She’s very friendly, and always happy to give some tips and recommendations for the local area. Of course, the big attraction is the lake, and all the outdoor activities that come with it. Whether you’re tempted by kayaking, fishing or hiking, there’s something for you. And if you’ve tired yourself out, the home itself is a wonderful place to while away the evenings, with a stone fireplace, Netflix, and plenty of blankets and pillows to curl up in.

Head out to visit Joshua Tree National Park – an eight-minute drive away – or walk ten minutes to explore downtown Joshua Tree with its eco-markets, saloons, restaurants and wine bars. After a day of adventuring, come back home to mix yourself a margarita and pop a record on to dance to, or head out to the shaded deck to watch the sunset over the desert with a cold beer. As night closes in, light the fire pit and watch the sky turn into a dazzling show of stars before retreating to your cool bedrooms for a serene night’s sleep.

Inside the design is simple with hand-dyed indigo bedding and touches of local art – the sleek desert motif is clear, and a perfect complement to adventures and hikes in the natural landscape all around. Take the half-hour drive to Joshua Tree National Park, and don't forget to take your camera with you – we can vouch for the sublime vistas.

On arrival you’ll discover an elegant Spanish colonial-style home, sprawling out luxuriously across one level. Slide open its French doors to reveal interiors worthy of a design magazine cover – vaulted ceilings, lofty bedrooms (each with their own bathroom and patio), and an achingly-cool living space that begs to be lounged around in. 

Carrying on outside, through magnificent gardens, you’ll discover a contemporary two-storey pool house that brings this place right into the 21st century, with one of the most well-equipped gyms we ever did see. But the star of the show has to be the pool and gardens. With 360-degree mountain vistas, soaring palm trees, lush lawns, and hummingbirds busy going about their day, there is no better place to be. Start the day with a few lengths in the pool and soak in the spa, before settling down on one of the many sun decks to catch some rays. 

When it’s time to rustle up a meal, fire up the barbecue in the impressive outdoor dining area, while friends gather around the fire pit. Or let a private chef take over in the gourmet kitchen, complete with a wine fridge and built-in coffee maker to cover off all the essentials. And should you be tempted to stray from this desert retreat, you’ll find downtown Palm Springs a mere fifteen minutes drive away. Though why you’d ever want to leave is anyone’s guess.

It’s also worth mentioning that the location is pretty convenient. Despite the feeling of complete seclusion, downtown Joshua Tree is about five minutes away, with Palm Springs less than hour. And Michael and his team go the extra mile in their levels of service, providing a dedicated hospitality concierge in order to help you arrange anything you want or need.

Fitting more than ten guests into a single home is tricky, so this estate is comprised of three — all luxurious and equipped with everything you might need for a great stay. It's situated in the middle of California's wine country, making it easy to visit the nearby wineries to sample the local vintages. For those who prefer staying in and relaxing, there's plenty to do at home too. You'll find the sparkling private swimming pool surrounded by plenty of sun loungers, where you can splash around or catch some rays. There's also a barbecue area and a fire pit, ideal for keeping your guests cosy and well-fed after dark. Plus, there's plenty to explore in the sprawling grounds – including your own vineyard, fruit orchard, and even an equestrian centre. It's hard not to form lifelong memories when you're in such a special place – we think you'll love sharing your days in this idyllic slice of California with your family or friends.

Forest cabins generally have an old-world feel to them but not this modern beauty. Built out on stilts at the top of a hill and set over three floors – each with a deck to make the most of the views – this home looks out across the woods to the mountains. Set on the edge of the Pine Mountain Club community, shared local facilities include an outdoor pool, golf course and tennis courts. Inside the cabin, there's a distinct Skandi look, with white walls, plenty of natural wood and occasional bright pops of colour. A log burner up on a brick-built hearth is the centrepiece of the double-height living space, while large picture windows and sliding doors make sure you see your surroundings from every seat in the house. There's a modern kitchen and an office area if you have to get some work done while you're away, and a children's playroom – making it perfect for families. Choose a spot to sit outside with a cool beer, or head up to the barbecue deck to use the grill. And after a long hike on the trails, steam away your aches and pains in the home's sauna.

Located in the heart of Joshua Tree, this knock-out hideaway has been featured in everything from fashion shoots to music videos as well as Andy Samberg's film "Palm Springs" – a fact that doesn't surprise us considering its otherworldly style. This home subtly blends into the desertscape with its earthy tones and rusty finishes, featuring a fusion of Wabi-Sabi and modern design.

