Fado-chic might be the best way to describe this home. Surrounded by artsy cafes and fado houses, Amália's interior contains several references to Portugal's musical soul. Like many older buildings in Lisbon, it doesn't have the biggest windows, so you might find yourself spending a lot of time on the closed balcony – or one of the many green spaces around Principe Real, where you can snap some of the best photos of the city.

The streets between Jardim do Princípe Real and Avenida da Liberdade are far from touristy – the houses are populated with real Lisbon residents, who go about the business between small shops and cafes. Rainy Night is located inside a typical Portuguese townhouse, albeit one that looks a bit more scruffy on the outside – unlike the apartment. The home has a lovely view and lots of natural light, with a simple, functional design that doesn't clutter. We particularly liked the French doors and the wooden headboard in the master bedroom.

Thanks to its central location in Lisbon's bohemian Bairro Alto, this apartment is the perfect base to explore the Portuguese capital. Walk the winding streets of this neighbourhood to immerse yourself in the culture and architecture of Lisbon. When the hills get a bit too much, you can always hop onto one of the iconic trams as they weave their way through the city. You're four minutes' walk from the breathtaking city views of Miradouro de São Pedro, a six-minute walk from the opulent interior of the Church of Sao Roque, and six minutes from the mournful sounds of fado that accompany dinner at legendary Lisbon restaurant, Adega Machado. The kitchen has everything you would need if you weren’t dining out in one of the gazillion acclaimed restaurants that Lisbon is famous for. We love the elevated touches in this home, like the HD projector you can plug your laptop into for film night on the mezzanine. Get your favourite tunes on the sound system for a summer soundtrack to pre-dinner drinks. Explore the city on your doorstep - potter around the nearby antique shops and independent boutiques. Pick up an iconic Portuguese custard tart on your way to the nearby subway station Baixa-Chiado and explore further afield. On the way up, you’ll also find cobbled streets full of restaurants, independent boutiques, and cafés. And as this bohemian area comes particularly alive after dark, this apartment is perfectly located just two minutes from the drinking and dining spots of bustling Rua da Rosa.

But unlike some of the pink streets nearby, the facade of this home is distinctly blue. In fact, this theme continues inside too. Blue floor tiles throughout the apartment are there to remind you of the azure waters of the River Tagus. Natural wicker furniture and woven rugs replicate the sandy shores of Portugal’s many gorgeous beaches. While the decor creates a calm and down-to-earth feel throughout this bright home, your host offers an altogether more luxury experience.

Just grab a bottle of wine (your host generously leaves one for you) and take your front-row seat to gorgeous sunsets over the rooftops. When you're in the mood to cook, the kitchen has everything you need – there's also a produce market held on Saturdays in the park nearby to stock up on fresh produce. Downstairs is relaxed and cosy, with pops of bright reds and a clean, contemporary living space that's an excellent place to hang out after a busy day. We think this apartment is a great match for a family or friend group that want a vibrant locale, excellent views and easy access to transport links.

The home itself is just as special, welcoming its guests with a light-filled, warm ambience and an abundance of unique art pieces and stylish furniture, creating an inviting, bohemian-themed feel. Kick back and relax in the open-plan living room, where you’ll be able to enjoy an evening of movies or listen to records and sip some wine in the company of your loved ones. If you don’t feel like heading out for dinner, you can just as easily rustle up delicious meals in the well-equipped kitchen and share them with the rest of the party at the dining table.

Tucked away inside a typical Lisbon townhouse, this cute and characterful space is a delightful surprise. With a wooden Pombaline frame that transforms the communal area into a library, this home is an excellent option for an avid reader – the outdoor balcony will win over the rest with gorgeous views of the nearby botanical garden. While most visitors flock to the likes of Alfama and Bairro Alto, this stunning apartment is located in the heart of Principe Real. Admittedly, it's further away from the historical city centre, but its pastel-coloured mansion apartments and wide boulevards provide it with a charm all of its own. You'll find the enchanting ten-acre Jardim Botânico de Lisboa and the lush Jardim do Príncipe Real within a five-minute walk. While your capable kitchen can handle anything you can throw at/over it, you're spoiled for choice when it comes to local eateries – it's a veritable foodie heaven. Choose to chow down at A Cevicheria, where you can indulge in a light and zesty menu of citrus-cured fish and mouth-puckering pisco sours. Alternatively, Atalho Real plates up melt-in-the-mouth meat in a relaxed environment. Once you've eaten your fill, there's a tempting choice of local bars where you can keep the party going – Pavilhão Chinês serves imaginative long drinks in an old grocery store packed with flea market finds and bric-a-brac. At the same time, cult favourite Foxtrot might be reminiscent of a good old British pub, but the creative cocktail menu promises so much more.

