That said, you’re so close that you can easily zip back for a forgotten umbrella or some sun cream. If you’re a thrill-seeker, hop on one of the supplied beach cruisers and ride the half mile down the front to Belmont Park’s Big Dipper. As the sun starts to dip in the sky, de-sand the kids ahead of pre-dinner drinks on the outdoor sofa. There’s a barbecue, and the sleek kitchen is a pleasure to cook in, but if you’d rather somebody else did the work, then you’re within walking distance of Mission Beach’s colourful restaurants and cafes.

While the beach is hard to tear yourself away from, we'd spare some time to explore nearby golf courses, shops, and the good old Giant Dipper Roller Coaster at the Belmont Amusement Park – all just a short walk away. At the end of the day, you can return to your modern-Victorian home for a soak in the tub and a barbecue in the private courtyard.

Take a paddle board to the surf – there’s one provided – or cycle along the peninsula using one of the free bikes. If you need a rest, take a moment to pause on the golden sands of South Mission Beach and soak up the rays. Back at home you can soak your muscles in the shared spa pool, before refuelling with a barbecue on the beach or a bite from one of nearby Mission Boulevard's hip cafés.

If you're partial to dazzling coastal views, this home in Mission Beach will leave your jaw on the floor. It sits between the bay and the ocean, boasting proximity to soft white sands and gentle basin waters in just three minutes on foot. From here, you're also within easy reach of the peninsula's shop-lined artery, Mission Boulevard, brimming with hip cafés and delectable eateries for those post-surf nibbles.

Belmont Park is ready to keep you company for hours, but we especially recommend seeing it at night when all the lights make it feel extra magical. 

Spending time at home will likely result in burgers grilling on the barbecue outside – stay out there for long after, even as the sun begins to dip, to bask in the holiday feeling. The fireplace is great for colder nights where you can enjoy takeout around the fire before playing a round of Monopoly. Hit the boardwalk on balmier evenings and if you happen to end up with a taco in one hand and a frozen margarita in the other, well, we call that a good night.

Located close to the seafront boardwalk, with volleyball courts, a playground, and calm waters nearby, it’s a great choice for families. It’s worth noting that this villa is only available with five bedrooms and four bathrooms during the summer – at other times it’s rented as a four-bedroom, three-bathroom home that sleeps ten.

Those who see being described as 'meticulous' as something to be proud of will adore this three-storey home in San Diego's North Park neighbourhood. Every component has been thoughtfully considered, from the manicured gardens upon entrance and the colourful modern furniture in the living room, to the sleek kitchen bathed in natural light from the windows running along one wall. Even the exterior is pleasing to look at, the clean lines and black panelling making it stand out as a pillar of modernity in the locale. That being said, you won't feel as if you're in a showroom, thanks to the bountiful amount of space dedicated to relaxation — our favourite has to be the balcony on the first floor that puts you at tree-top level. The location is superb, too. Balboa Park — which holds San Diego Zoo — can be reached in under fifteen minutes on foot, while you can drive to Coronado Beach in ten minutes.

Perched within walking distance of South Mission Beach, this beautiful beach house is a coastal bolthole the whole family will fall in love with. Set over two levels, this place welcomes you to soak up the San Diego sun in style. 
If al fresco dining is your thing, then you’re in luck. With a ton of outdoor dining and lounge space to both the front and back of the home, this place is perfect for those that love being out in the open air. Float the day away with an iced Americano in hand and get set to kick back in style.
We’re sure the Californian sun will tempt you outside, but if a cosy evening is calling your name, the soothing coastal decor and sumptuous leather sofas serve the ideal spot for family movie nights. 
In need of some ‘me–time’? The balcony deck nestled between the two bedrooms on the first floor was made for quiet moments spent watching the world go by, or with your head buried deep in the pages of a good book. 
For a full day of fun, games and brightly–lit arcades, make a beeline for Belmont Park, just a ten–minute walk away. Alternatively, if you feel like showing off your sporty side, head to the seafront courts for a game of beach volleyball.

Although this home sits directly opposite San Diego's famous Mission Bay, there are plenty of perks at the address to stop you from immediately fleeing to the boardwalks and beaches.

The swimming pool and adjoining spa are glorious spots in which to enjoy the SoCal summers, while there's also an alfresco table under a parasol as well as a cabana with an impressively equipped outdoor kitchen whenever you're in need of a little shade. Add to that a rooftop terrace that offers glorious waterfront views, as well as a couple of balconies for good measure, and you've got an address in which you barely need to head inside.

That being said, you won't be disappointed when you finally get around to doing just that. The large glass windows let in plenty of sunshine and also look out to views of leafy palm trees. We're big fans of the sleek kitchen and equally stylish bathrooms, including one with a steam shower.

There may come a point when you fancy seeing a little more of the local area and Mission Bay sits literally just around the corner, offering plentiful opportunities for swimming and watersports. The centre of San Diego and Balboa Park both take a quarter of an hour to reach in the car, too.


Man on a Mission

Perfectly positioned on the famous Mission Beach boardwalk, this location is hard to beat if you’re looking to stay right on the waterfront. With cosy private terraces and an outdoor grill area that invites you to dine alfresco while you breathe in the fresh sea air, it's the outside areas of this home that steal the show (though the inside is just as well executed). When it comes to Afternoon Delight, it's all about the location. Boasting delightful views over San Diego Bay, the home is just three blocks from India Street in the centre of Little Italy, where a vast range of wonderful restaurants await your visit. On top of that, Balboa Park, San Diego Zoo, Hillcrest and Downtown are all within walking distance, so you really won't be running out of things to do and see. Of course, it only helps that Afternoon Delight is also a wonderful space to call home. This modern build can accommodate up to five guests comfortably, with one of them sleeping on the double pull-down bed in the second living space. Perched on a bluff overlooking the Pacific, this home offers spectacular panoramas of crashing waves and the area's famous Bird Rock. The sleek interior doesn't disappoint, either – although the floor-to-ceiling windows guarantee the scenery is always front and centre. We love the enclosed courtyard, with its outdoor fireplace, hot tub and TV screen, and the single-level layout makes socialising a dream. But our favourite spot is by far the oceanfront main bedroom – nothing beats waking up to coastal views each morning. When you're ready to explore, you'll find a few cafes and restaurants nearby, but for more options, make the short drive to La Jolla Village. Beach-wise, Pacific Beach, Windansea and Mission beaches are also within driving distance.
