If you're staying in a home situated on the Sardinian coastline, it would be a crying shame if the address didn't have an outdoor spot from which to admire the majesty of the local landscape. Thankfully, this apartment in the north of the island really delivers on the front.

Not only is there a large sun terrace with 180-degree views of the Tyrrhenian Sea and Tavolara island, but there are two further verandahs with alfresco tables and a well-kept garden. There are pleasant views out through the home's windows too, which, thanks to the elevated position, also bring in lots of natural light. This asset works particularly well with the bright and contemporary design throughout, from the white walls and glossy kitchen surfaces to the rather striking head sculpture in the living space.

When it comes to seeing a little more of the local area, there's a rock beach only eighty metres from the home and the sandy Spiaggia Mare Rocce is two hundred metres' walk. There's a decent choice of restaurants in the surrounding town of Pittulongu, while you can find a wider choice, plus some archaeological ruins, in the city of Olbia, just over fifteen minutes' drive away.

You’ll need a car to get around and for local amenities in Golfo Aranci – exploring the island further is a must.

Featuring picturesque scenery – best viewed from the private terrace, this apartment offers a boutique hotel-like experience, with the added privacy of having your own cooking and dining facilities. While the swimming pool is shared with other guests staying in neighbouring apartments, the complex is quiet and residential and there are thirty apartments in total on-site. Separated into two buildings, three of the double-bedroom suites are located in the annexe. Meanwhile, the other two bedrooms are found alongside the living area and dining area in the main building. Its central location, set close to the town’s historic centre crammed with wine bars and a restaurant-lined plaza, will come in handy as there’s no kitchen at this home. It’s also worth noting there’s no living space to speak of. But with an impressive private balcony overlooking the island of Tavolara and the Gulf of Olbia for morning coffees and evening drinks, we don’t think you’ll mind.

While the apartment may not be the most luxurious in our collection, the practical space works well for a family or two couples and you’ll have sea views from the private terrace and balcony. Further afield, the coastal town of Golfo Aranci, with its picturesque harbour and selection of bars and restaurants, is a 25 minute walk or a short drive away.

Located on Sardinia’s northeastern coast, this functional yet comfortable villa with Tyrrhenian Sea views suits a family or group of friends. If you’d like to do some exploring, Quarta Beach is a short walk from your doorstep and the heart of Golfo Aranci, reached in around five minutes by car, plays host to fantastic seafood restaurants.

You’ll find this unfussy villa in northeast Sardinia, around 500 metres from Le Saline Beach and 11 kilometres from the city of Olbia, home to the medieval San Simplicio basilica and a palm-fringed waterfront. Back at the abode, two living areas provide plenty of space for the whole group to stretch out and the garden is the ideal spot to relax in the sunshine or shade. Granted, there’s no swimming pool here, but with the coast so easily accessible we don’t think you’ll mind too much.

This wonderful villa is located in the north of Sardinia, just a stone's throw away from the rugged coast. It's the perfect place to enjoy a relaxing getaway on this sunny island, the second largest in the Mediterranean Sea. 

The spacious home is actually composed of the main house and a separate outbuilding, meaning that all guests can enjoy some peace and quiet. You can flop down inside with a good book to hide from the heat, but we think you'll want to spend most of your time enjoying the fabulous outdoor space. Follow the path, and you'll find a chill-out zone, where you can relax with a glass of Pinot Grigio as you admire the sea views. And, there's even a sparkling swimming pool – take a dip before refueling with an alfresco meal cooked on the grill. 

If you're taking a boat with you, you can arrange to moor it at the Marina di Sa Jaga, just a short walk away. When you fancy a beach day, hop in the car and drive over to Spiaggia di Marinella for a day on the sand. Elsewhere away from home, the crystal-blue waters of Golfo Aranci are 15 kilometres away and the beach of Liscia Ruja – one of the jewels of the Costa Smeralda – is 14 kilometres.

Located in Porto Istana, on the northeastern coast of Sardinia, this terracotta-toned home is a slice of botanical beauty with its palm and cactus-filled garden and its idyllic coastal setting. 

