We tested this home in the winter, so the outside spaces don't look as appealing as they will in the summer, but the building itself hides the remains of a Roman settlement, so you'll be living and breathing history.

It's next to the Sé de Lisboa cathedral, so you won't have to walk far to see your first attraction. You're also no more than a five-minute walk to Baixa – the historical and geographical heart of the city – where you'll discover magnificent plazas, grand avenues and impressive Pombaline architecture. A timeless, rustic home with original azulejo tilework, antique wood-panelled walls, a standalone bath, and two reading nooks in the living room. There's hardly a corner in this home that couldn't feature in an interiors magazine as a prime example of rustic chic. The classical decor immediately had us in the mood to seek out another must-see/hear Lisbon experience, fado. You've got a few choices within a ten-minute walk, but the elegant Casa da Linhares stood out to us. Where better to listen to this mysterious and melancholic music while you dine on typically Portuguese dishes than in the foundation of an earthquake-ruined palace?

Furnished with comfort and functionality in mind, this clutter-free apartment is finished in warm, earthy tones that feel like home. Start your mornings among the plump cushions on the sofa with a milky coffee as your brood sets the breakfast table. After filling up on traditional Portuguese pastries, step out of your building and onto Praça dos Restauradores, one of the centre’s four grand squares – you’ll be struck by just how quiet your place is despite its bustling location. Turn left and stroll no more than five minutes into the heart of downtown. You’ll find endless boutiques, brunch spots and coffee houses plus the famous Santa Justa elevator and Carmo Convent. Continue walking for ten minutes to reach the picturesque river Tagus or take the historic 28E tram route from Praça Martim Moniz and trundle uphill to São Jorge castle. In the evening, just before sunset, head back to your pad and share a bottle of wine on your spacious private terrace – a real rarity in central Lisbon.

Whether you're travelling on business or for pleasure, you won't get much more central than this apartment. There's potential for noise here, so it's worth packing earplugs. The home isn't the most unique or stylish space, however, for solo travellers or couples looking for a practical base, this is the perfect fit. It's bright and modern, with a laptop-friendly desk for those working remotely or wanting to map out their Lisbon adventures. Location-wise, you're a short stroll from many of the must-see sights and cultural hotspots, including the Praça do Comércio, Sé de Lisboa, and Castelo de S. Jorge.

Here, you'll find plenty of boutiques, bars and restaurants, and the Praça dos Restauradores is nearby, too. We love this home's small balcony with its views over the area's rooftops. And while the kitchen is compact, there's everything you need to make some Portuguese cuisine. One thing we must mention, though, is two people will be sleeping on a sofa bed in the living room at full capacity.

Cosy and charming, this studio apartment may be compact, but it certainly is comfortable. You'll find it in a historic building that was once owned by the Menezes family, and this heritage is evident with an exposed stone wall and a quaint Juliet balcony overlooking the street and offering a partial view of the Tagus. We love how the combined living/sleeping space is bathed in Portuguese sunlight – our only quibble is the kitchen, which is quite tiny. That said, it gets the job done for breakfasts and light bites, and besides, Lisbon is home to some truly fantastic eateries and delicious local cuisine – we doubt you'll get up to much cooking, anyway.

As for discovering these top-notch eateries, you won't have to travel far. This is one of the most authentic districts in Lisbon, where restaurants are tucked away down steep, cobbled alleyways and cafes flank the bustling squares. You're right in the centre, too, just a seventeen-minute stroll from Praça do Comércio – as far as locales go, you can't really beat it. And, if your feet need a break from all the walking, a handy metro station is also nearby – win, win.

Located in Mouraria, the mediaeval neighbourhood best characterised by the sounds of fado, you'll be within walking distance to all central sights.

We love the bright red tiles in the kitchen and the bedroom’s soothing neutral palette that invites a serene night’s sleep. You’ll relish taking relaxing soaks under the bathroom’s rainfall shower, especially after a day of walking up and down Lisbon’s iconic hills. Speaking of exploring, you’ve within easy reach of the city’s main sights on foot – the Alfama district, São Jorge Castle, the Carmo Convent and the Santa Justa Lift are just a twenty-minute walk away while the Praça do Comércio is a twenty-five-minute stroll from your door.

