We tested this home in the winter, so the outside spaces don't look as appealing as they will in the summer, but the building itself hides the remains of a Roman settlement, so you'll be living and breathing history.

The building that homes Lioz Marble looks like a typical azulejo-paved townhouse, but the moment you enter, it's a new world. This home is minimalist, ultra-modern, and maximizes the assets of this compact space.  We liked the array of extra services provided by the friendly host team, such as breakfast and on-demand cleaning. Located in Mouraria, the mediaeval neighbourhood best characterised by the sounds of fado, you'll be within walking distance to all central sights.

If you like a spot of shopping followed by lunch (who doesn't?), then this home near Avenida da Liberdade, Lisbon's answer to the Champs Élysées, is within walking distance. Here, you'll find plenty of boutiques, bars and restaurants, and the Praça dos Restauradores is nearby, too. We love this home's small balcony with its views over the area's rooftops. And while the kitchen is compact, there's everything you need to make some Portuguese cuisine. One thing we must mention, though, is two people will be sleeping on a sofa bed in the living room at full capacity.

Location-wise, it's hard to get more authentically Lisbon than the hilltop district of Graça. While the tourists might be wandering the winding streets of next-door neighbour Alfama, for those in the know, Graça is where it's at. This charming apartment is located in a particularly picturesque part of this lovely neighbourhood, with views of the city’s seven hills and iconic red roofs. The vista inspires the lively colour palette that we find inside this two-bedroom home. We love how the home maximises the available space with vibrant energy and cosy corners that make the most of every square foot. Granted, it’s on the fourth floor with no lift, but after a few days of training on Lisbon's hilly streets, you'll be at the top before you know it. Back down at street level, you'll find a quaint family-run cafe that's perfect for breakfast, while there's a bar next to the nearby church that's one of the best spots in the city for a scenic sunset. Most of the city's main sights are within a twenty-minute walk, and there are good transport links to take you back up the hill to your home at the end of a long day of exploring.

With its wood floors, contemporary decor and a large glass door that leads out onto a Juliet balcony, you can sip your morning coffee or evening glass of wine while taking in views of the neighbourhood's historic buildings. We love the bright red tiles in the kitchen and the bedroom’s soothing neutral palette that invites a serene night’s sleep. You’ll relish taking relaxing soaks under the bathroom’s rainfall shower, especially after a day of walking up and down Lisbon’s iconic hills. Speaking of exploring, you’ve within easy reach of the city’s main sights on foot – the Alfama district, São Jorge Castle, the Carmo Convent and the Santa Justa Lift are just a twenty-minute walk away while the Praça do Comércio is a twenty-five-minute stroll from your door.

If you’re looking for a central base, you can’t do much better than this little studio we spotted overlooking Rossio Square, one of the liveliest areas in the whole of Lisbon. Whether you’re here for the monuments, the architecture, or the world-class cuisine, this place has got you covered, situated within easy reach of the city’s most popular attractions. Start with a coffee in the main square then set off for a day of sightseeing, making sure to stop by Lisbon Cathedral to soak up stunning rooftop views of the Capital. 

When you’ve had your fill of being out and about, you’ll come home to your recently renovated apartment, where you’ll find all the essentials you’d expect from a nifty hotel alternative. Rustle up a Portuguese-inspired dish in the kitchenette, then pour yourself a glass of wine and tuck into your home-cooked feast as  you gaze out at the city’s rooftops. We don’t know about you, but we can’t think of a better way to unwind.

If you wander through the winding streets of the Mouraria neighbourhood, you might come across this traditional apartment building, clad in delicately patterned tiles. You might expect that the inside will be similarly traditional, but this flat is sleek and modern, inspired by Scandi-style minimalism rather than the typical Portuguese design. In spite of being closer to an apart-hotel than a private residence, we liked having the friendly concierge team on-hand offer a variety of services – from massages to tour guides they have the best contacts in town. And, while it's still disputed whether fado was born in Mouraria or the Alfama area, one thing is for certain – the streets that surround this apartment are full of fado houses and monuments to the music. Grab a glass of port, sit back, and be transported back hundreds of years by these haunting melodies.