Inside, exposed beams, Provençal yellow walls, comfortable furnishings and floor-to-ceiling windows create a warm welcome in the living room, which gives way to the shaded patio area outside. When you’re not spending time in your private oasis, sandy Porto Istana beach is just a five-minute drive away. The sea views are stunning, and the home has been designed to make the most of them. A large terrace leads from the living room, so your eye is drawn to the water from almost every angle – including from the private heated swimming pool. This is a great home for a large group as there’s plenty of space. It’s also been fitted with a stair lift so can accommodate those with reduced mobility. You’ll need to pay for your linen though.

This villa is an excellent spot in which to admire the natural beauty of Sardinia. Thanks to the home's elevated position, guests get a wonderful view of the dazzling blue waters of Porto Rotondo from the upper floors. However, don't be surprised if the paradisical garden immediately below grabs your attention, too.

Out here in among the colourful flower beds and handsome granite walls, you can while away lazy afternoons paddling about in the swimming pool, catching some rays on the loungers or cooking up a storm in the outdoor kitchen (complete with a barbecue and pizza oven).

Inside, the home is spread across four floors, so while there are plenty of stairs, it feels cool and airy, thanks to the high ceilings, stark white walls and terracotta tiling underfoot. There's a discernible rustic theme to the design, from the wicker chairs and natural-themed artwork to the large rock feature in the main entrance hall.

With the nautical location, you might not be surprised to learn that there are two beaches that can be reached in just over a quarter of an hour's walk (Spiaggia dei Sassi and di Ira), while the historic city of Olbia takes a similar amount of time to reach in the car, too. Closer to home, there are a handful of restaurants, bars and discos in the local area.

As for location, Cala Ginepro's crystal-clear waters and pebbled beach are 800 metres away, while the city of Olbia and its many cafe-flanked piazzas is a 12-kilometre drive.

On a panoramic promontory, close to the glamour and glitz of the Costa Smeralda, this charming villa is the perfect base for exploring Sardinia’s splendid coast. The view over the Gulf of Portisco is the kind of sight we’ve been dreaming of all winter. Picture yourself soaking up the Sardinian sun beside the lagoon-like pool or gazing out over olive trees and deep blue ocean from the veranda. Inside provides a welcome respite from the heat of the midday sun, with cool terracotta floors, traditional furniture and local handicrafts. You’re 2km away from a string of white sand beaches, as well as the Marina di Portisco with its selection of waterfront restaurants. The characterful borgo of San Pantaleo is just inland and is ideal for picking up fresh produce for an Italian style feast come the evening. You’ll want to be back home before the sun goes down though, for an aperitif with a view.

Part of a new-build apartment building, the home's pared-back design may feel a little characterless for some. It's also worth noting there's no kitchen or living room facilities here. However, that sea-facing balcony helps to make up for that.

Grab a dose of sea air along the promenade right outside your door, and when thoughts turn to food, head to the old town’s restaurant-lined plaza for the freshest seafood imaginable. Fancy a beach day? There are miles of uncrowded sandy coves waiting just a short drive away.

Created to make the most of indoor-outdoor living, it's also cleverly constructed to keep the south-facing areas cool and shaded, shielding your from the heat of the Sardinian sun. While the stark grey facade and sharply angled lines make a breathtaking first impression, we think the interiors speak for themselves too. We love how the architect decided to show off the incredible landscape of La Maddalena by creating a picture frame out of every window – each one set at the exact right height to maximise the impact. There’s even a telescope in the study so you can explore the area from the comfort of your own home, or go full Rear Window and see what your neighbours are up to down in the harbour. The muted grey tones of the exterior are mirrored in the contemporary kitchen, while the dining room is framed by floor-to-ceiling windows offering the best views in the house. Outside, you’ll find a wooden deck that’s perfect for morning coffees, evening cocktails, and everything in between.

This gorgeous apartment sits in a renovated 19th-century building in the heart of the Old Town and offers stunning views in every direction. Our favourite bit is the expansive roof terrace, the ideal place to gather for soaking up the Corsican sunshine. The well-shaded dining area has its own barbecue so you can sit down to eat alfresco at lunchtime. There’s also a relaxing chill-out area, with wicker furniture and beanbags overlooking the Mediterranean sea below. If you can tear yourself away from your home's many little luxuries, you're only a fifteen-minute walk from a sandy beach and the charming marina filled with bobbing yachts, while just outside your door, the Old Town offers up restaurants, bars and plenty of cultural attractions including the impressive Église St-Jean-Baptiste.

Location-wise, you’re a short drive from traditional restaurants and Li Cossi Beach.