Location-wise, it's hard to get more authentically Lisbon than the hilltop district of Graça. While the tourists might be wandering the winding streets of next-door neighbour Alfama, for those in the know, Graça is where it's at. This charming apartment is located in a particularly picturesque part of this lovely neighbourhood, with views of the city’s seven hills and iconic red roofs. The vista inspires the lively colour palette that we find inside this two-bedroom home. We love how the home maximises the available space with vibrant energy and cosy corners that make the most of every square foot. Granted, it’s on the fourth floor with no lift, but after a few days of training on Lisbon's hilly streets, you'll be at the top before you know it. Back down at street level, you'll find a quaint family-run cafe that's perfect for breakfast, while there's a bar next to the nearby church that's one of the best spots in the city for a scenic sunset. Most of the city's main sights are within a twenty-minute walk, and there are good transport links to take you back up the hill to your home at the end of a long day of exploring.

If you wander through the winding streets of the Mouraria neighbourhood, you might come across this traditional apartment building, clad in delicately patterned tiles. You might expect that the inside will be similarly traditional, but this flat is sleek and modern, inspired by Scandi-style minimalism rather than the typical Portuguese design. In spite of being closer to an apart-hotel than a private residence, we liked having the friendly concierge team on-hand offer a variety of services – from massages to tour guides they have the best contacts in town. And, while it's still disputed whether fado was born in Mouraria or the Alfama area, one thing is for certain – the streets that surround this apartment are full of fado houses and monuments to the music. Grab a glass of port, sit back, and be transported back hundreds of years by these haunting melodies.

The streets around Lioz Triptych are full of fado houses and photo opportunities to capture the remainders of medieval architecture in Lisbon. Mouraria is becoming more and more popular with tourists, so more cafes and restaurants are opening too – in short, this neighbourhood will keep you busy. In stark contrast to the area around it, Lioz Triptych is sleek, modern, and made with high-quality modern materials. It's closer to an aparthotel than a characterful home, but we liked the friendly concierge team who offer a variety of on-demand services.

The cosy desk in the living room provides the ideal working spot for a productive afternoon. We recommend setting up there if you want to try your hand as a digital nomad or simply catch up on some emails whilst you're away. The welcoming balcony also provides an idyllic location if you want to enjoy the warmth of the day whilst you work.

This laid-back home in Chiado is perfect for those looking to be in the heart of Lisbon’s action. Surrounded by some of the city’s best sights, this unpresumptuous home allows its open spaces and huge windows do the talking, with a minimalist design aesthetic that feels as chic as it does calm. We love the living room’s tall corniced ceilings and the large shuttered windows that make the whole space feel bright. The kitchen, too, is a masterclass in elegant simplicity, concentrating on natural textures – a marble countertop and hardwood floors – and featuring a long table that just begs to be gathered around for morning and evening feasts. The two pared-back bedrooms complete the home, along with an azulejo adorned bathroom that gives the apartment a touch of Portuguese traditionalism. Away from the apartment, you’re just a seven-minute walk from the bustling Time Out food market, a fifteen-minute walk from Praça do Comércio and a twenty-five-minute stroll from São Jorge Castle. Bairro Alto is also right around the corner, five minutes away, with its bohemian cobbled streets packed with hip boutiques, quirky bars and intimate fado bars.

This beautifully bright apartment between Lisbon's Chiado and Alfama neighbourhoods has it all – a great location and a blend of modern styling and character features. Summing up this historic part of Lisbon perfectly, it's in a typical Pombalina building – freshly renovated with impeccable attention to detail. If local period architecture is of interest to you, you'll love the high, ornately decorated ceilings, the tall windows and the traditional narrow balcony with wrought iron railings. And it's not too hard to spot the building's defining feature – the Pombalina wooden cage built in to strengthen the stone buildings after the great earthquake of the 1750s. Bright and smartly designed, this charming home has been reimagined for the 21st century, with a cool black kitchen, mid-century modern furniture and tasteful wall art. Comfortable and welcoming, you'll spend your mornings sipping coffee, watching the street come to life from your balcony. Bigode Chique

