It would be reasonable to expect somewhere in San Marco, right by the Grand Canal, to be pretty busy, with streams of tourists winding their way along the streets outside. We can’t stress how little that matches up to the reality of A Call For Quiet. It’s incredibly peaceful, and a wonderful atmosphere to return to after a long day of walking around the city.

It’s far from the main thoroughfares, the narrow alleyways that nevertheless carry tens of thousands of tourists to and from St. Mark’s Square every day. The hefty beams stand out, but every part of the design works perfectly together, and while it can only hold three people, Mario looks after a couple of other places in the building, so larger groups can look at potential combinations.

Outside there is a beautiful jasmine scented garden surrounded by ancient walls, part of which is private and just for you. 

Santa Croce is a central neighbourhood that still retains an authentically Venetian feel. It is not swarmed by tourists, but the top sites are still easily reachable. Stroll fifteen minutes to the Rialto Bridge, or peruse the international masterworks housed in the Baroque marble palace of the Ca' Pesaro gallery. You are a few minutes’ walk from the Riva de Biasio vaporetto stop, which takes you down the Grand Canal. After a day of exploring the city, head for wine and cicchetti at an ancient Venetian tavern on the waterfront, and then come home and relax with a book in the serenity of your garden, as the sun sets over the floating city.

This Venetian building holds charming decor with subtle antique-styled touches, as well as a view of the famous Basilica dei Frari and the canal. Enjoy a cup of coffee as you watch the gondolas pass by below, allowing you to simply observe the locale as you unwind or tuck into a hearty homecooked meal at the dining table by the large window. 

If you're fancying a light bite, the breakfast bar is a great spot to eat with your loved ones with a glass of wine. Snuggle up on the sofa to watch a movie on TV or put your feet up as you delve into a brand new book – the window in the living space gives ample natural daylight.

Head out for a short walk to get closer to the beautiful Basilica dei Frari, followed by an afternoon wandering the charming streets of Venice. You'll find plenty of relaxing cafes that serve up tasty baked goods, washed down with freshly brewed coffee, as well as delicious restaurants and sumptuous bars.

The slightly dated decor aside, this apartment makes for a great central base in Venice, with views of the Grand Canal and Santa Lucia train station handily just a bridge away. You’ve also got a plethora of nearby vaporetto (water bus) stops nearby to take you to St Mark’s Square, Rialto Bridge, Lido, or directly to the airport, making it perfect for those with a tightly packed itinerary. While its location is definitely a strong point, the home isn’t without its merits. The views are a plus, the parquet floors and arched windows add old-world charm, and we’re particularly smitten with the tiled en-suite bathroom with its swish rainfall shower. 


The Red Doge

Set in a serene spot near the Convent of the Eremite, this Venetian apartment drops you in a prime position for exploring the city. Peaceful yet close to many restaurants, shops, and attractions such as the Ca' Rezzonico Museum of 18th Century Art, you won’t find yourself lost for things to do here. You’ll need to climb the stairs to the first floor to access this fuss-free home, so it may not be the right fit for those with mobility issues. But peek out of the windows at the canal views and you’ll find the climb worth it.

Lovely Venice

Sitting on the other side of the Grand Canal directly opposite Venezia Santa Lucia, this is a superb starting point from which to explore this unique city. More than that, however, it's an excellent home in its own right, too.

A little more contemporary than many other dwellings you'll find nearby, there's still a taste of tradition in the antique furnishings, the wooden doors that line the main living space and the prettily tiled terrace that lies on the other side. Otherwise, the design is fairly minimalist, with stark white walls and parquet flooring, plus a sleek kitchen that may be a little basic, but will more than suffice for modest meals.

Of course, if cooking isn't on the agenda, there's a good selection of restaurants and bars in the nearby Santa Croce neighbourhood that will keep you fuelled up. Many of the must-see attractions – including the Santa Maria cathedral and the Ca' Pesaro International Gallery of Modern Art – are easily reachable on foot, too.