Located on a quiet street in the authentically Portuguese Arroios neighbourhood, this sweet apartment is up in the eaves of a traditional building. Inside, it’s a contemporary space with white walls and minimal furnishings. Hardwood floors are topped with cotton rugs to add some colour and warmth to the home. In the mornings, enjoy the view from the windows with an espresso and famed custard tart, followed by a stroll around your locale. The Campo dos Mártires da Pátria gardens are sun-soaked and serene, interrupted only by the occasional calls of the ducks and chickens that make their home here. Old school cafes and hole-in-the-wall eateries line the streets while Avenida Almirante Reis, just a ten-minute walk away, is one of Lisbon’s main arteries, connecting you to the iconic Tagus river and downtown district.

Start your mornings among the plump cushions on the sofa with a milky coffee as your brood sets the breakfast table. After filling up on traditional Portuguese pastries, step out of your building and onto Praça dos Restauradores, one of the centre’s four grand squares – you’ll be struck by just how quiet your place is despite its bustling location. Turn left and stroll no more than five minutes into the heart of downtown. You’ll find endless boutiques, brunch spots and coffee houses plus the famous Santa Justa elevator and Carmo Convent. Continue walking for ten minutes to reach the picturesque river Tagus or take the historic 28E tram route from Praça Martim Moniz and trundle uphill to São Jorge castle. In the evening, just before sunset, head back to your pad and share a bottle of wine on your spacious private terrace – a real rarity in central Lisbon.

With unobstructed views of Alfama, Lisbon's charismatic medieval neighbourhood, this apartment will place you in the best location to explore the city's rich history. It's next to the Sé de Lisboa cathedral, so you won't have to walk far to see your first attraction. You're also no more than a five-minute walk to Baixa – the historical and geographical heart of the city – where you'll discover magnificent plazas, grand avenues and impressive Pombaline architecture. A timeless, rustic home with original azulejo tilework, antique wood-panelled walls, a standalone bath, and two reading nooks in the living room. There's hardly a corner in this home that couldn't feature in an interiors magazine as a prime example of rustic chic. The classical decor immediately had us in the mood to seek out another must-see/hear Lisbon experience, fado. You've got a few choices within a ten-minute walk, but the elegant Casa da Linhares stood out to us. Where better to listen to this mysterious and melancholic music while you dine on typically Portuguese dishes than in the foundation of an earthquake-ruined palace?

The cosy desk in the living room provides the ideal working spot for a productive afternoon. We recommend setting up there if you want to try your hand as a digital nomad or simply catch up on some emails whilst you're away. The welcoming balcony also provides an idyllic location if you want to enjoy the warmth of the day whilst you work.

Outside of the inviting rustic walls and neutral tones, Lisbon is a beguiling city that exudes charm on every corner. Luckily, you're located just next to its charismatic centre. 

Barrio Alta, one of the trendy suburbs brimming with attractions, is just a seventeen minute walk away. If you stroll just a little bit further, you reach the glistening promenade that's one of the myriad of highlights of Portugal's captivating capital.

Mouraria is becoming more and more popular with tourists, so more cafes and restaurants are opening too – in short, this neighbourhood will keep you busy. In stark contrast to the area around it, Lioz Triptych is sleek, modern, and made with high-quality modern materials. It's closer to an aparthotel than a characterful home, but we liked the friendly concierge team who offer a variety of on-demand services.

Carefully curated, this laidback apartment is brimming with charm. There’s a focus on natural textures – think wood, wicker and linen – with a cool blue, grey and white colour palette. Spend mornings relaxing in the light-filled living space – find the comfiest spot on the couch or take a seat at the dining table with a pastel de nata and a bica (espresso). Open the French doors and step onto the patio for views of terracotta rooftops and that famous Iberian sunshine. And if that wasn’t peaceful enough, your principal bedroom overlooks the Jardim do Torel – it’s often referred to as Lisbon’s hidden garden by the locals. Step out of your building and you’ll find yourself right on the edge of Praça dos Restauradores, one of the city’s most bustling squares. It joins up with the leafy Avenida de Liberdade and places you a fifteen-minute walk from the upscale Príncipe Real neighbourhood – one of our favourite bairros for food and drink.

