Built in the 40s in that iconic Beverly Hills ranch style, this half-acre private estate in uptown Palm Springs has been sympathetically restored to its former glory, with some much-needed modern touches added for good measure. Your host has even gone as far as to have custom furnishings fabricated to compliment the original architecture – no off-the-peg solutions for this mid-century beauty. 

But before we dig into the details, let's address the headline act – that view! Look out over a planted perimeter of split palms, olive trees, and desert succulents (for utmost privacy) to be greeted by stunning mountain views dominated by the almost 11,000ft of Mount San Jacinto. If you'd like to experience the view from the other side, you're a ten-minute drive from Palm Springs aerial tramway, which will have you part-way to the peak in no time. 

Back at home, you're spoiled for choice when it comes to seating. Indoors or alfresco, upright or flat-out, business formal or slouchy casual? There's an almost infinite combination of seating styles and areas to relax with a book/movie/podcast. 

Three of the five bedrooms boast direct access to the soothing spa patio, and all of them are blessed with luxurious linens and full en-suite bathrooms. In addition, a perfectly maintained pool offers much-needed respite from the desert heat over the summer months. At the same time, the stunning kitchen is equipped with everything you could need except an actual chef, though your host is happy to arrange one for you.

Just stepping into the living room of this modernist Palm Springs studio will make you feel like you've been transported back to another era. There's a psychedelic dining set-up (we don't get to say that every day), colourful wall art, and an iconic egg chair. Its vibrant personality extends out to the garden patio, where you can relax under the palm trees and admire the mountain views from the sun loungers during the day, and light up the fire pit at dusk. If you can't get enough of those vistas – float all day in the shared pool area (or relax in the jacuzzi if you prefer). You can even show off your putting skills in the mini-golf area. Out and about – explore the galleries and tiki bars of Old Las Palmas, four minutes on foot or under one minute on one of the complimentary beach cruiser bikes. Alternatively, explore Downtown Palm Springs (a twenty-minute stroll), but if you don't want to walk – there's a free trolley called the Buzz that can whisk you there. This place is super easy to get to by air, too –  Palm Springs International Airport is just six-minute drive away.

As studios go, this one is pretty spacious – despite the large sofa and king-size bed in the common area, the overall impression as you enter is one of space and light. Part of this is due to the mod-inspired, vibrant decor, and part is due to the set of glass sliding doors that lead out to your very own balcony. A separate kitchen with all the mod-cons and a sizeable bathroom complete this home. There’s plenty of closet space to unpack your wardrobe – good job, too, as you’re right on the edge and within walking reach of the Uptown Design District, home to the best boutiques of Palm Springs. Downstairs, you can hang out in the California sunshine by the pool with a drink at hand or enjoy a relaxing dip in the jacuzzi, before heading out to explore the bars, eateries and sunny sights that this fashionable end of town has to offer.

Nothing says Palm Springs quite like bright colours and retro designs. With a youthful spirit and an eclectic choice of furnishings and artwork, this apartment is perfect for couples who want to explore this desert resort city. You'll find classic Palm Springs-style in abundance at this iconic 1965 Alexander home in Oasis Del Sol. The backyard is the main draw. Swim in the pool, fire up the BBQ, or unwind in the spa at sunset in front of mountain views. Inside, the decor won't blow you away, but it's spacious, with two living rooms and two dining areas. At full capacity, two guests will share the Murphy bed in the office, and you’ll be sharing three bathrooms – easy enough for a group or family. You can walk to a few local spots, but it’s worth hiring a car to reach downtown Palm Springs, Palm Canyon Drive, or some of the famous hiking trails nearby.

Desert Iconic

Pow! This Mid-Century Modern house certainly has visual impact. From kitsch gold taps in the bathroom to the African nick-nacks adorning every surface in the living room, its style is best described as “more is more”.
