Originally a small, rural stone building, this villa has been extended and modernised, allowing it to blend into the landscape. And what a setting it is, the views of the Tuscan countryside are beautiful – enjoy them from the swimming pool (heated for a fee) and the hot tub. Inside, there's plenty of room to entertain your family or friends, and if you must work while on holiday, well there are a couple of workstations in two bedrooms. We'd also recommend a car to get the most out of the area. You'll find Volterra 14 kilometres and San Gimignano 18 kilometres away.

In the undulating Tuscan countryside, this villa sits atop a hill, right on the ancient oil and wine route through olive groves and vineyards. It’s a fifteen-minute drive from Volterra, a medieval walled town with plenty of farm-to-table restaurants and old churches to explore. And Siena is just under an hour’s drive for a day trip.

Panoramic views take centre stage outdoors, where raised terraces can provide shaded spots for meals outside. From a poolside lounger, you can admire the forest-clad hills around you, before slipping into the turquoise pool to cool off from the sun. Aperitivo is best served on the first-floor terrace, where comfy seating looks out over the countryside.

The villa may have the stone facade and arched windows of a traditional Tuscan farmhouse, but the wall of glass in the living and dining room is a testament to the 21st century. There’s more than enough room for the group to spread out and dine together at two banquet-sized tables inside. Unwind beneath a brick vaulted ceiling in the evening. Chefs will feel right at home in the kitchen – all chrome and steel like the professional kitchens of a Michelin-starred restaurant, but with a wood-topped pasta-making table straight out of a 19th-century farmhouse.

Spend days unwinding within the tranquil environs of the home and its sprawling gardens filled with mature trees and boasting a lovely fenced swimming pool area. Grab a book and delve into its pages in the shade of one of these trees, or catch some of the Southern Italian sunshine, before dipping into the refreshing waters of the pool as the aromas from the garden's many plants hang heavy in the air. 

Leaving the grounds of the home, you'll find yourself within easy reach of typical towns of the region, including historic Volterra and San Gimignano, as well as Florence and Siena, where you will be able to sample not only the local way of life but also the fabulously flavourful Tuscan cuisine. With bellies rumbling, you can either put the well-equipped traditional kitchen to the test and try your hand at replicating old favourites and new delicacies discovered on your sojourns of the local area. Or, make your way to one of the numerous nearby trattorias and spend the evening feasting alfresco.

If you've ever imagined the quintessential Tuscan villa, this luxurious home in the hills between Florence and the sea is about as perfect as they come. The stunning views are best enjoyed from the many balconies and terraces, or from the beautiful infinity pool with its built-in hot tub, while other fabulous perks outside include the vegetable garden, chicken coop and children's treehouse, along with outdoor table tennis, a five-a-side football pitch and private fishing lake. 

Inside, it's a traditional and elegant home, with classical furnishings and tasteful decor. We love the period features like the terracotta floors, beamed ceilings, archways and fireplace, while the pretty country kitchen is enough to make any keen cook smile. The bedrooms are all romantic and comfortable, dressed with antique furniture and each boasting its own bathroom. Plus, there's an extensive wine cellar and, if you're a fitness fan, there's even a fully equipped gym in the nearby building.

If you don't feel like cooking, there's an on-site chef who can be hired to take care of it for you or you can arrange for some Tuscan cooking classes – paired with excellent local wine. Just a few minutes' drive from the hamlet of Iano, the location is perfect for reaching the art cities of Florence, Pisa, Siena and Lucca or medieval towns like Volterra and San Gimignano, while keen hikers and mountain bikers will love the surrounding hills. And for a day at the beach, the coast and places like Livorno are less than an hour away by car.

Out here in the Tuscan countryside, you can live the rustic idyll where days are spent reading a book in the shade of an olive tree or dining as a group outside in the shade of a pergola. Add a private hot tub and a newly built swimming pool into the mix and you’re got the perfect rural get-away. The verdant green garden is enclosed by an old stone wall and within the grounds, you’ll find a shaded olive grove and an orchard furnished with hanging chairs and bistro tables to seclude yourself away. We love the barbecue area where an old well has been turned into an innovative grill, there’s a cast-iron bread oven and plenty of prep space for the chef of the group to tinker away. 

The highlight inside has to be the farmhouse-style kitchen with its electric oven that looks like the bread ovens of old and marble-topped counters against exposed stone walls. The barrel-vaulted dining room harks back to days gone by and throughout you’ll find wooden ceilings and terracotta floors. The living room is a surprisingly sleek and modern space, but the bedrooms – with wrought-iron frames against crisp white walls – are back to Tuscan rusticana. 

You’re out in the rolling hills of southern Tuscany here, but it’s a short hop in the car to Pomarance where you’ll find supermarkets for supplies, and a healthy handful of pizzerias, local bars and coffee shops.

Open up the curtains and take in the view of the rolling hills and over the vineyards. The villa can be found just outside of the village of Fabbrica, which you can walk to for a coffee in four minutes. From the garden, the view stretches all the way to Volterra – it’s thirty-four minutes away by car and is ideal for day trips. 

Outside, the large paved garden is perfect for dining alfresco, be it for breakfast or for catered dinners. If you’re anything like us, you’ll want to spend much of your day swimming in the salt-water pool or lazing in the sunshine. The pool area is glorious, with spectacular views and enough comfy sun loungers for everyone.

Don’t be thrown by the neon pool umbrellas – everything else about this villa is pure class. Set in two square kilometres of gardens, with manicured lawns, fragrant herbs and towering cypress trees, it’s an imposing Tuscan country home, with two wings and a separate annexe. Found in Casino di Terra in Pisa province, its style could be described as “typically Tuscan”, with its whitewashed walls and terracotta tiles, bare stonework and exposed beams, making for a relaxing, traditional vibe. The two wing set-up makes it great for two families to share, especially as there’s a good mixture of double and single beds (including three rooms where you can choose to zip them together or separate them to suit). Throw in the pool area, with its outdoor shower and nighttime illumination, stone barbecue and a poolside portico for outdoor dining in all weathers, and you’ve got the makings of a seriously nice Italian holiday.

The apartment itself is housed in a striking 16th-century building just outside the bridge that leads to il Castello.