Cosy and charming, this studio apartment may be compact, but it certainly is comfortable. You'll find it in a historic building that was once owned by the Menezes family, and this heritage is evident with an exposed stone wall and a quaint Juliet balcony overlooking the street and offering a partial view of the Tagus. We love how the combined living/sleeping space is bathed in Portuguese sunlight – our only quibble is the kitchen, which is quite tiny. That said, it gets the job done for breakfasts and light bites, and besides, Lisbon is home to some truly fantastic eateries and delicious local cuisine – we doubt you'll get up to much cooking, anyway.

As for discovering these top-notch eateries, you won't have to travel far. This is one of the most authentic districts in Lisbon, where restaurants are tucked away down steep, cobbled alleyways and cafes flank the bustling squares. You're right in the centre, too, just a seventeen-minute stroll from Praça do Comércio – as far as locales go, you can't really beat it. And, if your feet need a break from all the walking, a handy metro station is also nearby – win, win.

Enjoy an espresso and a pastry at the cosy breakfast nook before taking to Lisbon’s cobbled streets—catch the unmistakable 28 tram from nearby Martim Moniz if you don’t fancy climbing the hills. The lively Largo do Intendente square is a five-minute walk east where cafes and bars serve coffee and beer into the small hours. Your nearest Metro station is closer still and will take you to downtown in just seven minutes. Intendente is a cosmopolitan neighbourhood home to Ramiro, which is rumoured to be the best marisqueira in town should you be on the lookout for freshly caught seafood. But there are other perks to this neighbourhood too – you’ll find mom and pop food shops, great markets and good accessibility to Chiado and Alfama, which can be easily reached on foot in twenty minutes or quicker by public transit. The apartment itself is pleasant and comfortable, with a plush sofa, a balcony that overlooks the charming street and a quiet bedroom. The red tile in the kitchen and bathrooms brighten up the home and match its quirky personality, as do the patchwork throws and fabric wall hangings. Tucked away on a residential street in Alfama, this home is a triple threat of charm, location, and views. This is a cosy haven with a simple design aesthetic that focuses on functionality and comfort – but we really liked the French doors and the hardwood steps that take you up to the attic bedroom. We were torn between the quaint communal terrace at the back and the spectacular river views from the living room. In the end, we decided to split our time between the two. Want to discover the real Lisbon? Slip on your most comfortable trainers and get lost in the charming labyrinthine streets of Alfama. If you want to save your legs, two of the city's most iconic tram routes pass within five minutes of your hillside home. Music lovers should head to the Museu do Fado, a three-minute walk, while history buffs will enjoy the impressive Castelo de São Jorge and Sé de Lisboa, both ten minutes away.

Thanks to its central location in Lisbon's bohemian Bairro Alto, this apartment is the perfect base to explore the Portuguese capital. Walk the winding streets of this neighbourhood to immerse yourself in the culture and architecture of Lisbon. When the hills get a bit too much, you can always hop onto one of the iconic trams as they weave their way through the city. You're four minutes' walk from the breathtaking city views of Miradouro de São Pedro, a six-minute walk from the opulent interior of the Church of Sao Roque, and six minutes from the mournful sounds of fado that accompany dinner at legendary Lisbon restaurant, Adega Machado. At the end of a day of exploring, retreat to your sleek and modern home, where traditional features harmoniously coexist with minimalist modern furniture – it's a stark contrast to the art-daubed cobbled streets below. We love the natural light and the roomy bedrooms, which make getting up in the morning an absolute pleasure.

Rooftop Terrace

Like its lovely downstairs neighbour, Quarta Bicicleta is one of the nicest homes in this part of Alfama – and trust us, we've seen many. The location at the foot of the São Jorge Castle will make sightseeing effortless, and the terrace has some pretty sweet views of the river too. With a coherent modern design and high quality furniture, the only thing we can really fault this home for are the slanting ceilings (if you're tall), and the wall art might not be to everyone's taste. 

