After a hard day’s sightseeing, come back to your personal oasis for a refreshing dip in the pool, followed by cocktails as the sun dips behind the mountains. Stepping out to look around the garden, you'll notice tall swaying palms, vibrant red chairs and a sparking saline swimming pool with an integrated waterfall spa. Here, you'll also find a barbecue island bar with chic stools to perch on while sipping cocktails – we certainly know where we'd spend our time. Sliding glass doors welcome you into the living space, blurring the boundaries between outside and in, so you can gaze into the picturesque mountain silhouettes whether you are. Inside, there's a modern look with high vaulted ceilings, polished marble floors and a swanky chef's kitchen – enjoy a quick cup of coffee around the curved breakfast bar. Bright and roomy, all the bedrooms have their own personalities and open up to an outside area. They're also accompanied by some seriously stunning en-suite bathrooms – we could think of nothing better than taking a long soak in the freestanding bathtub to wash that chlorine off. In a historic tennis club neighbourhood, you're surrounded by great walking trails as well as the Palm Canyon Drive that will take just a six-minute car ride to reach. Flourishing with upscale shops, indie coffee houses and some excellent restaurants, there's plenty to explore. A sixteen-minute stroll north will find you in Downtown Palm Springs, boasting fancy boulevards and the glitz and glam of Hollywood. With so much around you, we think this mid-century pool pad is as convenient as it is stylish.

The sociable living space on the ground floor centres around a fireplace and two sets of sliding doors open to the courtyard garden, complete with a dining table and barbecue. Upstairs, we love the size of the bedrooms – particularly the double-height master with its big balcony with views all the way to the mountains. It's the perfect place for coffee before heading to the pool for a swim each morning.

Given the size, it’s particularly good for large family groups, and while it might seem like a good spot for a party, the host is very clear that it’s a place of relaxation. Originally built in 1935, you can find this vibrant villa in the sought-after Movie Colony East neighbourhood, known for its cosy restaurants and famous residents. Boasting a spacious yard with a private pool, spend your days relaxing on a sun lounger and cooling off in the water, but if you're looking for a little adventure, there's plenty to be had in the city.

Green spaces like Ruth Hardy Park offer picturesque jogging and picnic spots, while Wellness Park is ideal for some quiet meditation in the warm open air. There are some great hiking trails in Palm Springs, too – head to Joshua Tree National Park to wander the striking desert landscapes dotted with rugged rock formations and get the best views over the clifftops.

In one of Palm Springs' most distinctive neighbourhoods, where Elvis and Priscilla honeymooned in 1967, this slice of mid-century architecture has all the hallmarks of the area's defining style. From its stone-clad exterior and atrium entrance to its vaulted ceilings and walls of windows, it's just as cool as it was back in the day. And with a list of former owners that includes Chicago department store tycoons the Marshall Field family, it's little wonder there's a certain sophisticated atmosphere to the place. It's old-school Palm Springs at its very best.

Set on a corner plot, the home's outside space is idyllic, surrounded by a privacy wall and dotted with tall palms and desert planting – with the ever-present mountains acting as a backdrop. The pool is a perfect size, with an above-ground spa and plenty of sun loungers, and there's a propane barbecue so you can eat alfresco in the evenings. At night it's beautifully lit with uplighters beneath the trees.

But if you're attracted to this place for its design credentials, you'll no doubt be interested in the interiors. Maintained in almost original condition, there's a comfy lounge area with a fireplace, a large bar and dining table, with a kitchen tucked around the corner. Big bedrooms mostly open directly to the outside space and the bathrooms have a nostalgic feel too.

We were wowed by the open living area, designed with socialising in mind and with great views of the backyard. Out in the garden, reclining by the shimmering turquoise pool is the perfect way to unwind, but if you need to take your relaxing to the next level, there’s also a hot tub to bubble the night away in. Dine alfresco under the endless desert sky, then end the evening around the flickering fire pit with a glass of something strong as the sun sets behind the mountains.

When you want to venture out, downtown Palm Springs is only a five-minute drive away, and Joshua Tree National Park, roughly an hour away, is a must-see for hikers and nature enthusiasts.
