With everything right on your doorstep, you'll be living like a local with a city break at this top-floor apartment in Downtown Funchal. On the top floor of a historic building in the old part of town, it's set on a narrow street with shops, bars, and restaurants below – yet it's still surprisingly quiet at night. A good size for a couple or a small family, it has modern interiors, all-white walls, and pretty parquet flooring. The living space includes a small but well-equipped kitchen and a dining table, while the bedroom is behind a large set of pocket doors, meaning it can be closed off for privacy or remain open to create a more flexible space. But this home's crowning glory is definitely its spacious private terrace. With tables and chairs, it's the perfect spot for breakfast each morning or pre-dinner drinks in the evenings. Close by you'll find the famous farmers’ market (Mercado dos Lavradores), the historic centre of Funchal and the Cathedral, while Funchal Marina is within walking distance too.

It’s all about the location of this swish little apartment. You’re in the heart of Funchal, the pretty capital of Madeira where orange-roofed buildings cascade down to the sea. Within the picturesque streets of the old town surrounding this place, you’ve got bars and restaurants galore. A short walk away, the harbour is where boat tours leave to spot whales and dolphins, and sundowners can be enjoyed at the harbour-side bars. Those seeking relaxation by the sea can head to Barreirinha Beach, a twenty-minute walk away. 

The apartment itself is a light-filled spot with a view of the scenic old town. There’s a leather sofa for relaxing at the end of the day and a kitchenette should you want to take advantage of the nearby Mercado dos Lavradores farmer’s market. Sliding open the glass doors, you’ve got a slender Juliet balcony overlooking the rooftops of Funchal.

It's those show-stopping balcony views of Funchal's charming rooftops and glistening sea beyond taking all the glory at this luxurious apartment perched right in the heart of the city. But there's much to be admired inside this high-style bolthole too.

Set in the city's former School of Fine Art, there's some serious design wizardry at play here. While historic features nod to the building's grand past and bring the wow factor (that sweeping staircase and marble-clad foyer are a case in point), everywhere else is a masterstroke in modern living.

Free-flowing and light-filled, the space is cleverly zoned into living and sleeping spaces with a high-spec, marble-clad bathroom at its heart. Sunny mornings call for lazy breakfasts at the bistro table for two with the balcony doors flung open wide. There's everything you could need to rustle up brunch and mimosas in the designer kitchen with a view. Or keep things easy and do like the locals with freshly brewed coffees and obligatory pastel de natas.

When it's time to stretch your legs and explore, you can easily wander to all the city's hotspots from here – starting with the charming marina for a dose of fresh sea air. Then the rest of the day is yours to lose yourself to the city's atmospheric streets, stumbling across Fado bars for live music and Poncha cocktails along the way – just like you imagined.  

A Fine Art

Not only is this home a five-minute walk from the heart of Funchal, but it’s also within fifteen minutes of the Lavradores Market and the cathedral.  As with many locations in Madeira, this place is on a hill, so expect a climb back home (or you could just get a cab). It’s worth it, though, as this apartment has a shared pool and gym. But the pool terrace is not the only outdoor space – this home has a private balcony overlooking lush greenery too. Your host even provides a tablet for accessing the internet.

Beams of Orange

Nestled in hilly Monte, this picture-perfect home is steeped in Madeiran charm. Unwind in the open-plan living area or slide open the glass doors and head onto the deck, where you’ll be able to soak up uninterrupted views of the Atlantic Ocean from the comfort of a poolside sun lounger. You might feel as though you’ve stepped straight into a glossy travel magazine, but it’s not all style over substance here. From the home lift to the outdoor kitchen’s electrically adjustable cover, you’ll have everything you need for a comfortable stay, so why not pour yourself a glass of wine and toast your coastal oasis? 

This is the kind of place you’ll be more than happy to linger in, but if you fancy a change of scenery, there’s plenty to keep you busy nearby. Wander down to the local bakery and treat yourself to a fresh pastry or two, then make your way into Funchal’s old town (2.2 kilometres away) to mingle with the locals. Snap a selfie by the city gates, savour a cocktail or two next to Funchal Bay, or simply soak up the atmosphere as you meander the cobbled streets.

Cosy and romantic, this classical cottage is located just a short drive from Funchal, the vibrant capital of Madeira. As such, it's the perfect base to explore sightseeing in the city, swimming and sunbathing at the seaside, and places of natural beauty in the countryside.

As soon as you set eyes on this tiny home, you'll see just how special it is. It's covered in leafy plants and lush flowers, and sits in an elevated spot, so you can enjoy dreamy sea views beyond the flowers. Outside, there's a covered terrace where you can relax with a good book or sip sundowners in the evenings. Inside, you'll find lots of character – from wooden beam ceilings to exposed stonework. It may be small and the kitchen is best suited for light bites, but you can't deny it has oodles of charm.

We can already imagine lounging on the sofa – a glass of Madeira wine, optional – and gathering around the dining table to snack on a home-cooked Prego, a Madeiran steak sandwich. The comfortable bed will sure to be calling your name – snuggle in and wake up the next day feeling refreshed and ready for adventure. 

Speaking of adventures, you're smack-dab in the heart of Funchal's historic streets, so you'll have plenty to discover nearby. Many of the city's must-see sights are within walking distance, including the marina, Sé Catedral do Funchal and the famous cable car to whisk you up the mountain. Add in the fantastic restaurants, local markets and museums on your doorstep, and you'll never have a dull day here.

Dappled Silhouette

For those hoping to keep up productivity and get some remote work done during their stay, there's a dedicated desk in the main living area. Set your laptop up and enjoy the sunshine, then head out for some laps in the pool or work on that perfect holiday tan.

No car? No problem. You'll be within easy walking distance of a lovely bakery where you can pick up some freshly baked bread, plus a couple of restaurants where you can enjoy the local cuisine. If you're hoping for a city escape, head to the bus stop right outside your doorstep and hop on a bus to the centre of Funchal (alternatively a twenty-minute walk downhill), where you'll find no shortage of things to fill your days with, whether it be visiting the stunning Monte Palace or the Praia Formosa pebble beach.

A Hillside Beginning

When you get as much sunshine as Madeira enjoys every year, you would be a fool to design a home without large windows. Thankfully, the brain behind this apartment in the centre of Funchal – renowned Portuguese architect Raúl Ramalho – was on the same wavelength and as a result, the space is flooded with natural light and blessed with wonderful views out over the city. The interior has also been recently renovated and the funky decor wouldn't look out of place in some of Europe's more discerning cities — the sleek grey kitchen looks particularly inviting, we must say. When you're ready to explore, start with Funchal Catherdral, only five minutes away by foot, before heading along the cobblestone streets of the Old Town and finishing up with a well-earned drink at a seafront bar along the promenade.

We love this bitesize apartment in the heart of Funchal and think it provides a great base for discovering all of the very best that this unique island has to offer. With a cool, modern decor accented with splashes of colour as well as lovely views over the town, this home certainly proves that small can most definitely be mighty.

Start your day with an authentic Madeiran breakfast and your favourite brew as the gentle morning sunshine streams through the large windows. Then, it's off to see what the island has to offer.

Situated behind the Funchal Municipal Garden, you'll find yourself ideally placed along one of the main arteries of the city. Take a short walk to the famous Municipal Theatre of Baltazar Dias. Or spend the day doing a spot of shopping along the city's leafy boulevards or stroll through the lovely Funchal Marina, perhaps stopping at one of the waterfront restaurants for a sampling of traditional Madeiran cuisine.
