Though we came for the vistas, we stayed for the decor – bold, bright, and modern, with just the right touch of homely comfort. Escape downtown in minutes to shop and dine or find yourself teeing off on one of a dozen surrounding golf courses. The Palm Springs Aerial Tramway – a short drive away – is a must before returning home for an ice-cold beer on the airy terrace.

This little Palm Springs pad just pops. From the minute you walk through the door, the quirky neon touches and fun flourishes are guaranteed to put a smile on even the surliest of faces. If the interiors of this minimalist home appear to have jumped straight out of the pages of a glossy magazine, you’re not far off. This home, designed by Palmer and Kriesel is hidden away in a Palm Springs cul-de-sac and has previously graced the pages of the New York Times. Homage to all things mid-century, with Eames chairs, Nelson lamps and a vintage Malm fireplace in the master bedroom.

We were wowed by the open living area, designed with socialising in mind and with great views of the backyard. Out in the garden, reclining by the shimmering turquoise pool is the perfect way to unwind, but if you need to take your relaxing to the next level, there’s also a hot tub to bubble the night away in. Dine alfresco under the endless desert sky, then end the evening around the flickering fire pit with a glass of something strong as the sun sets behind the mountains.

When you want to venture out, downtown Palm Springs is only a five-minute drive away, and Joshua Tree National Park, roughly an hour away, is a must-see for hikers and nature enthusiasts. Visit The Palm Springs Art Museum, an eight-minute drive away which features complex sculptures, glassworks, and photographs by renowned artists such as Andy Warhol and Diane Arbus.

The high ceilings, wood beams and white-painted walls in the living space give it a light and fresh feel. This beautiful house will be a smash hit with fans of Broadway. The former home of composer Frederick Loewe (writer of My Fair Lady and Camelot) is a real showstopper, with vast walls of glass that put the incredible views over Palm Springs and the entire Coachella Valley firmly centre stage. With one of the largest plots we’ve seen in Palm Springs, there’s a real sense of space both inside and out. The mid-century style lounge is open plan, with sliding doors opening to the pool, and a full bar that any mixologist would feel comfortable behind. You’ll feel like the star of the show in the master bedroom, with its floor-to-ceiling windows, fireplace and swivelling bed. While those views do take the limelight, the all-singing, all-dancing garden is pretty special too. Some serious imagination has been brought to the landscaping, with contemporary sculptures, a bean-shaped pool, artificial river, and a grotto style hot tub and waterfall (oh and did we mention the tennis court?) The location in the most exclusive area of Palm Springs is fit for entertainment royalty too (to give you an idea, the Elvis Presley Estate is over the road), and you’re only 5 minutes’ drive from Downtown. Bravo.

Masterminded by architect William Krisel (the man who kickstarted the trend for Palm Springs' contemporary glass-dominated homes in the 1960s) it features teal chairs, a white-bricked fireplace and flat-screen portrait TV set to display modern art in the light, bright living room. The moss-green splashback and white cabinets in the kitchen are delightfully retro, but the modern oven, double fridge and coffee-maker are state-of-the-art. The bedrooms all have sliding glass doors that lead out to the patio, letting in an abundance of that joyful Californian sunshine. Outside you'll find the pièce de résistance – the private pool and bubbling hot tub. Both are heated, perfect for when the desert chill creeps in. There's also a firepit to keep things cosy, and a covered outdoor dining area with a gas barbecue where you can watch stars twinkle over the mountains at dusk. If you still need a little extra help unwinding, your host can also arrange for a poolside massage. Bliss.
