Fitting more than ten guests into a single home is tricky, so this estate is comprised of three — all luxurious and equipped with everything you might need for a great stay. It's situated in the middle of California's wine country, making it easy to visit the nearby wineries to sample the local vintages. For those who prefer staying in and relaxing, there's plenty to do at home too. You'll find the sparkling private swimming pool surrounded by plenty of sun loungers, where you can splash around or catch some rays. There's also a barbecue area and a fire pit, ideal for keeping your guests cosy and well-fed after dark. Plus, there's plenty to explore in the sprawling grounds – including your own vineyard, fruit orchard, and even an equestrian centre. It's hard not to form lifelong memories when you're in such a special place – we think you'll love sharing your days in this idyllic slice of California with your family or friends.

On arrival you’ll discover an elegant Spanish colonial-style home, sprawling out luxuriously across one level. Slide open its French doors to reveal interiors worthy of a design magazine cover – vaulted ceilings, lofty bedrooms (each with their own bathroom and patio), and an achingly-cool living space that begs to be lounged around in. 

Carrying on outside, through magnificent gardens, you’ll discover a contemporary two-storey pool house that brings this place right into the 21st century, with one of the most well-equipped gyms we ever did see. But the star of the show has to be the pool and gardens. With 360-degree mountain vistas, soaring palm trees, lush lawns, and hummingbirds busy going about their day, there is no better place to be. Start the day with a few lengths in the pool and soak in the spa, before settling down on one of the many sun decks to catch some rays. 

When it’s time to rustle up a meal, fire up the barbecue in the impressive outdoor dining area, while friends gather around the fire pit. Or let a private chef take over in the gourmet kitchen, complete with a wine fridge and built-in coffee maker to cover off all the essentials. And should you be tempted to stray from this desert retreat, you’ll find downtown Palm Springs a mere fifteen minutes drive away. Though why you’d ever want to leave is anyone’s guess.

Wild Rocks is one of those homes that always appears effortlessly chic. Designed by Oller & Pejic, it’s an architectural gem set against Yucca Valley’s rugged desert terrain. The sliding glass doors blur the lines between the inside and outside, allowing you to enjoy home-cooked meals on the terrace, gaze at the stars, and relax in the hot tub. We also loved the enormous record collection, which features some of the host Joann’s all-time favourite tunes. Found just a short drive from Joshua Tree National Park, there are plenty of exciting adventures waiting for you.

Wild Rocks

This chic home is an excellent example of mid-century modern architecture, set just two blocks away from iconic Palm Canyon Drive. The effortlessly cool interiors give a nod to the past, with antique style patterned rugs, statement lighting and unique artworks on the walls. Outside, there's a glittering swimming pool, lined with bright white sun loungers and tangerine parasols, where you can take a dip with the dramatic backdrop of the San Jacinto Mountains. If you fancy getting active, take a hike up to the peaks, or hop on the aerial tramway to avoid breaking a sweat – either way, you'll be treated to jaw-dropping views over Coachella Valley. Come home for a sundowner on the terrace, before stretching out on the curved green sofas with a classic Hollywood movie.

Craving California

Escape to this remote studio sanctuary and reconnect with mother nature. This is more than just an unpretentious cabin in the desert – this is a home that invites you to let go of life's complications and to instead find your roots in nature and embrace the bear necessities – pretty much in keeping with the Joshua Tree area surrounding it. The highlight of this home is, of course, soaking in the granite bathtub with water supplied from the mineral-rich hot spring. Take this moment to absorb the water's healing properties and nourish your body. Staying here is also about spending days and nights on the porch, breathing in the clean air with sunrise stretches, daily meditation and stargazing in the desert evening's clear night skies which – in our opinion – is some of the best stargazing on the planet. Inside the design is simple with hand-dyed indigo bedding and touches of local art – the sleek desert motif is clear, and a perfect complement to adventures and hikes in the natural landscape all around. Take the half-hour drive to Joshua Tree National Park, and don't forget to take your camera with you – we can vouch for the sublime vistas.

This fun desert home conjures up a mix of vintage hippy culture and the modern Boho chic style. Renovated and enlarged from a late-1950s villa, this place has a history. It was built when Landers and its Mojave Desert setting first became a place of pilgrimage for the original hippies. Inside, there's a welcoming, open-plan feel with an eclectic collection of decorative odds and ends. This is desert living, so outside there's the firepit table with distant mountain views, a barbecue grill and a traditional cowboy tub for getting clean in the open air. For a town of just 2,000 people, there’s plenty of things to do nearby. Try sonic healing sessions at the circular Integratron or marvel at the Giant Rock – a seven-storey-high boulder. Drink local brews from the Landers Brewing Company, explore Joshua Tree National Park and do some next-level stargazing.

