Breathe in the fresh mountain air and sink into one of the poolside sun loungers, where you could easily spend all day relaxing in the sun – a book in one hand and a glass of Sagrantino in the other – or jump in the car and make your way to Assisi or Spoleto to experience life in an Italian village. 

Back at home, modern furniture pairs with vintage design pieces to create a truly homely atmosphere, perfect for unwinding with family and friends. Stretch out on the comfy sofa in the sitting room or gather everyone into the kitchen to help you cook something delicious. After all, what’s a holiday in the Italian countryside without a tasty meal that's been lovingly prepared by all your favourite people?

Perugino's Guesthouse

In the folds of the hills, this home is all about those Tuscan sunsets. Catch the golden hour, as the sun dips below the forest-clad hills, from the terrace where curtains frame the view and dining by candlelight is a delight. Days can be spent drifting from one terrace lounge to another, or swimming laps in the pool – the sun hits the water throughout the day. There are two farmhouse-style kitchens to choose from – one is professional-grade in the basement of the main villa and the other, a smaller affair in the separate cottage. Guests can spread out between both buildings, each with its own living room, and join together for excursions to Cortona, 10 kilometres away.  

Rosemary Breeze

This enchanting villa is situated on an ancient private estate, guaranteeing tranquillity and natural beauty. You’ll be surrounded by acres of woodland and olive groves, while the town of Pierantonio is also just a fifteen-minute drive away. You’ll have a heated pool to enjoy, as well as a picturesque patio, perfect for outdoor feasts, which can be prepared by a private chef upon request. With a wide range of special services on offer, there's no doubt you’ll feel spoiled here. 

Hand of Fortune

Set within the serene Umbrian countryside, this home is perfectly positioned for a blissful rural retreat. Enjoy breathtaking views, slow swims and lazy afternoon drinks on the terrace. Two of the bedrooms are located in the independent annexe – perfect for those seeking a little extra privacy. You’ll also have access to a range of extra services during your stay – including massage treatments, a private chef and guided tours. You will need a car to get around here, but it’s just a short drive to Perugia and Assisi.


Enter the Light

Like something from a fairytale, this castle truly is one-of-a-kind, and there are few places we'd rather be nestled in a medieval castle than in Umbria, the very heart of Italy. With surprisingly bright, airy spaces, luxurious furnishings, and a sense of the utmost love and care that has gone into this home, it really is difficult not to fall utterly in love with this home. The host has managed to celebrate the castle's fourteenth-century heritage with its mix of modern and traditional interiors. On top of that, there's a huge kitchen and several alfresco dining options, making this a great choice for those that like to indulge in Italy's exquisite cuisine, while the private pool, play area, games room, and extensive grounds are sure to keep guests of any age entertained the whole way through.

For those looking for an adventure outdoors, head to the breathtaking city of Perugia, known for its chocolate and the way the city comes alive in the summer with festivals, music and theatre. If that isn't enough adventure, grab your hiking boots and sandwiches, and head on out into the Umbrian wilds, reconnecting with nature and Umbrian culture. The beauty of this home is its versatility. While guests are more than welcome to relax by the pool and soak up the Umbrian sun, they are also welcome to a myriad of walking trails, truffle and mushroom hunting, picnics in the meadow, strolls along ancient woodlands, etc. 

Tales Of A Castle

Tucked away on a private estate in the Umbrian countryside, this villa is perfect for those looking for peace and tranquillity. Inside, the place is steeped in history – the living area was once a chapel – and while some areas of the home may feel dated to some, we think they add a rustic charm. In the garden, you’ll find a private swimming pool and a patio for dining or sharing refreshments with your loved ones. When you’re ready to venture out, Pierantonio, the nearest town, is around 10 kilometres away.