Quarta Bicicleta

In the heart of Lisbon’s historic centre, this apartment is a five-minute walk to the waterside Praça do Comércio lined with shops and restaurants on the River Tagus. Winding, cobbled streets packed with bars and restaurants lead from the apartment to Castelo de S. Jorge on the hilltop, a ten-minute walk away. True to its historic surroundings, this home retains some original features of the traditional Pombaline building it’s housed in. A wooden frame from the post-earthquake reconstruction of 1755 juts out into the living room. Bold black and gold artwork has been hand-picked to complement the wooden structure. Waking up in the master bedroom is a real treat as sunlight streams through French windows, which can be opened up to create a Juliet balcony. 

Pombaline Dream

Wonderfully bright and designed with a keen eye for detail, this beautiful apartment in Lisbon’s scenic Mouraria neighbourhood is the ideal base for those wanting to be within easy walking distance of the city’s best sights. Inside, wood floors and a calm blue palette create a cool harmony in each part of the open-plan living space. From the bathroom’s pretty tiles to the mezzanine bedroom’s wall and ceiling, there’s a Mediterranean vibe here in the sky-coloured hues that feel as laid-back as it does chic. We love the French doors that open out onto a Juliet balcony – ideal for perching with your morning coffee while admiring your street’s azulejo-clad buildings. We’re big fans, too, of the nods to Portuguese traditions, like the cork around the bathroom’s sink and the kitchen’s blue and white tiles. Outside of your home, you're just a thirteen-minute walk from the Alfama and its São Jorge Castle, the Santa Justa Lift is a fifteen-minute walk and Praça do Comércio is a twenty-minute stroll from your home. With countless restaurants, shops and some of the city’s oldest fado bars in your neighbourhood too, you’re all set to soak up the city’s culture, food and history in style. 


The Azure Mezzanine

There's more to Alfama than exploring medieval architecture and its fado legacy. Its maze-like streets are a joy to get lost in, and the nearby waterfront is a popular nightlife spot, so make sure to pack a pair of shoes for every occasion. This apartment stands out for its minimalist modern design in this historic area. There's a lot of space for you to enjoy, filled only by a few select pieces of furniture, which sets you up for a relaxing stay without lots of clutter around. There's a bedroom balcony, which isn't huge, but it does offer a brilliant view of the Sé Cathedral – which offers a taste of what the city has in store. So, lace up your trainers and set out to explore the city's seven hills. You're only a few minutes from the impressive Praça do Comércio and the grid-like shopping streets of downtown Baixa. If you fancy exploring further afield, then you're close to the Sé stop of the iconic 28 tram.

The Creative State

Situated in the charming area of Graça, this luminous flat is a cosy retreat in one of Lisbon's most authentic neighbourhoods. The sun-kissed private terrace is our favourite spot. Begin the morning out there with a strong cup of coffee and pasteis de nata in the fresh air – your host can also arrange breakfast – and close the day with a glass of Vinho Verde come nightfall. You'll also have access to a communal garden, which is perfect for picnics in the late-afternoon sunshine. Inside, the sleek design is complemented by brilliant pops of red. Sprawl out on the sofa for a post-sightseeing catnap or gather around the table for a typical Portuguese dinner. 

Another thing we adore is the location. You're a bit further away from the hustle and bustle in the city centre, but with the famous 28 Tram a short walk away, you won't have to travel far to see the sights. Here, narrow streets are flanked by local restaurants, bakeries and open-air cafes, all serving up delectable regional dishes. Make sure to take in the panoramic views from the hilltop observation points – our favourite is Miradouro da Senhora do Monte, easily reached on foot. Or, explore in style and ask your host to arrange river cruises, helicopter tours and other experiences.

If you're quite particular about location, then this apartment is the place for you. Situated inside a period building on Rua de Santa Justa, you'll be able to spot Arco da Rua Augusta from the living room, and walk to Elevador de Santa Justa in just one minute – it doesn't get much more convenient than that. Beautifully restored and filled with light, this home is as stylish as it is comfortable. We especially loved the kitchen's bright yellow tiles, where you can prepare a delicious meal using fresh ingredients to share at the sleek glass table. There's also a desk for catching up on work, and a plush sofa where you can put your feet up and enjoy some Portuguese wine – but with so much to do right on your doorstep, we think you'll hardly find the time.
