On your way to the beach, just 2km away, crawl into the local restaurant for a spot of lunch. Comporta's coastlines are picturesque, perfect for lounging in the sand and catching the rays. If we were to tell you of a hideaway that sits in the middle of twelve hectares of lush pine forest in rural Comporta, you might imagine a certain type of home and we're willing to wager that it doesn't look anything like this wonderfully modern residence.

Not only does the boxy white exterior look visually striking from the outside, but this sense of awe will continue as you step through the glass doors. Our favourite space is the double-height living, which is flooded with natural light from the copious number of windows that line the walls. However, the modern brown kitchen and equally glossy bathrooms are sure to take your breath away, as well. The design throughout feels cohesive, united by a preference for clean lines, sleek surfaces and chic minimalism.

Given the agreeable climate that this corner of the Iberian peninsula enjoys, you'll likely want to spend as many hours outdoors as possible and that's easy to do here. The long infinity swimming pool is both wonderfully refreshing when the midday sun is at its highest and made all the more relaxing by the heady scent of fragrant herbs and vegetation that grow around the sides. There are plenty of terraces and balconies on which to take a seat and do nothing more strenuous than soak up the rays, but you can also find a tennis court if you fancy a match or two.

Although there's a strong sense of tranquillity from the isolated position, you don't have to venture far to find the Portuguese coastline. Carvalhal and Pego beaches can be reached in ten minutes or so in the car, and there are a few restaurants and bars to be found close to these seaside spots.

Promising natural views over the rice paddies, sunbathing poolside couldn't be more scenic. We think the wooden pergola is the perfect place to sneak off to after an alfresco breakfast, carrying a local newspaper and a cup of Portuguese galão. Perhaps you'll brush past the mature trees after meeting your private chef and plan an excursion in the dappled light. Alternatively, in chillier months, just imagine gathering around the cosy fireplace. Beneath exposed wood beams in the characterful living space, you'll be certain to reconnect with your loved ones.

This villa boasts simplicity and comfort, ideal for those looking for an escape from the busy city. The closest restaurant is within walking distance and the beach is a short drive away, making this home suited to exploring Comporta as well as Lisbon, around an hour's drive away. We recommend having a car here, though you can also rent bikes to explore the nearby area. The garden and pool are great for catching some Portuguese rays, while the sun loungers, outdoor shower and alfresco dining space add to the holiday relaxation.

With Carvalhal Beach just minutes away, we think extended families or friend groups will have a blast at this gorgeous villa. Made up of two buildings, outside you'll find a well-equipped terrace and a private heated pool, while the multiple living rooms and en-suite for every bedroom ensure that large groups will be comfortable even indoors. As well as the golden coastline, you'll find an array of upscale beachfront clubs and eateries easily reachable on foot. You'll probably want a car for getting up to Comporta or Grândola, but your host can help you rent bikes or an off-road buggy for exploring the immediate surroundings.
