Head out the door of this immaculate beach house and you’ll find yourself just seconds away from the golden sands of Mission Beach. Be the first to bag a spot on the sand and set up camp for the day – the host supplies beach chairs, boogie boards and towels so you’ll be well equipped. That said, you’re so close that you can easily zip back for a forgotten umbrella or some sun cream. If you’re a thrill-seeker, hop on one of the supplied beach cruisers and ride the half mile down the front to Belmont Park’s Big Dipper. As the sun starts to dip in the sky, de-sand the kids ahead of pre-dinner drinks on the outdoor sofa. There’s a barbecue, and the sleek kitchen is a pleasure to cook in, but if you’d rather somebody else did the work, then you’re within walking distance of Mission Beach’s colourful restaurants and cafes.

It sits between the bay and the ocean, boasting proximity to soft white sands and gentle basin waters in just three minutes on foot. From here, you're also within easy reach of the peninsula's shop-lined artery, Mission Boulevard, brimming with hip cafés and delectable eateries for those post-surf nibbles.

Perched on a bluff overlooking the Pacific, this home offers spectacular panoramas of crashing waves and the area's famous Bird Rock. The sleek interior doesn't disappoint, either – although the floor-to-ceiling windows guarantee the scenery is always front and centre. We love the enclosed courtyard, with its outdoor fireplace, hot tub and TV screen, and the single-level layout makes socialising a dream. But our favourite spot is by far the oceanfront main bedroom – nothing beats waking up to coastal views each morning. When you're ready to explore, you'll find a few cafes and restaurants nearby, but for more options, make the short drive to La Jolla Village. Beach-wise, Pacific Beach, Windansea and Mission beaches are also within driving distance.

Mossflower

Although this home sits directly opposite San Diego's famous Mission Bay, there are plenty of perks at the address to stop you from immediately fleeing to the boardwalks and beaches.

The swimming pool and adjoining spa are glorious spots in which to enjoy the SoCal summers, while there's also an alfresco table under a parasol as well as a cabana with an impressively equipped outdoor kitchen whenever you're in need of a little shade. Add to that a rooftop terrace that offers glorious waterfront views, as well as a couple of balconies for good measure, and you've got an address in which you barely need to head inside.

That being said, you won't be disappointed when you finally get around to doing just that. The large glass windows let in plenty of sunshine and also look out to views of leafy palm trees. We're big fans of the sleek kitchen and equally stylish bathrooms, including one with a steam shower.

There may come a point when you fancy seeing a little more of the local area and Mission Bay sits literally just around the corner, offering plentiful opportunities for swimming and watersports. The centre of San Diego and Balboa Park both take a quarter of an hour to reach in the car, too.


Man on a Mission

Walk out of your cosy home for just a few seconds and you'll reach the golden sands of Mission Beach. The beautiful coastal stretch is one of the most desired areas of San Diego, and you're right on its doorstep. 

Whether you're sharing a bottle of wine in the sandy terrace, relaxing on the sofas or enjoying a meal at the dining table, the breathtaking view of the ocean is always present. Energising and inspiring, it breathes life into every moment. 

How you spend your days by the ocean is up to you. For those of you that like a slower pace, simply laze on the sand with snacks and a drink. Take occasional dips in the water to cool off after the sun kisses your skin.

For the adrenaline junkies, the coastline is a mecca of water sports – boating, jet skiing, sailing, water skiing, kayaking and windsurfing are all available. Try your hand on each version, feeling alive as you traverse the water. 

After a day of swimming, sunbathing or sampling the sporting options, wander along the boardwalk in the evenings. Here, you'll find a plethora of enticing restaurants and shops selling chic clothing.

When it comes to Afternoon Delight, it's all about the location. Boasting delightful views over San Diego Bay, the home is just three blocks from India Street in the centre of Little Italy, where a vast range of wonderful restaurants await your visit. On top of that, Balboa Park, San Diego Zoo, Hillcrest and Downtown are all within walking distance, so you really won't be running out of things to do and see. Of course, it only helps that Afternoon Delight is also a wonderful space to call home. This modern build can accommodate up to five guests comfortably, with one of them sleeping on the double pull-down bed in the second living space. The rest of the home has been beautifully furnished and boasts modern amenities and appliances for a relaxing stay.

Afternoon Delight

With its whitewashed, clapboard exterior, giant palm trees swaying in the garden and elegant, blue furnishings, this 1930s home screams laidback beach living - and that's before we've ever started on the ocean views. A block away from the sea and a short walk to La Jolla, inside this charming home you'll find a cosy, open-plan living/dining area with warm wooden floors and a wooden ceiling, plus a gorgeous bay window looking out across at the water. The master bedroom has one of those too, as well as elegant bedding and seriously comfortable bed. But it's the location that's the star of the show here. As well as the beach and La Jolla town, you're also within striking distance of the spectacular ecological reserve, La Jolla Cove. The water here is extraordinarily clear, and on a good day you can see more than 30km. So get your snorkel ready and dive on in.

Sea Bass Cove

Picture-perfect from start to finish, this beach cottage is just a few steps away from the sandy shore of La Jolla Cove. The living room is decorated with wicker furniture and nautical touches, with four skylights making it a perfect spot to relax in a sunbeam and watch the sea swell from your window. The bedroom is equally relaxing, with a comfortable bed and a flat screen TV for lazy evenings; your only trouble will be deciding which beach to visit and which La Jolla Village restaurant to try next. This home is best suited for two people, but if you wanted to bring some friends or children, the sofa bed in the living area offers two additional sleep options.

This exquisite home has to be seen to be believed. It’s a beachfront home with everything you could wish for right at your fingertips, and some luxuries you may not have even imagined. The home can be found in La Jolla, directly across from Windansea Beach, and looking out over surfers’ favourite Big Rock. The views are incredible from almost every angle of the home, whether you’re in the lounge that’s been designed to offer a 180-degree vista of the ocean and the shoreline, or you’re cooking in the outdoor kitchen on the roof deck – from that elevation you can look forward to a 360-degree panorama. 

You can stroll out of your door and straight onto the beach, and return to rinse off in the outdoor shower before plunging into the pool. The heated pool and spa sit at the front of the home so boast ocean views. Sip Champagne in the spa while breathing in the sea air and hearing the waves crash ashore – absolute bliss. 

In the evenings, move up to the roof deck. Cook up a feast in the outdoor kitchen – or book a private chef to do the hard work while you doze on one of the loungers – then dine under the stars. Later on, you might curl up by one of the fire features, perhaps using the telescope for a spot of stargazing. 

If you’re anything like us, you’ll find it hard to leave this superb home. If you do fancy exploring afield, it takes just twelve minutes to drive into La Jolla Village, where you’ll find world-class restaurants and some top-notch boutiques.
