This historic villa and its sprawling grounds look out over the rolling Tuscan hills. In fact, the villa was once owned by a noble family from Lucca, and its opulent history is still evident in the home's period features. Admire the original beamed ceilings on the ground floor, and unwind in the elegant living room in front of the fireplace. Upstairs, antique furnishings adorn the bedrooms, and windows look out over the beautiful gardens. We think the lovely outdoor space is where you'll spend most of your time, either relaxing with a drink under the shade of the olive trees or swimming in the pool. As evening approaches, light the candles and enjoy a barbecue with a glass of local wine. The tree-lined roads surrounding the property are the perfect place for a morning run, and it's only a ten-minute stroll to the local village, where you can enjoy a meal in the medieval square. There's so much more to explore a short drive away, too – venture to the coast and relax on the beach at Viareggio (a twenty-two-minute ride), or wander the Renaissance-era city walls of Lucca, a thirty-minute drive away.

Practically the subject of an entire film genre, restoring a farmhouse in Tuscany’s countryside is the stuff of fantasies – only here, someone else has done the job for you and you get to kick back and enjoy the fruits of their labour. Set among rolling hills, a thirty-five-minute drive to the historic city of Lucca and twenty minutes to the alluring Viareggio coastline, this exceptional villa gazes out over the distant mountains. French doors flanked by green shutters and wide archways let the sunlight flood into every room, gently warming the pale terracotta-hued tiles. Farm life is not forgotten in this restoration – a country-style kitchen complete with rooster motif and copper pots invites you to spend an evening tending to traditional Tuscan cuisine, while beamed ceilings and a healthy dose of wood and wicker furniture ensure the natural world never feels far away. Our favourite spot is the rustic-chic terrace, with its impressive dining and chill-out areas setting the tone for the postcard-perfect garden. Located on the outskirts of Camaiore, surrounded by fields, this home is a great choice for anyone looking for a quiet location with amenities nearby. You’re just 2.4 kilometres from the town, where you’ll find an ancient walled city, cobbled streets, and plenty of restaurants, and for days at the beach, sandy Lido di Camaiore is an 8.5 kilometre drive away. The home itself boasts a private pool (above ground) and a shaded alfresco dining area. While the traditional decor inside won’t be everyone’s cup of tea – the bathrooms in particular feel a little dated – the wooden beams and exposed stonework certainly add character.

This ancient Tuscan hamlet (or ‘borgo’) sits atop a hill, with views over the countryside as far as the eye can see. On a clear day, you can catch a glimpse of Corsica on the horizon. Surrounded by olive groves, organic vegetable gardens, ancient trees and donkey paddocks, this is the place to immerse yourself in provincial Italian life. Plus, the cities of Pisa and Lucca are within day-tripping distance.

Designed by architect Stefano Viviani, this villa blends into the landscape seamlessly. The wooden terrace juts out of the hillside, allowing for panoramic views of the countryside sprawling before you, from the cool of the plunge pool or the soothing heat of the hot tub. Loungers and reclining chairs are set up the face the view and there’s shaded dining and a lounge area on the lower terrace.

Inside, you can see the work of an architect on display in every handmade step, wall of windows and traditional-style fireplace. It’s a vision of soft greys and white, with picture-frame windows at every turn to display the view as proudly as any of the donkey-themed modern artworks on the walls. Sculptures are displayed with museum-level curation, in glass boxes, and the coffee table is littered with thick art books. The kitchen, beneath a wooden ceiling, is an ode to rusticana with a huge island in the centre, yet feels modern in dove grey and light wood. Then there are the bedrooms, both boasting panoramic views from walls of windows the instant you wake up.

