If the interiors of this minimalist home appear to have jumped straight out of the pages of a glossy magazine, you’re not far off. This home, designed by Palmer and Kriesel is hidden away in a Palm Springs cul-de-sac and has previously graced the pages of the New York Times. Homage to all things mid-century, with Eames chairs, Nelson lamps and a vintage Malm fireplace in the master bedroom.

We were wowed by the open living area, designed with socialising in mind and with great views of the backyard. Out in the garden, reclining by the shimmering turquoise pool is the perfect way to unwind, but if you need to take your relaxing to the next level, there’s also a hot tub to bubble the night away in. Dine alfresco under the endless desert sky, then end the evening around the flickering fire pit with a glass of something strong as the sun sets behind the mountains.

When you want to venture out, downtown Palm Springs is only a five-minute drive away, and Joshua Tree National Park, roughly an hour away, is a must-see for hikers and nature enthusiasts. Visit The Palm Springs Art Museum, an eight-minute drive away which features complex sculptures, glassworks, and photographs by renowned artists such as Andy Warhol and Diane Arbus.

You can also drive to downtown La Quinta in around fifteen minutes, or head into Joshua Tree National Park for a hike.

The outdoors of the property are wild and isolated and will appeal to the adventurous and those craving solitude. Steps have been taken to tame the wilderness in ways that inspire relaxation, such as the outdoor bathtub, shower, plunge-pool, and many hammocks.

It's an oasis of calm and solitude in the heart of the Palm Desert – for an ultra-private retreat to California, this home really hits the mark. Originally built in 1935, you can find this vibrant villa in the sought-after Movie Colony East neighbourhood, known for its cosy restaurants and famous residents. Boasting a spacious yard with a private pool, spend your days relaxing on a sun lounger and cooling off in the water, but if you're looking for a little adventure, there's plenty to be had in the city.

Green spaces like Ruth Hardy Park offer picturesque jogging and picnic spots, while Wellness Park is ideal for some quiet meditation in the warm open air. There are some great hiking trails in Palm Springs, too – head to Joshua Tree National Park to wander the striking desert landscapes dotted with rugged rock formations and get the best views over the clifftops.

When you get home, hit the Jacuzzi to rest any tired muscles, then get creative at the barbecue and cook an alfresco meal to enjoy on the patio. Post-dinner, gather around the fire pit to share a few drinks and watch the sun dip behind the mountains and palm trees.

"Smile" says the neon sign above the shimmering pool at this sensational Palm Springs home, and it's impossible not to when you're surrounded by such stunning mountain scenery and plentiful sunshine. The garden is the best place to take those views - grab a seat under the bright yellow and white parasol on one of the matching sun loungers that give off serious French Riviera vibes. The mellow yellow colour scheme runs through the inside here too, thanks to the tiled canary-coloured fireplace, sunny vases and mustard lampshades. That reminder to smile (there's a P.S. Smile neon sign in the living room, and the slogan is splashed on framed prints in the bedroom) follows you here too - not that we think you'll forget to grin in this playful home. The bedrooms are just as joyful, with rattan bed frames and pink and emerald green tropical print wallpaper. In the bathroom, framed pictures of Marilyn Monroe keep a watchful eye as you perfect your make-up. Marilyn famously said a smile is the best make-up a girl could ever wear, and a stay here is sure to leave you looking like a million dollars.

This chic home is an excellent example of mid-century modern architecture, set just two blocks away from iconic Palm Canyon Drive. The effortlessly cool interiors give a nod to the past, with antique style patterned rugs, statement lighting and unique artworks on the walls. Outside, there's a glittering swimming pool, lined with bright white sun loungers and tangerine parasols, where you can take a dip with the dramatic backdrop of the San Jacinto Mountains. If you fancy getting active, take a hike up to the peaks, or hop on the aerial tramway to avoid breaking a sweat – either way, you'll be treated to jaw-dropping views over Coachella Valley. Come home for a sundowner on the terrace, before stretching out on the curved green sofas with a classic Hollywood movie.

Escape to this remote studio sanctuary and reconnect with mother nature. This is more than just an unpretentious cabin in the desert – this is a home that invites you to let go of life's complications and to instead find your roots in nature and embrace the bear necessities – pretty much in keeping with the Joshua Tree area surrounding it. The highlight of this home is, of course, soaking in the granite bathtub with water supplied from the mineral-rich hot spring. Staying here is also about spending days and nights on the porch, breathing in the clean air with sunrise stretches, daily meditation and stargazing in the desert evening's clear night skies which – in our opinion – is some of the best stargazing on the planet. Inside the design is simple with hand-dyed indigo bedding and touches of local art – the sleek desert motif is clear, and a perfect complement to adventures and hikes in the natural landscape all around. Take the half-hour drive to Joshua Tree National Park, and don't forget to take your camera with you – we can vouch for the sublime vistas. 

The Chaparral Oasis

This secluded sanctuary blends modern luxury with the boundless wonder of the desert. Vast and peaceful, it’s the perfect place to escape into the tranquillity of nature. 

Explore every crevice of the 2.5 acre stretch of natural beauty before settling down for sunset on the terrace. You can always treat yourself to a calming dip in the hot tub for true opulence. When night falls on the dreamy abode, make sure to rest in the hammocks and gaze at the romance of the stars.

Set in two acres of private desert landscape, this bijou cabin is a place to unwind and let the rush of modern life slip away. In the rugged landscape surrounding this home, you’ve got a hot tub and macrame hammocks sitting beneath the big desert sky. Out favourite spot to watch the sunset is the ‘moon bench’ and once the sky has speckled with stars its time to get a fire crackling in the white-plaster fire pit and look for shooting stars.

Inside, you can feel that the hosts have poured their heart and soul into the decor, where crisp walls are adorned with object d’art in every desert hue. Furniture is vintage and hand-picked, and there’s a record player to curate the perfect soundtrack to your desert escape. The kitchen has all the essentials, and the selection of ceramic crockery feels as though each mug and plate has been considered.

If you want to get out and explore, Joshua Tree town is a twenty-minute drive and the entrance to Joshua Tree National Park is just beyond for endless desert and mountain hiking trails.

It was built when Landers and its Mojave Desert setting first became a place of pilgrimage for the original hippies. Inside, there's a welcoming, open-plan feel with an eclectic collection of decorative odds and ends. This is desert living, so outside there's the firepit table with distant mountain views, a barbecue grill and a traditional cowboy tub for getting clean in the open air. For a town of just 2,000 people, there’s plenty of things to do nearby. Try sonic healing sessions at the circular Integratron or marvel at the Giant Rock – a seven-storey-high boulder. Drink local brews from the Landers Brewing Company, explore Joshua Tree National Park and do some next-level stargazing.
