This Palm Springs home has everything you might need for a splendid stay. Perfect Palms

Forest cabins generally have an old-world feel to them but not this modern beauty. Built out on stilts at the top of a hill and set over three floors – each with a deck to make the most of the views – this home looks out across the woods to the mountains. Set on the edge of the Pine Mountain Club community, shared local facilities include an outdoor pool, golf course and tennis courts. Inside the cabin, there's a distinct Skandi look, with white walls, plenty of natural wood and occasional bright pops of colour. Located in the historic Racquet Club Estates neighbourhood, this awesome Alexander Butterfly home – so called because it was built by the iconic Alexander Construction Company is both stylish and sophisticated, evoking the Palm Springs of yesteryear. Featuring a light-filled open plan kitchen, dining and living room – think clean lines, clerestory windows and an arty mid-century modern inspired aesthetic – courtesy of floor to ceiling sliding glass doors, this heritage home really does have it all. What’s more, the best is yet to come – you’ll also be treated to mesmerising mountain views from your sun-drenched garden complete with a private, heated, outdoor pool, hot tub, fire pit and an alfresco barbecue, lounging and dining terrace.  We don’t know about you, but that sounds like heaven to us.

Suited to socialising as well as seclusion, this captivating Californian home will have you feeling rested and relaxed in no time. Butterfly Chic

Wild Rocks is one of those homes that always appears effortlessly chic. Designed by Oller & Pejic, it’s an architectural gem set against Yucca Valley’s rugged desert terrain. The sliding glass doors blur the lines between the inside and outside, allowing you to enjoy home-cooked meals on the terrace, gaze at the stars, and relax in the hot tub. We also loved the enormous record collection, which features some of the host Joann’s all-time favourite tunes. Found just a short drive from Joshua Tree National Park, there are plenty of exciting adventures waiting for you.

Wild Rocks

Dew Drop combines relaxed West Coast living with the best of Cape Cod's design, for a beach-front home that is sure to put its guests at ease. Its position between Santa Barbara and Malibu means that it’s a little bit quieter than your standard California beach retreat, but the centre of Oxnard is still easy to reach. The gentle, nautical colour scheme perfectly matches the home's impressive views and provides a comfortable and homely space in a serene setting. Whether you want to make yourself at home in the living room and snuggle up with a great book or spend your time exploring the beach and its surroundings (Alfred provides beach chairs and body boards), Dew Drop has something for everyone. 

Dew Drop

This dreamy Malibu gem is a work of the renowned architect Pierre Koenig – and you’ll notice his masterful touches at every step. Situated right on the beachfront and surrounded by lush greenery, it would be hard to beat this home’s location. You’ll enjoy direct access to Broad Beach via an electric drawbridge, while the home’s generous outdoor areas include a swimming pool and Jacuzzi, as well as a range of private and shared balconies with unparalleled views. The inside is no less impressive, with huge glass walls and beautiful design – there’s even a private cinema room here. Do bear in mind that the home is not suitable for small children and may be challenging for guests with reduced mobility due to the many stairs. 

Malibu Dreamscape 

A hilltop cabin in a unique area of the desert, this place is nestled on its own between Pioneertown and Yucca Valley on what feels like the scenic drive through Joshua Tree National Park. The trees, rocks, and landscape just outside the doors are just as breathtaking as anything you would see in the park, except you have them all to yourself. 

There’s a wood-burning stove to keep you warm on those chill nights, while one of your musically talented friends can play a tune on the grand piano (though there’s also a Bluetooth sound system, for convenience). On the walls, you’ll find original art by the late Gerald Zeldin, and an interior so impressive it was featured in the NY Times fashion section. You can feel the history of this old mining cabin in the wood-beamed ceiling and clapboard (yet modern)  bathroom. Picture-frame windows let the sunlight stream into this boho-chic interior and let you gaze out over the endless desert before you.

This place is totally off-grid and once you’ve experienced the unique feeling of heating the outdoor hot tub with firewood as you gaze at the stars, there’s no going back.

Ranch Of The Rising Sun

Tucked in a quintessential Coachella Valley suburb, this home offers an ideal combination of indoor and outdoor living. Sunseekers will be content to spend days in the pool, but there are plenty of shady spots too – the alfresco dining terrace is perfect for sunset dinners. The interiors won't blow you away (some might find the bedroom décor a little garish), but the glass sliding doors mean you're never far from the outside. This is a great location for those wishing to have an active stay – it's a short drive to popular hiking trails in the San Jacinto Mountains, as well as the best golf resorts in the Valley. 

Desert Echoes

Big blue skies and mountain views make this home in Palm Springs an especially scenic place to stay. The outdoor area is instantly inviting, with its sun-kissed swimming pool, luxurious firepit, and shaded daybed that’s ideal for a siesta. With jaw-dropping views over Coachella's palm-spangled valley, this Palm Springs villa (designed by architect R. Denzil Lee) is an ode to mid-century vogue. The sunken living room is a sumptuous affair with its huge open fireplace, plush furnishings and floor-to-ceiling windows offering panoramic vistas over the San Jacinto mountains. Cliffside Rocks

Combining comforting mountain interiors and contemporary design, Black Arrow is a charming cabin with a little extra luxury and style. Spread across three floors, the five-bedroom home can accommodate up to ten guests, with the option of sleeping two further guests on a sofa bed in the living room. Featuring an open-plan living area, there’s an open and social feel to the space that makes it perfect for a group of friends or a family to spend quality time together, whether that’s getting cosy in front the fire, preparing delicious meals or enjoying the brand new games room featuring skeeball, arcade games, table tennis and a shuffleboard. Out on your private deck, you’ll be blown away by uninterrupted views of the landscape, the outdoor fire pit and an alfresco dining setup. When you’re ready to venture out, you’re just a ten-minute drive from Lake Arrowhead Village and all it has to offer.

Black Arrow

In a state dominated by vast open spaces, this Malibu beach ranch feels suitably large and expansive. Although it's only intended for two, the interior is more expansive than many family homes, with a long sofa stretching across one side of the living room and a kitchen with marble counters that will put a smile on the face of any home chef. 

Your host has undoubtedly taken advantage of the amount of wall space by showing off an impressive and varied art collection, which gives the home a sense of playfulness – it almost seems a shame that guests will be spending so much time outside. 

Alfresco seating looks out over a spectacular view of the Pacific Ocean, encompassing Point Dume to the Santa Barbara Channel Islands. Guests also have access to a hot tub and a barbecue, so that's the evening itinerary sorted. Nearby, you can get to Zuma Beach in just a few minutes by car, while in the other direction, Zuma Ridge trailhead is just a ten-minute walk away from your front door.