This home is well placed for Lisbon's fantastic markets – Mercado São Bento is under a ten-minute walk, while the Time Out Market Lisbon is a twenty-minute stroll. Principe Real, with its many designer stores, antique shops and art galleries, is under a twenty-minute amble. Or Bairro Alto is a sixteen-minute saunter where you'll find an array of fabulous restaurants and bars.

Back at this apartment, take in the street views from the balcony, then whip up a feijoada (bean stew) in the modern kitchen with fresh ingredients from the market. Totally refurbished, this home has been decorated in tasteful grey hues with splashes of pattern from the zebra-style rug, and verdant green plants give the place a homely vibe. This abode is perfect for a couple, solo traveller or business professional.

Beautifully decorated and centrally located, this Lisbon apartment has a lot to offer. It’s great for remote workers, with a dedicated office that’s separate from the living and sleeping areas. The well-equipped kitchen and cosy decor also make this a wonderful choice for a long-term stay – you can even bring your pet. The balcony is a lovely touch, too. The views are slightly blocked by a tree, but you can always take in the quintessential Lisbon street views from the living area’s Juliet balcony. In terms of location, Avenida Liberdade and its shops, restaurants, and cafes, is close to your base in Santo António, and a stroll through Parque Eduardo VII is a must.

It's impossible to talk about Evaristo's Cauldron without first mentioning the lovely host Susana, who lives in the same building and treats all guests as if they were old friends. Located in Principe Real, this home is close to all central attractions, but the immediate surroundings are fairly quiet. Even though this home is located in an old building, both the exterior and interior are impeccable. Evaristo's Cauldron preserves traditional Portuguese architectural features while ensuring that this home is comfortable, functional, and designed with a mixture of old and new chic.

Now, this is how you do city living in Lisbon, folks. Exquisitely designed throughout and boasting an all-too-rare suntrap terrace, who wouldn't be happy in a pad like this.

Sunny mornings call for freshly brewed coffees and Pastel de Natas out on the terrace. Or take things indoors to rustle up something heartier in the made-for-action kitchen area while others crash out in the sophisticated living space or spill out around the dining table –⁠ there's room for you all here.

Over in the bedrooms, the designers have kept the spaces pared-back and contemporary – with just those Portuguese ceramic floor tiles adding a pop of colour and beautifully mirroring the blue skies outside. We'll let you decide who lucks out on that king-size bedroom with en-suite and direct access to the pretty courtyard.

When it's time to explore, the Bairro Alto district is right at your feet. One of the city's most emblematic neighbourhoods, this place has got it all going on. By day, lose yourself to its tangle of lanes discovering old-school cafes for tasty tapas plates and quaint vintage shops. As dusk falls over the city, grab ginjinha cocktails from hole-in-the-wall bars. Then settle down in one of its late-night bistros for authentic tapas, as the Fado folk musicians strike up.

Barrio Alto’s vibrant array of restaurants, independent shops, cafés, and bars makes it one of Lisbon’s best spots for day and night. Set over a series of hills, the area might sometimes feel challenging to explore – but always worth it for a striking view. Or to make things a bit easier, you can admire the city from your own rooftop home, or the Santa Justa Lift, only eleven minutes away.

In this peaceful street, you’ll find traditional architecture and exteriors with famous Portuguese tiles and colourful facades. Your apartment building is covered in glazed blue tiles, matching beautifully with the clear blue skies. Inside, blue is a continual theme, but this time for flooring. Glide across these tiles as you admire modern, understated furniture in the living space, with woven and wicker elements completing this relaxed feel. And it’s all illuminated by sunlight streaming in through huge, sliding doors.

Follow the light to your private outdoor terrace, where you can sit every morning with your espresso alongside terracotta rooftops. But when the afternoon sun heats up, take shade under the parasol with a glass of douro in hand.

You can tell most of this furniture was selected with care – Pedro went all the way to Indonesia to achieve the fairytale glamour look of this home. Thanks to the exposed brickwork and vaulted ceilings, you can still see what this home looked like before the rustic transformation. The attention to detail in this home is excellent – hand-crafted bed frames and mirrors in unexpected colours help create a pleasant earthy atmosphere. Although The Fay Terrace is a small home, it has a large, traditionally paved terrace, perfect for afternoon lunches.

Just a stone’s throw from Avenida da Liberdade – Lisbon’s answer to the Champs-Élysées – this stylish apartment is a perfect reflection of its privileged, upscale locale. 
 
The living area stands out with its earthy tones and desert-inspired decor, inviting you to kick back and relax on the sofa with a glass of wine or gather around the dining table for homemade Portuguese feasts aplenty. 
 
