtrack of cicadas.

The outside space is lush and pretty. Roses and lavender have been planted alongside a wealth of trees, making the garden feel like an oasis. In the morning, sip coffee at the table under the gazebo, admiring the views and planning your day. If you’re anything like us, you won’t be able to resist a dip in the hedge-lined swimming pool for long.
