We love this bitesize apartment in the heart of Funchal and think it provides a great base for discovering all of the very best that this unique island has to offer. After a big stretch staring out at the bobbing waves, pour yourself a cup of coffee and soak it all up amid the fresh air on the balcony.

The modern interiors nod to the natural environment – think neutral hues and tasteful touches of blue. Meanwhile, minimal designs create a laid-back, serene ambience that makes switching off and chilling out all the easier.

Set in the city's former School of Fine Art, there's some serious design wizardry at play here.