The two bedrooms, meanwhile, are visions of boho elegance, with soft throws, comfortable beds and jungle-inspired colour schemes that beckon a blissful night’s sleep. Each has its own desk space too should you need to catch up on work and the bathroom just off of the living area is a luxurious marble space that beckons pampering under its rainfall shower. 
 
When it comes to things to see and do nearby, go shopping along Avenida da Liberdade (a two-minute walk) or take a ride on the Santa Justa Lift (a fourteen-minute walk). You’re also a ten-minute stroll from the Botanical Garden of Lisbon, while the historic Alfama district is twenty-five minutes away on foot.

It starts with the four-poster bed – the feeling that nothing in this home has been left to chance. The host has gone all the way to Indonesia in search of the perfect furniture to create the look of fairytale glamour that fits perfectly into this home. The lower floor of this home doesn't get a lot of natural light, but we liked its original features, such as the original beams in the ceiling and the stone-paved terrace, perfect for afternoon relaxation.

The host has made it their goal to create the epitome of fairytale glamour. His quest to find the best furniture for the job has taken him all the way to Indonesia, which is where most of the hand-carved pieces have come from – from the wood slice coffee table to the bedroom doors. This home doesn't get as much light as it deserves, but it's illuminated with well-placed lights in every room. The stone-paved terrace with a little pool is our favourite part of this home, perfect for late afternoon cocktails. 

Fay Basin

A mixture of rustic chic and fairytale glamour, this home is a peaceful oasis for those who want to avoid the hustle and bustle of central Lisbon but still stay within reach of the sights. Most of the furniture has been imported from Indonesia by the discerning hosts, and we think you'll love the intricate textures and soothing colour scheme. The patio, complete with a small plunge pool, is a quiet, sunny spot ideal for quick breakfasts and long, lazy lunches. You'll find Rato Metro stop just a minute's walk away, meaning it's easy to whizz into the centre of the city. The popular neighbourhood of Bairro Alto is just a ten-minute walk away too, with its famous steep streets and bohemian flair.

This home is a peaceful city oasis, perfect for those who want to escape the city noise. Furnished with a love for rustic elegance, it gives off a sense of fairytale glamour. Most of the furniture has been hand-picked and brought over from Indonesia by the host in search if the perfect textural patterns, giving this home a harmonious vibe in every room. While we loved the hand-carved details and the woodwork in the living room, our favourite is the traditionally paved terrace – perfect for lazy afternoon lunches.

We loved the views you get over the city’s rooftops – but take note, the view is earned by walking up a steep street. The apartment is comfortable and it’s in great condition, making it a lovely place to come back to after a long day of pounding the pavement.

Larousse is quite a particular home with a unique structure that's hard to find in Lisbon.  The modern minimalist furniture works well with the traditional bare bones of this typical townhouse, creating a pleasant communal area that includes a sociable kitchen. The second bedroom is located on the mezzanine and it isn't well separated from the communal area – it will only suit those who can get up the steep stairs and appreciate the open space. But you'll get to enjoy a great view and a location that will get you close to the sights and the best shops in town.

Back at this stylish apartment, take a seat on the comfy sofa and rest your feet after all that retail therapy or get some fresh air on the balcony. This place has everything you need for a comfortable stay –  we particularly love the vintage furniture scattered throughout the house, as well as the gorgeous marble-style bathrooms. With this home, you can really live like a Lisboeta.

Cassandra

Set on a typical cobbled street, full of restaurants and cafes, and close to the luxurious Avenida da Liberdade, this traditional home can be found in a historic building. Freshly renovated and flooded with natural light, it's a cheerful space that's perfectly located for those wanting to explore Lisbon like a local. The pine floor is bright and comforting, while the large, open-plan living space has several big windows and two sets of doors opening to a narrow balcony that overlooks Jardim do Torrel – perfect for an afternoon walk. The kitchen isn't huge but it's well-equipped and there's a pretty dining table for evenings in. An apartment on two levels, a modern staircase leads up to the bedrooms in the eaves (we love the big master bedroom). Just a few steps from probably the most desirable avenue in the city, it's easy to get around from here too – it runs from the heart of the city centre to the Marquês de Pombal square.

This sunny home is in a quiet residential area of Lisbon. It's perfect for those who want to relax after spending the day exploring the city. Within walking distance are small groceries, cafes, and the tram, which will quickly take you into the centre of town. The beautiful Jardim da Estrela is close by too – a garden where you can picnic beneath the shade of the trees in the summer. We'd recommend paying a visit to the Praça das Flores where you can buy drinks and pastries. Though when the weather is good, you might prefer simply spending time sipping a glass of wine on the balcony. It's the crowning jewel of this apartment, perfect for both your morning coffee and an evening nightcap under the stars.