Situated in the charming area of Graça, this luminous flat is a cosy retreat in one of Lisbon's most authentic neighbourhoods. The sun-kissed private terrace is our favourite spot. Begin the morning out there with a strong cup of coffee and pasteis de nata in the fresh air – your host can also arrange breakfast – and close the day with a glass of Vinho Verde come nightfall. You'll also have access to a communal garden, which is perfect for picnics in the late-afternoon sunshine. Inside, the sleek design is complemented by brilliant pops of red. Sprawl out on the sofa for a post-sightseeing catnap or gather around the table for a typical Portuguese dinner. 

Another thing we adore is the location. You're a bit further away from the hustle and bustle in the city centre, but with the famous 28 Tram a short walk away, you won't have to travel far to see the sights. Here, narrow streets are flanked by local restaurants, bakeries and open-air cafes, all serving up delectable regional dishes. Make sure to take in the panoramic views from the hilltop observation points – our favourite is Miradouro da Senhora do Monte, easily reached on foot. Or, explore in style and ask your host to arrange river cruises, helicopter tours and other experiences.

Vermilion at Dusk

Sitting just a three-minute walk from lively Pink Street and a stone’s throw from the Douro River, this design-focused apartment offers a stylish stay in Lisbon’s cultural and historic heart. 
 
It’s hard to choose our favourite feature here – from the living room’s curved bubble sofa to the leaf-print walls and the grand dining table with its jewel-tone velvet seats, there’s an air of modern sophistication here that reflects the city’s eclecticism. Ample natural light pours in through the living area’s arched French doors that give way to pretty Juliet balconies with views of the street below. Perch here with your evening glass of Portuguese wine when you’re not out sampling Pink Street’s famous nightlife, and end the night with a deliciously comfortable sleep in the blue and green bedrooms. Factor in the pair of bathrooms with their relaxing rainfall showers, and you’ve got everything you need for a blissful stay. 
 
When it comes to sightseeing, discover Pink Street’s many bars and eateries nearby, or make a beeline for Praça do Comércio, a ten-minute walk away. You’re also a six-minute stroll from the popular Time Out Market, a ten-minute walk from the Santa Justa Lift, and the Alfama district is twenty minutes away on foot. With the iconic Tram 28 passing by just 100 metres from your door too, the city is yours for the taking. 


Pink Echoes

Ideally located in the heart of Lisbon, a short walk from landmarks like Praça do Comércio and the Sé, not to mention mere footsteps from excellent restaurants, this apartment couldn’t be better placed. Thanks to the flexible sleeping arrangements in the second bedroom, this home suits all travelling types. And the fully-equipped kitchen suits those wanting to stay for a longer period. Though if you’d prefer not to cook, your host can provide breakfast deliveries and private chefs as an optional extra.

Meu Sonho

In the heart of Lisbon’s historic centre, this apartment is a five-minute walk to the waterside Praça do Comércio lined with shops and restaurants on the River Tagus. Winding, cobbled streets packed with bars and restaurants lead from the apartment to Castelo de S. Jorge on the hilltop, a ten-minute walk away. True to its historic surroundings, this home retains some original features of the traditional Pombaline building it’s housed in. A wooden frame from the post-earthquake reconstruction of 1755 juts out into the living room. Bold black and gold artwork has been hand-picked to complement the wooden structure. Waking up in the master bedroom is a real treat as sunlight streams through French windows, which can be opened up to create a Juliet balcony. 

Pombaline Dream

Down by Lisbon’s waterfront, this apartment is surrounded by chi chi little bars, trendy eateries and all the beguiling attractions of the city centre. Walk less than ten minutes to reach the narrow, bar-stuffed streets of Bairro Alto, or make the eight-minute stroll to the dramatic ruins of Carmo Convent.

Returning to this apartment, you’re met with a vintage-chic interior. Art Nouveau rugs, an azulejo-tiled wall feature and tropical-fern-clad sofas feel as though the host has dipped into the vintage markets to decorate this place.