Umbrian Eye

Greeted by the trickle of a baroque fountain and filled with the contrast of Umbrian sunlight against dark marble floors, gilded bannisters and ming vases, stepping into this villa is like entering a Renaissance painting. It’s the kind of home where the baths, beds and even the billiard table come with claw feet. Sparkling chandeliers illuminate oil paintings in the grand lounge and candelabra light the basement taverna, where there’s a vintage jukebox, chintzy sofas, rows upon rows of aged spirits and a long bar to serve them at. The chrome and steel kitchen is restaurant-standard, with a built-in tiled barbecue sticking to the region’s rustic food tradition. Hire a private chef to make the most of the local produce, and dine in the formal dining room amidst the antique dressers and portraits, or enjoy alfresco, under the portico in the garden. The book-lined study with its gilded desk is ideal for catching up on a bit of work, and you can put up that barrier between work and play with a steamy sauna session to unwind. Outside, you’ll find a lap-sized swimming pool and cement tennis court, both with changing areas. Lawn games and a wooden treehouse should keep little ones entertained for hours. Should you wish to venture beyond the grounds of this palatial villa, the ancient village of Corciano is nearby and it’s a 10-minute drive to the shores of Lake Trasimeno.  

Caravaggio's Masterpiece

The first thing that drew us to this beautiful villa in the Umbrian countryside was the plunge pool, suspended above the swimming pool with a waterfall cascading between the two. The whole thing creates a tiered terrace effect, which is perfect for a home perched on the hillside. From the pool, you can admire the forest-clad hills unfurling for miles before you. Below, the poolside terrace is home to myriad loungers, and there’s a second wrap-around terrace in the villa’s first floor, covered by a pergola and adorned with soft furnishings. A full outdoor kitchen in rose-pink can provide lavish alfresco feasts with its gas hob and rustic pizza oven. You’ll also find a huge lawn for football or tennis, or perhaps a game of boules, within the 10,000 square metres of tree-filled grounds.

Inside you’ll find all the classic features of a traditional Umbrian home – wood-beamed ceilings, terracotta tiled floors and a rustic-style kitchen that still has serious 19th-century farmhouse vibes. Each bedroom has its own character, with wrought-iron beds and hand-painted wardrobes harking back to yesteryear. We were keen on the sunflower room in olive and forest green, and the master with its four-poster swathed with curtains. But the room with the lion tapestry really grabbed us.

The Waterfall Effect

Just outside the hamlet of San Giovanni del Pantano, this rural farmhouse is a special place indeed. From the exquisite pool to the grand yet homely interiors and terrace with sweeping views over olive trees and mountains, this home invites you to be in the moment with your loved ones. Days here are made for lazing in hammocks, floating idly in the pool, preparing gnocchi with local nonnas, or hunting for wild asparagus in the woodlands. The view from the poolside terrace is simply stunning, with verdant hills cloaked in mist in the morning. Gather the whole group on one of the terracotta-paved patios for meals. The sunsets here have to be seen to be believed and, in the evening, we can’t think of anything more delightful than lighting the candles and gathering round the outdoor table for a starlit Italian feast.

It’s a world of traditional Umbrian farmhouse inside, with wooden ceilings and original fireplaces in sitting rooms (there are several to choose from). Vintage travelling trunks, wrought-iron bedsteads and terracotta-tiled floors all add to the old-world feel of this sprawling villa. 
 
If you can bear to leave your Italian idyll, pretty Perugia is twenty minutes away, and several excellent local vineyards are even closer.

Wild Olive

Built on the ruins of a mediaeval watchtower, this charming villa offers a true escape from it all. Inside, you’ll find a homely space, and the double bunkbed room is ideal for families. But, the outdoor space is the star of the show for us. A private heated pool, sun-drenched terraces, alfresco dining opportunities and far-reaching views – there’s so much to love here. If you can tear yourself away, hop in the car for a trip to Perugia, where cobbled streets and authentic Italian eateries await. 

Umbria Hideaway

The views at this Umbrian home are truly spectacular. The villa stands in vast private grounds just a ten-minute drive from the hilltop town of Montone, looking out over the hills and valleys of the Umbrian countryside. It’s a secluded retreat, but still within easy access to all that Umbria has to offer. The villa is rustic, with a simple and comfortable decor – expect cotto floors, beamed ceilings and exposed original stonework, plus a few antiques. The gardens have been designed to make the most of the wraparound views, so you’ll find many a terrace and quiet corner to enjoy. We love the fig tree by the pool – time your visit right and you can pick sun-warmed fruit straight from the tree for breakfast.
