What a modern masterpiece this home is. The resort-style grounds include reflection pools and waterfalls, a 70-foot pool, a hot tub and an expansive lawn. There’s also a covered outdoor kitchen with built-in barbeque and seating, as well as balconies with beautiful ocean views. The accommodation is split between the main abode and a detached guest house. We love the primary suite with its fireplaces, walk-in closet, spa-style bath, and private balcony. The living room with its floor-to-ceiling glass doors and the home cinema and bar are great for entertaining as well. Location-wise, well that’s excellent too – it’s just steps away from Point Dume Village and this home has access to Riviera III, a private surf break and beach.

The Beacon has everything you could ask for in a holiday retreat. The views alone are stunning, but that’s really only the start – we could also talk about the lawn, the kitchen, or the designer furniture. It’s a bit behind Malibu proper, so while you are isolated, that’s kind of the point. Having to drive to the shops is a small price to pay (particularly in a city like LA) for the splendid calm that is on offer here.

Fitted with antiques and family relics, not everyone will appreciate the dated decor, but we won't hold that against an otherwise winning home. Our favourite parts? Besides the two acres of private land, we're suckers for the Irish sauna, steam rooms, billiards and in-house cinema.

There are large sliding doors that open to reveal the sandy 8-acre private garden and mountains beyond. Make a beeline for the expansive outdoor deck and saltwater pool with integrated hot tub and Baja shelves. Lie back in the cool water and gaze up at an endless blue sky. At night, you can spot the Milkyway as you chat with friends around the 10-foot fire pit. Cooking up a feast or crafting cocktails is easy with the chef's kitchen, making this home utterly perfect for a desert escape with friends or family. 

With free access to the Desert View Conservation Area of Joshua Tree National Park, you'll find mountain views and trails that can keep you occupied for days here. A hilltop cabin in a unique area of the desert, this place is nestled on its own between Pioneertown and Yucca Valley on what feels like the scenic drive through Joshua Tree National Park. The trees, rocks, and landscape just outside the doors are just as breathtaking as anything you would see in the park, except you have them all to yourself. 

There’s a wood-burning stove to keep you warm on those chill nights, while one of your musically talented friends can play a tune on the grand piano (though there’s also a Bluetooth sound system, for convenience). On the walls, you’ll find original art by the late Gerald Zeldin, and an interior so impressive it was featured in the NY Times fashion section. You can feel the history of this old mining cabin in the wood-beamed ceiling and clapboard (yet modern)  bathroom. Picture-frame windows let the sunlight stream into this boho-chic interior and let you gaze out over the endless desert before you.

This place is totally off-grid and once you’ve experienced the unique feeling of heating the outdoor hot tub with firewood as you gaze at the stars, there’s no going back.

Escapes to this Yucca Valley home are guaranteed to be unforgettable. With endless views of the Mojave Desert, guests can spend hours watching pink sunsets from the hot tub, dining alfresco against the serrated silhouette, picking out constellations from a sky full of stars and toasting marshmallows over the fire pit. Inside, designer furniture and poured concrete floors feel extra stylish, and the bedrooms with luxury mattresses, percale cotton bedding and original artwork demand long lie-ins. When it’s time to rustle up a meal, fire up the barbecue in the impressive outdoor dining area, while friends gather around the fire pit. Or let a private chef take over in the gourmet kitchen, complete with a wine fridge and built-in coffee maker to cover off all the essentials. And should you be tempted to stray from this desert retreat, you’ll find downtown Palm Springs a mere fifteen minutes drive away. Though why you’d ever want to leave is anyone’s guess.

Wild Rocks is one of those homes that always appears effortlessly chic. Designed by Oller & Pejic, it’s an architectural gem set against Yucca Valley’s rugged desert terrain. The sliding glass doors blur the lines between the inside and outside, allowing you to enjoy home-cooked meals on the terrace, gaze at the stars, and relax in the hot tub. We also loved the enormous record collection, which features some of the host Joann’s all-time favourite tunes.
