The region is home to rolling hills, centuries-old olive groves, and must-see cities such as Perugia and Cortona – all easily accessible by car. Although the open-plan living room isn't huge, you'll likely spend most of your time outside, whether exploring the vegetable garden, lavender fields, or olive groves (ask nicely and you might be able to sample some homemade olive oil). Cool off in the shared pool and then retreat to the patio with drinks at sunset to round off a dreamy Italian getaway.

Handily, there is also a separate, self-contained annexe for those who require some extra privacy. It comes with its own kitchen, en-suite and billiard table. Outside, the large, inviting pool is where we suspect you’ll spend most of your time. The well kept garden surrounding the villa is an extremely relaxing place to unwind – get the outdoor pizza oven on and set the world to rights until the sun goes down. Whether you're taking in the views from your bedroom or the pool, you can expect to see a gentle Italian farmer going about his business in the fields surrounding the house. Evenings can be spent dining al fresco and watching the stars from the beautiful terrace. You'll definitely need a car to get around this rural area, but that's a small price to pay for this peaceful setting.

Admittedly, the grounds are very impressive, but the home itself shouldn’t be pushed aside. In homage to its former life, it combines a regal touch with rustic elements and the result is magnetic. Musicians might find themselves especially drawn to the piano where they can sit down and play as the rest of the group gathers in front of the fireplace in the lounge. 

Come together around the breakfast table – which the housekeeper will dress with the ingredients you purchased from the market – and set off shortly after to explore the rolling Tuscan countryside. If you want to stay put, play boardgames in one of the bigger rooms or take to the pool. Evenings should be reserved for stargazing – simply choose a spot on the huge lawn and enjoy.

Our favourite feature is the garden, where there’s a scenic swimming pool and picturesque patio, complete with a hammock for leisurely lounging. There’s a barbecue and space for al fresco meals too, all overlooking the loveliness of the local landscape. Inside, the rooms are cosy and characterful, including one that sleeps four and is ideal for young families. And when it’s time to head out and explore, you’ll be spoilt for choice. Will it be dinner and drinks in nearby Cetona, or a day trip to the UNESCO-listed Val d’Orcia? Whatever your plans, this is a perfect pad for seeing more of Tuscany.

Warm Sunlight

Close to the spa town San Casciano dei Bagni, this converted farmhouse surrounded by olive groves and cypress trees won us over immediately. You can completely immerse yourself in the Tuscan countryside here, with rolling hills serving as a picturesque background as you enjoy the pool and dine alfresco in the garden. While the style indoors won't be for everyone, the authentic wooden ceilings and exposed brickwork create a rustic atmosphere – speak to your host about hiring a chef and enjoy an authentic Italian dinner at home.

Enchanted Tuscan Retreat

Outdoor Fireplace / Firepit

Floor-to-ceiling black-framed windows and a sensitive renovation have turned this 16th-century Umbrian dovecote tower into one of the region's smartest stays. Behind the stone tower, the jagged cliffs and town of Orvieto loom, while in front, the rolling hills stretch before you. Interiors meld old with new. Flagstone floors and antique furniture sit alongside steel ceiling pipes and geometric prints. As one would expect in a tower, there are several spiralling staircases – as well as gawp-worthy views. Push open the sliding doors in the grey, country-style kitchen and step out onto the terrace. A built-in barbecue and wrought-iron table overlook the Italian countryside, while a large vegetable garden and fruit trees provide the freshest ingredients. Continue down to find 1.5 hectares of garden with Etruscan origin and the swimming pool, which was once an agricultural fountain. Forget about any form of work, now all you have to worry about is which spot to pick around the water, with the rush of the nearby brook providing background music.

On A Wing & Prayer

Secluded in the Tuscan countryside, this villa is surrounded by acres of unspoiled hills and scenery. But as alluring as the views are, there more to this charming stone home than just that. Fitness fiends will be happy to find a gym and private tennis court here to keep them active. There's also a hot tub and sauna for those who'd prefer a more leisurely approach to their holiday. Kids will love the sprawling garden and swimming pool, and the whole family can come together around the alfresco dining table to appreciate the beautiful views. Rome and Florence can be reached by high-speed rail, or drive to cities closer to home, like Orvieto.

You’ll find Umbria is a region where old Italian traditions shine on. We’re talking grandmothers making pasta by hand and folk using their feet to crush grapes for wine. Within hours you’ll be lost to the charm of this place, and this traditional stone villa is a part of the region’s allure. On the inside it’s simply furnished, reminiscent of old country life. You can almost see the aproned nonna bustling around the kitchen covered in flour, tending to the pasta machine, open hearth and charcuterie slicer. The living room gives a whole new meaning to the term ‘open-plan’ with brick archways connecting dining with both a grand lounge area and family snug with an old fireplace. With the windows thrown open, undulating views pour in and draw you outside to the terraces and swimming pool, and the golden hour is when this area really shines. Watch the sun go down, a glass of wine in hand, while the colours of the land change by the second.