There are large sliding doors that open to reveal the sandy 8-acre private garden and mountains beyond. Make a beeline for the expansive outdoor deck and saltwater pool with integrated hot tub and Baja shelves. Lie back in the cool water and gaze up at an endless blue sky. At night, you can spot the Milkyway as you chat with friends around the 10-foot fire pit. Cooking up a feast or crafting cocktails is easy with the chef's kitchen, making this home utterly perfect for a desert escape with friends or family. 

With free access to the Desert View Conservation Area of Joshua Tree National Park, you'll find mountain views and trails that can keep you occupied for days here. Though when you are ready to get back in touch with civilisation, rest assured you'll be just a four-minute drive to the centre of Joshua Tree with restaurants, coffee shops, and yoga studios within easy reach. 


High Desert Mirage

Experience the history of old town, La Quinta first hand at this casita complex. The protected indoor/outdoor dining space with white-wash walls, wicker lampshades and Mexican blankets paint a scene out of an old western. A private pool and spa is shared between the two casitas for families and friends to come together for some fun in the sun, or an evening barbecue. Bikes are also available should you want to make a short cycle to the shops and restaurants of La Quinta. Inside, the rustic white walls, exposed beams and wooden flooring continue the historic feel. Though the sleek, stainless steel appliances in the otherwise rustic kitchen are distinctly 21st-century, there is no escaping the old-world charm of this place. Having said that, no one is leaving you totally disconnected, with modern comforts of wifi, Apple TV, and bluetooth sound systems. It is up to you whether you want to switch off here. Old or new, this is the best of both.

When architect, Malek Alqadi combined astute environmentalism with his exquisite taste, he didn't just create this home, he sparked a revolution in sustainable tourism. Set on the edge of the Joshua Tree National Park, guests take the lead in operating this clean yet luxurious off-grid space. Think serious stargazing sessions through a telescope, showering by a boulder, and falling asleep under the desert sky with a crackling fireplace at your feet—the second bedroom is open to the elements, with no walls or ceiling. And it's packed with technology too. You can measure your energy consumption, change your light settings and set cooling and heating temperatures of the space. Wrapped in salvaged weathering steel and up-cycled details, it raises the bar on stylish, conscious travel.

Inside, the owners have gone to town with the otherworldly theme. In the kitchen, sleek metal kitchen countertops like the exterior of a rocket ship are paired back by warm brick walls. In the living room, egg shaped chairs sit opposite a honeycombed bookshelf, with a wood-and-metal floating spiral staircase that leads up to the loft bedroom. All three bedrooms have deluxe double beds, luxurious bathrooms with walk-in showers, and uninterrupted desert views. Joshua Tree National Park - and its miles of remote hiking routes - is at your fingertips, or if you're ready to re-enter reality, Downtown Palm Springs, with its glitzy shops and trendy restaurants, is a short drive away.

Dew Drop combines relaxed West Coast living with the best of Cape Cod's design, for a beach-front home that is sure to put its guests at ease. Its position between Santa Barbara and Malibu means that it’s a little bit quieter than your standard California beach retreat, but the centre of Oxnard is still easy to reach. It was built when Landers and its Mojave Desert setting first became a place of pilgrimage for the original hippies. Inside, there's a welcoming, open-plan feel with an eclectic collection of decorative odds and ends. This is desert living, so outside there's the firepit table with distant mountain views, a barbecue grill and a traditional cowboy tub for getting clean in the open air. For a town of just 2,000 people, there’s plenty of things to do nearby. Try sonic healing sessions at the circular Integratron or marvel at the Giant Rock – a seven-storey-high boulder. Drink local brews from the Landers Brewing Company, explore Joshua Tree National Park and do some next-level stargazing.

A home for California swell chasers to search out, this home will have you in the water in no time, with the sands of San Clemente a five-minute drive from your front door and some of SoCal's best beach breaks within an hour's drive.

However, that's not to say that if you're not a surf pro, you won't find something for you here. Your host provides some boogie boards for the kids and beach chairs for a slightly more sedate experience down at the beach. But a stay here isn't just about the coastline, with hiking trails, pristine golf courses, and shopping are all a stone's throw away.
