Even though this home has a bit of a New England feel to it, once you step outside, you will be in no doubt that it's in Santa Monica. It’s on a hidden walkway off the main road — which gives it a sense of privacy — and the beach is only two minutes' walk away. The Pier and Muscle Beach only takes ten on foot, too. Back inside, the interior has been designed to feel beachy but in a way you’d associate more with the East Coast — think vaulted ceilings, fireplaces and soft pastels. The huge kitchen will be a highlight for those with culinary talents and if the weather's nice — which we're going to wager it will be — you can serve up dinner outside on the private patio. Better still, there's a barbecue for grilling up some meaty flavours to grateful guests.

This is a show-stopping Tuscan villa is in the heart of Santa Monica. It’s just a ten-minute walk in either direction to the beach or downtown. But the truth is, you may never want to leave as this place was designed for entertaining. The entire, high-ceilinged basement level is dedicated to hedonism, with a cocktail bar, wine vaults and home theatre. A gym and steam room mean you can keep up your exercise schedule between indulgences. There are plenty more places for the group to spread out – in the grand lounge by the fireplace, in the sunny reading room in the garden, or the family snug around the TV. If work calls, there’s an executive-style study with everything you need in a personal office, and there’s even a separate study space for kids with computers, a blackboard and a writing desk. The home’s courtyard is a fabulous set-up up, with a heated salt-water swimming pool at its centre and loads of seating space to enjoy a tipple or full meal outside. It’s hard to top this home for luxury in Santa Monica.

This chic home in Santa Monica will have you unwinding in no time with its relaxed Californian vibe of whitewashed walls, surfboards and natural finishes. There’s a couple of living spaces to spread out in – perfect for family or friends. The star of the show, though, is the garden – we adore it. There’s a barbecue, a badminton net, a pavilion, and an enormous lawn to have fun on. And if that wasn’t enough to do outdoors, Sorrento Beach is just over a ten-minute walk at the end of the road, or cycle there on the bikes provided. Have a saunter there with the surfboards or simply top up your tan on the warm sands – utter bliss. After all that fresh sea air, relax by the fire pit in the shaded outdoor lounge or cosy up in the teepee with its faux fur cushions and throws for an evening under the stars.

It's an open and inviting space with room to spread out both indoor and out. Just bear in mind, it's a lived in home and feels like such, so you mustn't expect perfection. Situated in Santa Monica, you're close to the beach and 3rd Street Promenade, with plenty to do right around your doorstep.

This classic Venice bungalow is all about those Californian good vibes. Dating back to the 1920s the home echoes the bohemian nature of the neighbourhood, with an authentic, laid-back feel and an eclectic mix of vintage furniture. Inside, there are period features like the pretty arched window and the wood floor, along with a fully equipped kitchen and two bedrooms. But it's the garden that's the real selling point here. Green, secluded and quirky in its own uniquely Venice way, it's a place to escape with your friends and family. Eat at the outdoor dining table, light the fire pit and sit out under the string lights at night. In the morning, grab one of the home's bikes and cycle down to the beach, or bring your boards and head out for a day surfing. A converted garage provides an extra studio bedroom for two in the garden, which can be rented along with the main house. A half-hour stroll from Abbot Kinney Boulevard and all its shops, restaurants and galleries, there’s always something to do in this buzzing part of LA.

Your attentive hosts have provided all the beach basics too – bags, chairs and beach towels. There’s a zen calm to the home, where a Baddha stands in prayer and sprouting grass adds a touch of natural green to the living room. Though you’re on the edge of the city here, big windows show off a view of trees. There’s a quiet little roof terrace, where greenery creeps over the wall and two comfy chairs provide the perfect cocktail spot. Up the spiral staircase, both bedrooms are decorated in the ink-black and parchment white of Japanese zen and the master has a desk in the sunny window.

There isn't a pool here, but the roof terrace makes up for that. You can unwind with a glass of wine, gather by the fire, and strike up the barbecue for an alfresco meal as the sun goes down. Indoors, you'll find three floors of living space. The main suite is on the top floor, with a soaking tub for extra relaxation. That's all our boxes ticked.

Los Angeles is renowned as being one of the most exciting cities in the world and this apartment reflects the style and swagger that happens beyond its four walls.

As well as enjoying copious amounts of natural light from the windows, there's a sleek glamour to the interior design, with a tasteful selection of furnishings and light fixtures, plus a kitchen that's gleamingly bright and a treat to cook in – providing you actually enjoy cooking, obviously. The balcony off the living room offers both somewhere to cool off on warm afternoons and a view of palm trees and local rooftops, while you also have the option of hunkering down next to the fireplace during the cooler months.

You might be happy to hear that the local neighbourhood is pretty quiet, but there are livelier parts not too far away – ten minutes in the car will get you either to Santa Monica Beach or the refined streets of Beverly Hills in the other direction.

This Venice home is an absolute delight. The proportions and layout are lovely, it's flooded with natural light, has great eco-credentials and it has a private and peaceful outdoor space. Stylishly decorated with a mid-century modern feel, and just a five-minute drive away from the beach, this place is pretty easy to love. Its recent redesign has made it sustainable – there's solar power and an osmosis water filtration system – and created a guesthouse we'd be thrilled to call home for a while. Sit in front of the gas flame fireplace, rustle up a meal in the kitchen (it's a bit retro but we love it) and sit out under the stars in your pretty garden – the soothing sound of the water feature will soon have you ready for bed. Just a short drive or a thirty-minute walk from the beach, you'll probably be heading down there most days. Santa Monica is very close by and it's just a twenty-five-minute drive from Hollywood. You'll also be able to stroll to some of the best bars and restaurants in LA on Abbot Kinney Boulevard and Rose Avenue.

We fell in love with this home based on the location alone, even before crossing the threshold. Just a stone's throw from the beach, you can easily jump in the ocean before breakfast. You're conveniently located just one block from Main St, where you'll find indie boutiques, charming cafes and Michelin-recognised restaurants. The home itself is equally breathtaking – we adore the double-height living space with a sea view. It's exceptionally stylish, brimming with character. The amount of art hanging on the walls would put some galleries to shame. It's definitely a home that makes you want to know its owners – a truly unique place to stay and one that's ready for its Instagram close-up.

Sweeping views await at this penthouse apartment. It's perched right by the water in Marina Del Rey, and thanks to floor-to-ceiling glass walls, you'll be treated to non-stop ocean vistas no matter the time of day. A private balcony is ideal for alfresco sundowners and watching the hustle and bustle of the marina. Head inside, and you can lounge in the bright living area or gaze further afield with the telescope. There are a few quirks here, though. The main bedroom is open to the living space below, and the blinds don't block out the sunlight. But, with Venice Beach a five-minute drive away and panoramas aplenty, it's an excellent option for a getaway on the coast.
