It's situated in the middle of California's wine country, making it easy to visit the nearby wineries to sample the local vintages. For those who prefer staying in and relaxing, there's plenty to do at home too. You'll find the sparkling private swimming pool surrounded by plenty of sun loungers, where you can splash around or catch some rays. There's also a barbecue area and a fire pit, ideal for keeping your guests cosy and well-fed after dark. Plus, there's plenty to explore in the sprawling grounds – including your own vineyard, fruit orchard, and even an equestrian centre. It's hard not to form lifelong memories when you're in such a special place – we think you'll love sharing your days in this idyllic slice of California with your family or friends.

On arrival you’ll discover an elegant Spanish colonial-style home, sprawling out luxuriously across one level. Slide open its French doors to reveal interiors worthy of a design magazine cover – vaulted ceilings, lofty bedrooms (each with their own bathroom and patio), and an achingly-cool living space that begs to be lounged around in. 

Carrying on outside, through magnificent gardens, you’ll discover a contemporary two-storey pool house that brings this place right into the 21st century, with one of the most well-equipped gyms we ever did see. But the star of the show has to be the pool and gardens. With 360-degree mountain vistas, soaring palm trees, lush lawns, and hummingbirds busy going about their day, there is no better place to be. Start the day with a few lengths in the pool and soak in the spa, before settling down on one of the many sun decks to catch some rays. 

When it’s time to rustle up a meal, fire up the barbecue in the impressive outdoor dining area, while friends gather around the fire pit. Or let a private chef take over in the gourmet kitchen, complete with a wine fridge and built-in coffee maker to cover off all the essentials. And should you be tempted to stray from this desert retreat, you’ll find downtown Palm Springs a mere fifteen minutes drive away. Though why you’d ever want to leave is anyone’s guess.

It’s been profiled in Dwell Magazine as well as on countless high-end websites, and you can immediately see why. With glass sliding doors in each room inviting you to step out into the wild beauty outside, there’s a seamless flow between indoors and outdoors making this home feel completely at one with the Mojave Desert. We love the balcony equipped with a sun chair – accessed via the master bedroom and living room – and the outdoor shower that will get any morning off to a refreshing start. Spend the day hiking around your sun-drenched house, taking in the majesty of the ancient junipers, weathered boulders, desert oaks and piñon pines, or hop in your car to visit Joshua Tree National Park, just a twenty-minute drive away. After a day of adventuring, come back home for drinks around the fire pit before firing up the barbecue for an alfresco feast. Then end the night with a soak in the hot tub while you watch the night sky turn into a blanket of shimmering stars.

Escape to this remote studio sanctuary and reconnect with mother nature. This is more than just an unpretentious cabin in the desert – this is a home that invites you to let go of life's complications and to instead find your roots in nature and embrace the bear necessities – pretty much in keeping with the Joshua Tree area surrounding it. The highlight of this home is, of course, soaking in the granite bathtub with water supplied from the mineral-rich hot spring. Take this moment to absorb the water's healing properties and nourish your body. Staying here is also about spending days and nights on the porch, breathing in the clean air with sunrise stretches, daily meditation and stargazing in the desert evening's clear night skies which – in our opinion – is some of the best stargazing on the planet. Inside the design is simple with hand-dyed indigo bedding and touches of local art – the sleek desert motif is clear, and a perfect complement to adventures and hikes in the natural landscape all around. Take the half-hour drive to Joshua Tree National Park, and don't forget to take your camera with you – we can vouch for the sublime vistas.

Full of personalised little touches and less than ten minutes from downtown Santa Barbara, this modern coastal cottage is an Instagrammer's dream. From the outside, it takes inspiration from industrial-style shipping containers, while inside the home's muted palette and minimalist design induces a peaceful serenity. A couple or solo traveller will find it delivers a faultless experience – from the brand-new, bespoke kitchen to an always-perfect temperature, thanks to the air conditioning. Although when the weather is mild, we recommend opening the French doors and allowing indoor and outdoor spaces to become one. Head out to visit Joshua Tree National Park – an eight-minute drive away – or walk ten minutes to explore downtown Joshua Tree with its eco-markets, saloons, restaurants and wine bars. After a day of adventuring, come back home to mix yourself a margarita and pop a record on to dance to, or head out to the shaded deck to watch the sunset over the desert with a cold beer. As night closes in, light the fire pit and watch the sky turn into a dazzling show of stars before retreating to your cool bedrooms for a serene night’s sleep.

This showstopper is here to attract the architectural fans — so don't tell us you haven't noticed the deconstructed minimalism and the statement furniture to go with it. Smoking Pixels is a treat for the eyes, filling every corner of the home, as well as its considerable exterior with something beautiful. If you choose this home, you'll be greeted by the sun as soon as you wake up. Make yourself a cup of coffee and sit in the perfectly manicured garden, then go for a swim in the saltwater pool and admire the symmetry of your holiday home. Keep relaxing or try out take the car out to Palm Springs or Indio. When you're back, get the fire pit going and wait for the stars to show, then retreat to the majestic lounge and watch a movie together with your loved ones.

Go to bed after watching the spectacular sunset over the Pacific and wake up to the sound of the crashing waves at this jaw-dropping beachfront home in the surfside city of San Clemente. 

