Perched on a bluff overlooking the Pacific, this home offers spectacular panoramas of crashing waves and the area's famous Bird Rock. The sleek interior doesn't disappoint, either – although the floor-to-ceiling windows guarantee the scenery is always front and centre. We love the enclosed courtyard, with its outdoor fireplace, hot tub and TV screen, and the single-level layout makes socialising a dream. But our favourite spot is by far the oceanfront main bedroom – nothing beats waking up to coastal views each morning. When you're ready to explore, you'll find a few cafes and restaurants nearby, but for more options, make the short drive to La Jolla Village. Beach-wise, Pacific Beach, Windansea and Mission beaches are also within driving distance.

While the interior may lack some wow factor, its rooftop terrace perfectly complements the area's gorgeous warm weather. The proximity to the beach is a real bonus here too - the nearest is a five-minute walk, while further along you'll find many more. And if you are travelling with family, the San Diego Zoo and Legoland are just a short drive away.

Known for its pristine beaches and optimal climate, San Diego is already a gem on the west coast of America. The fact that this beach cottage can also be found in the Mission Bay area makes the trip out to San Diego even more of a must. Ideal for a family stay or reunion of friends, think of this home as a portal to all things spectacular. The beach, for one, is a quick walk away, and so are a number of great restaurants and markets. Belmont Park is ready to keep you company for hours, but we especially recommend seeing it at night when all the lights make it feel extra magical. 

Spending time at home will likely result in burgers grilling on the barbecue outside – stay out there for long after, even as the sun begins to dip, to bask in the holiday feeling. The fireplace is great for colder nights where you can enjoy takeout around the fire before playing a round of Monopoly. Hit the boardwalk on balmier evenings and if you happen to end up with a taco in one hand and a frozen margarita in the other, well, we call that a good night.

This exquisite home has to be seen to be believed. It’s a beachfront home with everything you could wish for right at your fingertips, and some luxuries you may not have even imagined. The home can be found in La Jolla, directly across from Windansea Beach, and looking out over surfers’ favourite Big Rock. The views are incredible from almost every angle of the home, whether you’re in the lounge that’s been designed to offer a 180-degree vista of the ocean and the shoreline, or you’re cooking in the outdoor kitchen on the roof deck – from that elevation you can look forward to a 360-degree panorama. 

You can stroll out of your door and straight onto the beach, and return to rinse off in the outdoor shower before plunging into the pool. The heated pool and spa sit at the front of the home so boast ocean views. Sip Champagne in the spa while breathing in the sea air and hearing the waves crash ashore – absolute bliss. 

In the evenings, move up to the roof deck. Cook up a feast in the outdoor kitchen – or book a private chef to do the hard work while you doze on one of the loungers – then dine under the stars. Later on, you might curl up by one of the fire features, perhaps using the telescope for a spot of stargazing.

The home was originally built in the 1920s and has been lovingly remodelled – it retains that historic charm but is modern and comfortable, with all that you might need for a beachside stay. We’d be dividing our time between the sweet little patio, which is a lovely suntrap, and the various cosy corners with ocean views. The living room just calls out for evenings spent together playing cards, particularly if the weather turns chilly and you can light the fire. 

You’ll likely spend a lot of your time on the beach – it takes at most one minute to walk there. Slightly further afield, La Jolla Cove is seven minutes away by car and the thrills of Belmont Park are just eleven minutes away. La Jolla Village is a treasure trove of fine dining and exclusive boutiques, and it’s twelve minutes away by car. 

When the sun starts to dip in the sky, slip outside to the communal courtyard to take in the breath-taking sunset. Perhaps mix up a cocktail or two for the occasion – you’re on your holiday, after all. 


Ocean Roar

Although this home sits directly opposite San Diego's famous Mission Bay, there are plenty of perks at the address to stop you from immediately fleeing to the boardwalks and beaches.

The swimming pool and adjoining spa are glorious spots in which to enjoy the SoCal summers, while there's also an alfresco table under a parasol as well as a cabana with an impressively equipped outdoor kitchen whenever you're in need of a little shade. Add to that a rooftop terrace that offers glorious waterfront views, as well as a couple of balconies for good measure, and you've got an address in which you barely need to head inside.

That being said, you won't be disappointed when you finally get around to doing just that. The large glass windows let in plenty of sunshine and also look out to views of leafy palm trees. We're big fans of the sleek kitchen and equally stylish bathrooms, including one with a steam shower.

There may come a point when you fancy seeing a little more of the local area and Mission Bay sits literally just around the corner, offering plentiful opportunities for swimming and watersports. The centre of San Diego and Balboa Park both take a quarter of an hour to reach in the car, too.

Climb the stairs from street level and step into the main open-plan living area and kitchen. Here, you'll find a space blessed with high ceilings and a wall of glass with breathtaking views that leads directly onto a vast twenty-six-foot balcony running the length of the house. Pour yourself a welcome glass of Prosecco from the fridge and relax as you gaze out at the ocean and the planes coming in to land at the airport. Whether you're in town for work or play, location is key, and you couldn't be better placed here – just minutes from San Diego International Airport, Little Italy, Downtown Gaslamp, and the area's beaches. That said, there are plenty of wonderful cafes and historic neighbourhoods within walking distance, so you don't have to rely on four wheels all the time. And even when you're looking to travel further afield, it's a short stroll to the trolley stop, which can whisk you to the Gaslamp Quarter. Alternatively, take the COASTER train north to chic beach towns like Solana Beach, Encinitas and Carlsbad. At the end of a packed day, head through to the soothing bedrooms, which are decorated in neutral tones that contrast nicely with the dark wooden furnishings, while the comfortable beds make getting up in the morning a struggle.

This 1960s mid-century style condominium has amazing harbour views that are utterly picturesque at sunset. Ideally placed, this apartment is close to the best beach in San Diego according to locals, as it is just a short one-minute walk to Bonita Cove following a path down to the ocean and boardwalk. Here, you can play a game of beach volleyball or simply enjoy the serene ocean sounds and clean, golden sands. 

Meanwhile, the famous Mission Beach is only a seven-minute walk away, following a charming beach path that is located just outside your front door. This is a popular spot for water sports. Plus, Mission Boulevard is lined with cafés and eateries for your lunchtime needs, while, other cafés, restaurants, ice cream shops, and even a karaoke bar are within a ten-minute walk from your door. 

Belmont Park, San Diego’s historic oceanfront amusement park – featuring the Giant Dipper Roller Coaster, Liberty Carousel, and Tilt-a-Wheel – can be reached within six minutes by foot. Close enough to walk to from this condo but far enough away that the sounds and crowds won’t disturb you at home while you are admiring the stunning views.