Forest cabins generally have an old-world feel to them but not this modern beauty. Built out on stilts at the top of a hill and set over three floors – each with a deck to make the most of the views – this home looks out across the woods to the mountains. Set on the edge of the Pine Mountain Club community, shared local facilities include an outdoor pool, golf course and tennis courts. Inside the cabin, there's a distinct Skandi look, with white walls, plenty of natural wood and occasional bright pops of colour. A log burner up on a brick-built hearth is the centrepiece of the double-height living space, while large picture windows and sliding doors make sure you see your surroundings from every seat in the house. There's a modern kitchen and an office area if you have to get some work done while you're away, and a children's playroom – making it perfect for families. Choose a spot to sit outside with a cool beer, or head up to the barbecue deck to use the grill. And after a long hike on the trails, steam away your aches and pains in the home's sauna.

Escapes to this Yucca Valley home are guaranteed to be unforgettable. With endless views of the Mojave Desert, guests can spend hours watching pink sunsets from the hot tub, dining alfresco against the serrated silhouette, picking out constellations from a sky full of stars and toasting marshmallows over the fire pit. Inside, designer furniture and poured concrete floors feel extra stylish, and the bedrooms with luxury mattresses, percale cotton bedding and original artwork demand long lie-ins. Put an album on the record player as made-from-scratch meals cook away in the up-to-the-minute kitchen, and when dinner’s demolished, clear the plates ready for an evening of board games. After practising yoga on the patio with the sunrise, mornings are to be spent exploring; pull on your hiking boots and make your way to the Joshua Tree National Park, a twenty-minute drive from the property. Stop off in Yucca Valley’s Old Town on your way back for a bite to eat and a well-earned, ice-cold drink.

This villa subtly blends Mediterranean and modernist influences. Built for cloudless skies, this home uses geometrical shapes and sharp lines to emphasise light and shadow. The stylish back garden is a sun trap, and there are enough deckchairs to go around, so no one will be fighting for the best space. For those feeling the midday heat, you can even soak in rays on built-in pool beds or simply swim off any stickiness. Make lunch in the outdoor kitchen and enjoy it alfresco, while looking out over the breathtaking Santa Rosa mountains. The interior is just as stylish, blending sleek monochrome tones. The spacious open-plan living space has enough cosy corners for a large party, and you can easily find your own private spot to relax. With a pool table, miniature putting green and TV room, there’s ample opportunity to entertain the children (and adults). Once you’ve exhausted these activities, head into La Quinta or visit the closeby PGA West Golf Course.

After a morning lounging by the saltwater pool, choose from the many hiking trails in your immediate vicinity, hop in the car and you'll be there in around five minutes. The Indian Canyons, comprising three individual canyons, is a spectacular expanse of mountains and desert – whether you're up for a hefty walk, a picnic, or even a quick snap for social media, you couldn't be better located.

Like a spaceship that's just landed in the desert, this home is an extraordinary stay. Surrounded by hundreds of windmills, the rugged San Jacinto mountains and expansive valley views, the most dominating element of this home is dome-shaped annexe with expansive windows offering unbeatable, panoramic views. Inside, the owners have gone to town with the otherworldly theme. In the kitchen, sleek metal kitchen countertops like the exterior of a rocket ship are paired back by warm brick walls. In the living room, egg shaped chairs sit opposite a honeycombed bookshelf, with a wood-and-metal floating spiral staircase that leads up to the loft bedroom. All three bedrooms have deluxe double beds, luxurious bathrooms with walk-in showers, and uninterrupted desert views. Joshua Tree National Park - and its miles of remote hiking routes - is at your fingertips, or if you're ready to re-enter reality, Downtown Palm Springs, with its glitzy shops and trendy restaurants, is a short drive away.

We’re willing to bet that some good-natured individual watched a rainbow materialise in the sky, grabbed a handful of the resulting magic, threw it in a gift box wrapped in serenity and released it into this home. With eye-catching custom murals and generous touches of blue all around, you’ll find yourself in an oasis as exuberant as the outdoors of Palm Springs that Hollywood stars can’t seem to get enough of. 

