It's a great spot for exploring on foot, though there's plenty to love here besides the location. For starters, the coastal views are hard to beat. Another favourite is the hot tub – ideal for a sunset soak – while the terrace has alfresco dining covered. The design inside is modern and bright, with a collection of comfortable bedrooms to choose from. As the fifth bedroom boasts a trundle bed, we think this pad is best for eight adults and two children.

As you can probably begin to tell, it's a rather relaxing address. There are lots of spots in the tropical garden in which to appreciate the local tranquillity, whether on the back of a lounger or while dining alfresco on the table. Whenever the temperature takes a dip, you can head back inside and cosy up next to the contemporary fireplace in the lounge.

When it comes to seeing a little more of the locale, there are vast swathes of golden beaches covering the Portuguese coastline that start from as close as 1.5km away, while the nearest town is only 2km away for when you're in need of restaurants and shops.

If we were to tell you of a hideaway that sits in the middle of twelve hectares of lush pine forest in rural Comporta, you might imagine a certain type of home and we're willing to wager that it doesn't look anything like this wonderfully modern residence.

Not only does the boxy white exterior look visually striking from the outside, but this sense of awe will continue as you step through the glass doors. Our favourite space is the double-height living, which is flooded with natural light from the copious number of windows that line the walls. However, the modern brown kitchen and equally glossy bathrooms are sure to take your breath away, as well. The design throughout feels cohesive, united by a preference for clean lines, sleek surfaces and chic minimalism.

Given the agreeable climate that this corner of the Iberian peninsula enjoys, you'll likely want to spend as many hours outdoors as possible and that's easy to do here. The long infinity swimming pool is both wonderfully refreshing when the midday sun is at its highest and made all the more relaxing by the heady scent of fragrant herbs and vegetation that grow around the sides. There are plenty of terraces and balconies on which to take a seat and do nothing more strenuous than soak up the rays, but you can also find a tennis court if you fancy a match or two.

Although there's a strong sense of tranquillity from the isolated position, you don't have to venture far to find the Portuguese coastline. Carvalhal and Pego beaches can be reached in ten minutes or so in the car, and there are a few restaurants and bars to be found close to these seaside spots.

Despite the home’s recent renovation in 2021, the traditional touches of a terracotta tiled roof, original gas burner, and Portuguese-style tiles were kept. It’s been beautifully done to suit both a modern and traditional preference, respecting its roots while providing a contemporary level of comfort. The kitchen is a perfect example of this – top-notch appliances are met with rustic surfaces and shelves, embodying the bohemian spirit of Comporta. Life stands still and you finally get to the level of relaxation you’ve been craving. Afternoon pool dips are followed by crisp glasses of wine, enjoyed in the sparkling white 70s-style sofa pit. When dinnertime rolls around, present a feast of salads garnished with the herbs picked from your garden and barbecued local produce along the outdoor dining table, covered by the straw pergola.

Just minutes in the car from the charming village of Melides, this stunning retreat is all about reconnecting with nature and embracing tranquillity. The dedicated yoga and meditation room with vaulted ceilings is perfect whether you have a daily practice or just want a peaceful spot to retreat to. Set on over 25 acres, there's plenty of outdoor space to enjoy – from the swimming pool to a cosy sunbathing nook leading off one of the bedrooms. You'll definitely want to hire a car to get around. But with the white sands of Aberta Nova beach just ten minutes away, and everything from horseback riding and golf to wellness events available locally, it's well worth it.

But in the evenings, the fireplace and warm-toned lighting make for wonderful cosy nights spent watching films. During your stay, you'll have privileged access to the private beach of Brejinhos, with beach towels provided to help you make the most of it. We think it's a great choice for families travelling with kids – your host can provide a high chair and cot for an additional fee, and you can rent bikes or a buggy for exploring the area.

Set in the quiet village of Muda, Comporta, the surroundings may be all stone pine trees and rice fields, but the interiors are effortlessly glamorous.