Contemporary coastal cool is the order of the day, with plenty of light wood, fresh blue furnishings and pristine white walls, all accentuated by the sunlight that pours in 342 days a year through large windows and retractable glass doors that look out over the ocean.

There's plenty of space for all the family, with large open living spaces, a stunning modern kitchen with eye-catching quartz worktops, a dedicated games room with a billiards table, plus a lovely office to make the idea of working while on holiday a little more palatable. 

Sleeping arrangements are taken care of across five spacious bedrooms. A large loft room packed with games and a console allows you to leave the kids to it as you enjoy a glass of something cold out on the covered terrace, or lay out on a lounger on the promontory pointing out to sea.

If the call of the ocean proves too much, you won't have to walk far to access Lost Winds beach below. With consistent surf, volleyball courts, and the opportunity to jog or cycle along the 2.6-mile beach trail, there's plenty on offer here. However, seasoned surfers might want to check out nearby breaks including Trestles, T Street and San Onofre. Lowers (at Trestles beach) is the best of the bunch and the home of high performance surfing. Sometimes it's best just to sit back and marvel at the pros.

After a day of adrenaline-pumping activity, cooking may well be the last thing on your mind. Handily, San Clemente is home to a wide array of restaurants serving everything from American comfort food, farm-to-table fare and creative Mexican classics washed down with a mescal.

Forest cabins generally have an old-world feel to them but not this modern beauty. Built out on stilts at the top of a hill and set over three floors – each with a deck to make the most of the views – this home looks out across the woods to the mountains. Set on the edge of the Pine Mountain Club community, shared local facilities include an outdoor pool, golf course and tennis courts. Inside the cabin, there's a distinct Skandi look, with white walls, plenty of natural wood and occasional bright pops of colour. A log burner up on a brick-built hearth is the centrepiece of the double-height living space, while large picture windows and sliding doors make sure you see your surroundings from every seat in the house. There's a modern kitchen and an office area if you have to get some work done while you're away, and a children's playroom – making it perfect for families. Choose a spot to sit outside with a cool beer, or head up to the barbecue deck to use the grill. And after a long hike on the trails, steam away your aches and pains in the home's sauna.

This chic home is an excellent example of mid-century modern architecture, set just two blocks away from iconic Palm Canyon Drive. The effortlessly cool interiors give a nod to the past, with antique style patterned rugs, statement lighting and unique artworks on the walls. Outside, there's a glittering swimming pool, lined with bright white sun loungers and tangerine parasols, where you can take a dip with the dramatic backdrop of the San Jacinto Mountains. If you fancy getting active, take a hike up to the peaks, or hop on the aerial tramway to avoid breaking a sweat – either way, you'll be treated to jaw-dropping views over Coachella Valley. Come home for a sundowner on the terrace, before stretching out on the curved green sofas with a classic Hollywood movie.

If the interiors of this minimalist home appear to have jumped straight out of the pages of a glossy magazine, you’re not far off. This home, designed by Palmer and Kriesel is hidden away in a Palm Springs cul-de-sac and has previously graced the pages of the New York Times. Homage to all things mid-century, with Eames chairs, Nelson lamps and a vintage Malm fireplace in the master bedroom.

We were wowed by the open living area, designed with socialising in mind and with great views of the backyard. Out in the garden, reclining by the shimmering turquoise pool is the perfect way to unwind, but if you need to take your relaxing to the next level, there’s also a hot tub to bubble the night away in. Dine alfresco under the endless desert sky, then end the evening around the flickering fire pit with a glass of something strong as the sun sets behind the mountains.

When you want to venture out, downtown Palm Springs is only a five-minute drive away, and Joshua Tree National Park, roughly an hour away, is a must-see for hikers and nature enthusiasts. Visit The Palm Springs Art Museum, an eight-minute drive away which features complex sculptures, glassworks, and photographs by renowned artists such as Andy Warhol and Diane Arbus.

We’re willing to bet that some good-natured individual watched a rainbow materialise in the sky, grabbed a handful of the resulting magic, threw it in a gift box wrapped in serenity and released it into this home. With eye-catching custom murals and generous touches of blue all around, you’ll find yourself in an oasis as exuberant as the outdoors of Palm Springs that Hollywood stars can’t seem to get enough of. 

The home is a mid-century modern delight, and you’ll find a library with a lounge just for reading, a pool terrace dotted with energising palm trees and sensational views of the mountains, and a games room made for indulging in some friendly competition with your fellow guests. You won't want to leave but if you ever decide to, an adventure is always calling out in the Indian Canyons and you’re a five-minute drive from the eclectic mix of shops (everything from candy shops to record stores) in Downtown Palm Springs.

Pow! This Mid-Century Modern house certainly has visual impact. From kitsch gold taps in the bathroom to the African nick-nacks adorning every surface in the living room, its style is best described as “more is more”. Every care has been taken to preserve this home in its original 1950s glamour, when its owner ran the famed Chi Chi Lounge, frequented by celebrity clientele who’d pop over to his house for Sunday brunch. You can easily imagine Frank Sinatra propped up at the private bar in the lounge, or sipping a cocktail by the kidney-shaped pool outside. Why not channel Ol’ Blue Eyes with a singsong around the piano after a day exploring all that Palm Springs has to offer. The restaurants and shops of East Palm Canyon Drive are within walking distance and it's a short drive to downtown.
