The Beacon has everything you could ask for in a holiday retreat. The views alone are stunning, but that’s really only the start – we could also talk about the lawn, the kitchen, or the designer furniture. It’s a bit behind Malibu proper, so while you are isolated, that’s kind of the point. Having to drive to the shops is a small price to pay (particularly in a city like LA) for the splendid calm that is on offer here.

Fitted with antiques and family relics, not everyone will appreciate the dated decor, but we won't hold that against an otherwise winning home. Our favourite parts? This newly renovated beach getaway is your ticket to a quintessential Malibu stay. Being newly furnished the home feels spic-and-span throughout, and the plentiful windows mean the interiors feel like an oasis of light during the day. Listen to the soothing sound of the waves lapping into the shore, with views out over the ocean from the living area. In the evening time, the blissful oak hot tub is the perfect place to unwind after a day on the beach. With so many beach amenities available for guests to use, you'll have free access to a 2-person kayak, a surfboard, 3 boogie boards, adult and kids life jackets and a stand-up paddleboard! Set back from Escondido Beach, this home sits on a 2.5-acre estate facing the Pacific Ocean. If the waterfront views don't win you over, the pool and tennis court surely will. But the outdoor fun doesn't end there. Up on the roof terrace, a summer kitchen makes barbecuing (and stargazing) easy. Head inside and you'll find a cinema room and home gym, plus a sumptuous main suite with its own office and marble bathroom. Hiring a car is a must here, but great access to the Pacific Coast Highway puts road trips on the cards.

Location-wise, well that’s excellent too – it’s just steps away from Point Dume Village and this home has access to Riviera III, a private surf break and beach.

Built out on stilts at the top of a hill and set over three floors – each with a deck to make the most of the views – this home looks out across the woods to the mountains. Set on the edge of the Pine Mountain Club community, shared local facilities include an outdoor pool, golf course and tennis courts. Inside the cabin, there's a distinct Skandi look, with white walls, plenty of natural wood and occasional bright pops of colour. Joshua Tree National Park - and its miles of remote hiking routes - is at your fingertips, or if you're ready to re-enter reality, Downtown Palm Springs, with its glitzy shops and trendy restaurants, is a short drive away.

Head out and explore Downtown Palm Springs – a short four-minute drive away or go on a hiking adventure – reachable in as little as nine minutes by car. Then, after a busy day, fire up the barbecue for a family cook-out or take advantage of the large chef’s kitchen to create delicious feasts. 

Wind down for the night in the soothing bubbles of the hot tub before you dry off in front of the firepit with a glass of Californian wine. Go to bed after watching the spectacular sunset over the Pacific and wake up to the sound of the crashing waves at this jaw-dropping beachfront home in the surfside city of San Clemente. 

Contemporary coastal cool is the order of the day, with plenty of light wood, fresh blue furnishings and pristine white walls, all accentuated by the sunlight that pours in 342 days a year through large windows and retractable glass doors that look out over the ocean.

There's plenty of space for all the family, with large open living spaces, a stunning modern kitchen with eye-catching quartz worktops, a dedicated games room with a billiards table, plus a lovely office to make the idea of working while on holiday a little more palatable. 

Sleeping arrangements are taken care of across five spacious bedrooms. A large loft room packed with games and a console allows you to leave the kids to it as you enjoy a glass of something cold out on the covered terrace, or lay out on a lounger on the promontory pointing out to sea.

If the call of the ocean proves too much, you won't have to walk far to access Lost Winds beach below. With consistent surf, volleyball courts, and the opportunity to jog or cycle along the 2.6-mile beach trail, there's plenty on offer here. However, seasoned surfers might want to check out nearby breaks including Trestles, T Street and San Onofre. Lowers (at Trestles beach) is the best of the bunch and the home of high performance surfing. Sometimes it's best just to sit back and marvel at the pros.

After a day of adrenaline-pumping activity, cooking may well be the last thing on your mind. Handily, San Clemente is home to a wide array of restaurants serving everything from American comfort food, farm-to-table fare and creative Mexican classics washed down with a mescal.

Head out to visit Joshua Tree National Park – an eight-minute drive away – or walk ten minutes to explore downtown Joshua Tree with its eco-markets, saloons, restaurants and wine bars. After a day of adventuring, come back home to mix yourself a margarita and pop a record on to dance to, or head out to the shaded deck to watch the sunset over the desert with a cold beer. As night closes in, light the fire pit and watch the sky turn into a dazzling show of stars before retreating to your cool bedrooms for a serene night’s sleep.

After practising yoga on the patio with the sunrise, mornings are to be spent exploring; pull on your hiking boots and make your way to the Joshua Tree National Park, a twenty-minute drive from the property. Stop off in Yucca Valley’s Old Town on your way back for a bite to eat and a well-earned, ice-cold drink.

A home for California swell chasers to search out, this home will have you in the water in no time, with the sands of San Clemente a five-minute drive from your front door and some of SoCal's best beach breaks within an hour's drive.

However, that's not to say that if you're not a surf pro, you won't find something for you here. Your host provides some boogie boards for the kids and beach chairs for a slightly more sedate experience down at the beach. But a stay here isn't just about the coastline, with hiking trails, pristine golf courses, and shopping are all a stone's throw away. 

The vibrant home itself shouldn’t go without a mention – its shared roof terrace makes for a wonderful spot to watch the sunset over the sea. Indoors, the coastal inspiration is clear. Wild Rocks is one of those homes that always appears effortlessly chic. Designed by Oller & Pejic, it’s an architectural gem set against Yucca Valley’s rugged desert terrain. The sliding glass doors blur the lines between the inside and outside, allowing you to enjoy home-cooked meals on the terrace, gaze at the stars, and relax in the hot tub. We also loved the enormous record collection, which features some of the host Joann’s all-time favourite tunes. Found just a short drive from Joshua Tree National Park, there are plenty of exciting adventures waiting for you.
