Wild Rocks is one of those homes that always appears effortlessly chic. Designed by Oller & Pejic, it’s an architectural gem set against Yucca Valley’s rugged desert terrain. The sliding glass doors blur the lines between the inside and outside, allowing you to enjoy home-cooked meals on the terrace, gaze at the stars, and relax in the hot tub. We also loved the enormous record collection, which features some of the host Joann’s all-time favourite tunes. Found just a short drive from Joshua Tree National Park, there are plenty of exciting adventures waiting for you.

This home subtly blends into the desertscape with its earthy tones and rusty finishes, featuring a fusion of Wabi-Sabi and modern design.

There are large sliding doors that open to reveal the sandy 8-acre private garden and mountains beyond. Make a beeline for the expansive outdoor deck and saltwater pool with integrated hot tub and Baja shelves. Lie back in the cool water and gaze up at an endless blue sky. At night, you can spot the Milkyway as you chat with friends around the 10-foot fire pit. Cooking up a feast or crafting cocktails is easy with the chef's kitchen, making this home utterly perfect for a desert escape with friends or family. 

With free access to the Desert View Conservation Area of Joshua Tree National Park, you'll find mountain views and trails that can keep you occupied for days here. Though when you are ready to get back in touch with civilisation, rest assured you'll be just a four-minute drive to the centre of Joshua Tree with restaurants, coffee shops, and yoga studios within easy reach.

The highlight of this home is, of course, soaking in the granite bathtub with water supplied from the mineral-rich hot spring. Staying here is also about spending days and nights on the porch, breathing in the clean air with sunrise stretches, daily meditation and stargazing in the desert evening's clear night skies which – in our opinion – is some of the best stargazing on the planet. Inside the design is simple with hand-dyed indigo bedding and touches of local art – the sleek desert motif is clear, and a perfect complement to adventures and hikes in the natural landscape all around. Take the half-hour drive to Joshua Tree National Park, and don't forget to take your camera with you – we can vouch for the sublime vistas.

When architect, Malek Alqadi combined astute environmentalism with his exquisite taste, he didn't just create this home, he sparked a revolution in sustainable tourism. Set on the edge of the Joshua Tree National Park, guests take the lead in operating this clean yet luxurious off-grid space. Think serious stargazing sessions through a telescope, showering by a boulder, and falling asleep under the desert sky with a crackling fireplace at your feet—the second bedroom is open to the elements, with no walls or ceiling. And it's packed with technology too. You can measure your energy consumption, change your light settings and set cooling and heating temperatures of the space. Wrapped in salvaged weathering steel and up-cycled details, it raises the bar on stylish, conscious travel.

As soon as you step through the door of this renovated 1960s house, you know you’ve found something pretty special. Days here pass by like a dream, hiking through the rugged landscapes of Joshua Tree National Park, or exploring the artsy town, before coming back to your oasis for a soak in the saltwater hot tub. There’s also an outdoor rain shower if you want to wash the desert dust away. As the sun dips below the horizon, sip a sundowner in the retro hanging chair before gathering round the firepit to toast s’mores as the stars pop out one by one.

Live the jet-set lifestyle at this Palm Springs villa of grand entrances and epic proportions. On arrival you’ll discover an elegant Spanish colonial-style home, sprawling out luxuriously across one level. Slide open its French doors to reveal interiors worthy of a design magazine cover – vaulted ceilings, lofty bedrooms (each with their own bathroom and patio), and an achingly-cool living space that begs to be lounged around in. 

Carrying on outside, through magnificent gardens, you’ll discover a contemporary two-storey pool house that brings this place right into the 21st century, with one of the most well-equipped gyms we ever did see. But the star of the show has to be the pool and gardens. With 360-degree mountain vistas, soaring palm trees, lush lawns, and hummingbirds busy going about their day, there is no better place to be. Start the day with a few lengths in the pool and soak in the spa, before settling down on one of the many sun decks to catch some rays. 

When it’s time to rustle up a meal, fire up the barbecue in the impressive outdoor dining area, while friends gather around the fire pit. Or let a private chef take over in the gourmet kitchen, complete with a wine fridge and built-in coffee maker to cover off all the essentials. And should you be tempted to stray from this desert retreat, you’ll find downtown Palm Springs a mere fifteen minutes drive away. Though why you’d ever want to leave is anyone’s guess.

Architectural accents also lurk behind every corner – we especially loved the exposed beams and Mission-style plaster. The outdoors of the property are wild and isolated and will appeal to the adventurous and those craving solitude. Steps have been taken to tame the wilderness in ways that inspire relaxation, such as the outdoor bathtub, shower, plunge-pool, and many hammocks.

Forest cabins generally have an old-world feel to them but not this modern beauty. Built out on stilts at the top of a hill and set over three floors – each with a deck to make the most of the views – this home looks out across the woods to the mountains. Set on the edge of the Pine Mountain Club community, shared local facilities include an outdoor pool, golf course and tennis courts. Inside the cabin, there's a distinct Skandi look, with white walls, plenty of natural wood and occasional bright pops of colour. A log burner up on a brick-built hearth is the centrepiece of the double-height living space, while large picture windows and sliding doors make sure you see your surroundings from every seat in the house. There's a modern kitchen and an office area if you have to get some work done while you're away, and a children's playroom – making it perfect for families. A home for California swell chasers to search out, this home will have you in the water in no time, with the sands of San Clemente a five-minute drive from your front door and some of SoCal's best beach breaks within an hour's drive.

However, that's not to say that if you're not a surf pro, you won't find something for you here. Your host provides some boogie boards for the kids and beach chairs for a slightly more sedate experience down at the beach. But a stay here isn't just about the coastline, with hiking trails, pristine golf courses, and shopping are all a stone's throw away. 

The vibrant home itself shouldn’t go without a mention – its shared roof terrace makes for a wonderful spot to watch the sunset over the sea. Indoors, the coastal inspiration is clear. The home is a mid-century modern delight, and you’ll find a library with a lounge just for reading, a pool terrace dotted with energising palm trees and sensational views of the mountains, and a games room made for indulging in some friendly competition with your fellow guests. You won't want to leave but if you ever decide to, an adventure is always calling out in the Indian Canyons and you’re a five-minute drive from the eclectic mix of shops (everything from candy shops to record stores) in Downtown Palm Springs.
