In the 19th century, Cascais grew into a glamorous spot for a getaway favoured by European royalty and aristocracy. It was during this era that this remarkable home was constructed, although it has recently been treated to a renovation by architect Manuel Aires Mateus. The end result is a home that mixes the allure of yesteryear with some wonderfully contemporary flourishes. 

Given that the smell of sea salt hangs heavy in the air around these parts, it only makes sense to start with the home's outdoor space. The heated swimming pool is sure to be the hangout of choice during the summer months, although there's also a large terrace with a barbecue, fire pit and alfresco dining table, too. If it's views of the Atlantic Ocean you're after, there are balconies on the upper floor that give you just that.

Inside, many grand architectural features remain, like the high ceilings and opulent archways, but the stark white walls, ultra-modern bathrooms and exercise room complete with a Peloton bike bring it firmly into the 21st century.

When you fancy a day on the beach, you really don't have far to go — a private path leads directly down to Praia da Azarujinha. There are plenty more to be discovered along this stretch of coastline, while the historic centre of Cascais takes all of forty minutes to reach on foot.

History buffs will enjoy seeing the Roman ruins at Cetobriga, while golfers might choose to stay closer to home – Troia Golf is a five-minute drive from the villa. It's pretty clear what was at the top of the list for the architect that designed this intriguing home in Comporta – natural light and lots of it. Enormous walls of glass line the sides of the home and the dazzlingly white interior design only accentuates this plentiful natural asset. These huge windows also have the added benefit of looking out to peaceful views of local rice fields, too.

As you can probably begin to tell, it's a rather relaxing address. There are lots of spots in the tropical garden in which to appreciate the local tranquillity, whether on the back of a lounger or while dining alfresco on the table. Whenever the temperature takes a dip, you can head back inside and cosy up next to the contemporary fireplace in the lounge.

When it comes to seeing a little more of the locale, there are vast swathes of golden beaches covering the Portuguese coastline that start from as close as 1.5km away, while the nearest town is only 2km away for when you're in need of restaurants and shops.

This modern home close to Portugal’s western coast is a great place for families or groups of friends. If we were to tell you of a hideaway that sits in the middle of twelve hectares of lush pine forest in rural Comporta, you might imagine a certain type of home and we're willing to wager that it doesn't look anything like this wonderfully modern residence.

Not only does the boxy white exterior look visually striking from the outside, but this sense of awe will continue as you step through the glass doors. Our favourite space is the double-height living, which is flooded with natural light from the copious number of windows that line the walls. However, the modern brown kitchen and equally glossy bathrooms are sure to take your breath away, as well. The design throughout feels cohesive, united by a preference for clean lines, sleek surfaces and chic minimalism.

Given the agreeable climate that this corner of the Iberian peninsula enjoys, you'll likely want to spend as many hours outdoors as possible and that's easy to do here. The long infinity swimming pool is both wonderfully refreshing when the midday sun is at its highest and made all the more relaxing by the heady scent of fragrant herbs and vegetation that grow around the sides. There are plenty of terraces and balconies on which to take a seat and do nothing more strenuous than soak up the rays, but you can also find a tennis court if you fancy a match or two.

Although there's a strong sense of tranquillity from the isolated position, you don't have to venture far to find the Portuguese coastline. Carvalhal and Pego beaches can be reached in ten minutes or so in the car, and there are a few restaurants and bars to be found close to these seaside spots.