While externally this villa might seem like an ancient 17th-century farmhouse, inside there is a wealth of modern features. The panoramic terrace has unbeatable views across the green valleys of Tuscany, and you might even be able to spy the city of Lucca hiding in the valley. This is the perfect spot to enjoy breakfast each morning, breathing in the scent of the mulberry and fig trees that grow in the garden. Inside, original wooden beams adorn the ceilings in the living room and dining space, where you can unwind in the evening. Aspiring chefs will relish the professional kitchen; book a cooking class – featuring ingredients from the garden – to better discover the flavours of this area. The tree-lined roads in Fibbialla are begging to be explored on foot, but you might also take the 25-minute drive into Lucca to explore its historic streets and museums. The beach in Viareggio is also just 30 minutes away, meaning there's plenty of choice for a day trip. In the evening, choose between lighting up the wood-fired pizza oven or the barbecue, and dine outside as the sun sets over the hills, a glass of local wine in hand.

The apartment itself is an ideal city bolthole. Intricately carved teak furniture gives the open living room a Balinese calm feel and floor-to-ceiling corner windows keep things feeling light. The kitchen is sleek and modern, tucked away at the back and you can choose between the breakfast bar or dining table to uncork a bottle of local Sangiovese for social evenings in. Boasting plenty of charm, there are plenty of beautiful places to unwind, whether you want to stretch out in front of the fireplace or settle down in the master suite’s lounge with your holiday read. 

We are fairly certain you'll spend most of your time in the gardens – swimming in the pristine pool, soaking up the Tuscan sun from the poolside loungers, enjoying indulgent spreads of burrata, sweet Italian tomatoes and local charcuteries at the outdoor dining room, preparing crispy pizzas in the terrace pizza oven for your loved ones, and finally, sipping Sangiovese on the plump outdoor sofas come sunset – bliss.

Despite its quiet location, the area is surrounded by rolling vineyards, medieval hamlets and breathtaking lakes, such as Lago di Massaciuccoli, a short drive away. We suggest a trip to the birthplace of Madame Butterfly and Tosca – Puccini’s former home and now a museum displaying the composer’s works.

Forty minutes away by car from the medieval walled city of Lucca, this villa is another fine example from the medieval era – a former castle. If you’re looking for the royal treatment, you might have found it.

Set among a spectacular array of fruit trees and bushes in its gardens, the scents of lavender, lemon, orange, and rose are thick in the air. With multiple levelled terraces, you can survey your lush kingdom from the top of the castle. You might find yourself particularly drawn to the glimmering, private pool on the lower level. Give your subjects (or family) a wave from the top, before heading down into the historic interiors. 

Exposed masonry, flagstone floors, and vintage furnishings complete the look in the lounge. But the kitchen is surprisingly modern, with glossy chrome fixtures and marble floors keeping that luxe edge. We love the tub in the main bedroom en-suite – the only place fit for VIPs to sip champagne after a long day exploring these Tuscan lands.

This home caught our eye for its panoramic views. Surrounded by olive groves, you’ll be treated to vistas of the Tuscan countryside, with the sea in the distance. The terrace provides the perfect place for a morning espresso, and the barbeque has you covered for alfresco dining. And when you need to cool off, the private pool – which is above ground, with steps to climb to enter – awaits. If day trips are on the agenda, the Tuscan coast is a twelve-minute drive away, and you can reach the Medieval town of Lucca in twenty-three minutes. It’s worth noting that the second bathroom here is on the lower-ground floor, which has a separate entrance, accessed from outside.

Spend the day on beautiful Viareggio Beach, just a one-minute stroll from this stylish apartment. Or, head to the Villa Paolina Civic Museums, which include museums of musical instruments and archaeology (just over twenty-five minutes on foot). If you fancy exploring further – Lucca and Pisa are around a thirty-minute drive away. Back at this home, relax on the balcony overlooking the communal gardens with a Prosecco. With the sea in walking distance and cities like Pisa and Lucca not far by car, we reckon most of your time will be spent exploring. But, if you're keen to enjoy a more relaxed pace, there's plenty to appreciate back home, too. The private terrace and small garden are perfect for relaxing with a glass of wine in the fresh air. Indoors, there's a cosy living room, a well-equipped kitchen, and three comfortable bedrooms – although air conditioning is only available in the hallway. We think it makes a great option for a Tuscan seaside retreat.

Or spend the afternoon wandering through Lucca's medieval city centre, admiring the ancient churches and browsing the many independent art galleries – it's a forty-minute drive away.