The home is a mid-century modern delight, and you’ll find a library with a lounge just for reading, a pool terrace dotted with energising palm trees and sensational views of the mountains, and a games room made for indulging in some friendly competition with your fellow guests. You won't want to leave but if you ever decide to, an adventure is always calling out in the Indian Canyons and you’re a five-minute drive from the eclectic mix of shops (everything from candy shops to record stores) in Downtown Palm Springs.

Full of personalised little touches and less than ten minutes from downtown Santa Barbara, this modern coastal cottage is an Instagrammer's dream. From the outside, it takes inspiration from industrial-style shipping containers, while inside the home's muted palette and minimalist design induces a peaceful serenity. A couple or solo traveller will find it delivers a faultless experience – from the brand-new, bespoke kitchen to an always-perfect temperature, thanks to the air conditioning. Although when the weather is mild, we recommend opening the French doors and allowing indoor and outdoor spaces to become one. Sit out on your private yard, sip your morning coffee and plan the day ahead. Hop on one of the beach cruisers and feel your feet in the sand in just a few minutes, then head to Coast Village Road for the best restaurants and a spot of shopping.

Experience the history of old town, La Quinta first hand at this casita complex. The protected indoor/outdoor dining space with white-wash walls, wicker lampshades and Mexican blankets paint a scene out of an old western. A private pool and spa is shared between the two casitas for families and friends to come together for some fun in the sun, or an evening barbecue. Bikes are also available should you want to make a short cycle to the shops and restaurants of La Quinta. Inside, the rustic white walls, exposed beams and wooden flooring continue the historic feel. Though the sleek, stainless steel appliances in the otherwise rustic kitchen are distinctly 21st-century, there is no escaping the old-world charm of this place. Having said that, no one is leaving you totally disconnected, with modern comforts of wifi, Apple TV, and bluetooth sound systems. It is up to you whether you want to switch off here. Old or new, this is the best of both.

Vast sliding walls of glass blur the lines between indoors and out in this spacious, mid-century home, where glorious Palm Springs sunshine and gorgeous mountain views steal the show.

Inside, an open lounge is centred around a stylish fireplace with chic period furniture. The dining area is separated from the kitchen by a breakfast bar, beyond which you'll find everything you need to cook up a feast for the whole family.

There's even more living space outside, inviting you to spend sun-soaked days under cloudless skies. The kidney-shaped pool offers a chance to cool off from the heat of the day in between sun lounger sessions, while those who prefer to stick to the shade can lounge on the outdoor sofa under the bright blue parasol. 

The adjacent hot tub makes for romantic nights staring up at the stars, followed by cosying up around the fire pit to dry off before dinner. Tuck into sumptuous homemade meals fresh from the grill, or bring in the professionals for restaurant-quality food in the comfort of your home. Alternatively, stroll half an hour into central Palm Springs to experience the dynamic desert dining scene.

Silent Cinema

Pow! This Mid-Century Modern house certainly has visual impact. From kitsch gold taps in the bathroom to the African nick-nacks adorning every surface in the living room, its style is best described as “more is more”. Every care has been taken to preserve this home in its original 1950s glamour, when its owner ran the famed Chi Chi Lounge, frequented by celebrity clientele who’d pop over to his house for Sunday brunch. You can easily imagine Frank Sinatra propped up at the private bar in the lounge, or sipping a cocktail by the kidney-shaped pool outside. Why not channel Ol’ Blue Eyes with a singsong around the piano after a day exploring all that Palm Springs has to offer. The restaurants and shops of East Palm Canyon Drive are within walking distance and it's a short drive to downtown.  

After Hours

This enormous mansion is less than a half-hour drive from Coachella Valley, Joshua Tree National Park, Salton Sea and Palm Springs, but to be honest, you could have the stay of a lifetime here without even leaving the property. In-home spa and massage services are available to help you fully unwind. It’s a veritable palace inside, with stone columns and tiles floors keeping things cool. Myriad lounges and seating areas are spread across the open living area with a dedicated movie nook, a grand circular lounge beneath the domed ceiling and a banquet-sized table for the group to dine. You don’t need to go to Vegas to roll the dice, either – within these walls, you’ll find a full casino-style set-up including snooker, foosball and a poker table to challenge your guests to a game or ten. 

Play your cards right, and you’ll spend your stay drifting from decadent interiors to the sunny gardens, which are no less opulent – dive into the magnificent pool, soak in the integrated hot tub, host a barbecue to remember in the huge dining and grilling area, and spend a night watching the sun go down in the outdoor bar. Our favourite spot might have to be the teepee-style outdoor lounge, which adds a touch of boho charm to an otherwise opulent playground. The world is your playground here, and we’d bet good money on you wanting to return again and again.
