Perched on a bluff overlooking the Pacific, this home offers spectacular panoramas of crashing waves and the area's famous Bird Rock. The sleek interior doesn't disappoint, either – although the floor-to-ceiling windows guarantee the scenery is always front and centre. We love the enclosed courtyard, with its outdoor fireplace, hot tub and TV screen, and the single-level layout makes socialising a dream. But our favourite spot is by far the oceanfront main bedroom – nothing beats waking up to coastal views each morning. When you're ready to explore, you'll find a few cafes and restaurants nearby, but for more options, make the short drive to La Jolla Village. Beach-wise, Pacific Beach, Windansea and Mission beaches are also within driving distance.

As well as the beach and La Jolla town, you're also within striking distance of the spectacular ecological reserve, La Jolla Cove. The water here is extraordinarily clear, and on a good day you can see more than 30km. So get your snorkel ready and dive on in.

We couldn't think of a dreamier way to start and end your days here than with a leisurely stroll along the bayside boardwalks. Or better still, make footprints in the sand as you listen to the waves crash before you on the beach itself.

Head out the door of this immaculate beach house and you’ll find yourself just seconds away from the golden sands of Mission Beach. Inside, the cool coastal palette reflects the dreamy beachfront location, with accents of driftwood and natural rattan, and there are excellent views of the ocean from the large sun deck. Be the first to bag a spot on the sand and set up camp for the day – the host supplies beach chairs, boogie boards and towels so you’ll be well equipped. That said, you’re so close that you can easily zip back for a forgotten umbrella or some sun cream. If you’re a thrill-seeker, hop on one of the supplied beach cruisers and ride the half mile down the front to Belmont Park’s Big Dipper. As the sun starts to dip in the sky, de-sand the kids ahead of pre-dinner drinks on the outdoor sofa. There’s a barbecue, and the sleek kitchen is a pleasure to cook in, but if you’d rather somebody else did the work, then you’re within walking distance of Mission Beach’s colourful restaurants and cafes.

This exquisite home has to be seen to be believed. It’s a beachfront home with everything you could wish for right at your fingertips, and some luxuries you may not have even imagined. The home can be found in La Jolla, directly across from Windansea Beach, and looking out over surfers’ favourite Big Rock. The views are incredible from almost every angle of the home, whether you’re in the lounge that’s been designed to offer a 180-degree vista of the ocean and the shoreline, or you’re cooking in the outdoor kitchen on the roof deck – from that elevation you can look forward to a 360-degree panorama. 

You can stroll out of your door and straight onto the beach, and return to rinse off in the outdoor shower before plunging into the pool. The heated pool and spa sit at the front of the home so boast ocean views. Sip Champagne in the spa while breathing in the sea air and hearing the waves crash ashore – absolute bliss. 

In the evenings, move up to the roof deck. Cook up a feast in the outdoor kitchen – or book a private chef to do the hard work while you doze on one of the loungers – then dine under the stars. At the end of the day, you can return to your modern-Victorian home for a soak in the tub and a barbecue in the private courtyard.

Although this home sits directly opposite San Diego's famous Mission Bay, there are plenty of perks at the address to stop you from immediately fleeing to the boardwalks and beaches.

The swimming pool and adjoining spa are glorious spots in which to enjoy the SoCal summers, while there's also an alfresco table under a parasol as well as a cabana with an impressively equipped outdoor kitchen whenever you're in need of a little shade. Add to that a rooftop terrace that offers glorious waterfront views, as well as a couple of balconies for good measure, and you've got an address in which you barely need to head inside.

That being said, you won't be disappointed when you finally get around to doing just that. The large glass windows let in plenty of sunshine and also look out to views of leafy palm trees. We're big fans of the sleek kitchen and equally stylish bathrooms, including one with a steam shower.

There may come a point when you fancy seeing a little more of the local area and Mission Bay sits literally just around the corner, offering plentiful opportunities for swimming and watersports. The centre of San Diego and Balboa Park both take a quarter of an hour to reach in the car, too.

Steps away from the water, Briarford can offer you all the delights of the San Diego seaside. There are all sorts of activities to keep you busy, from paddle-boarding in the bay to hopping on a sailing boat, or just having a cocktail under the shade of the trees in the garden. The interior is comfortable, with decent amenities, but honestly, this home is all about the location, and on that front, it’s hard to beat.

From the surfboard on the wall to the proximity to Mission Beach (two minutes), this colourful home is all about the ocean. The long black leather sofas in the lounge are great for movie nights, while the kitchen has enough space and appliances to host a dinner party. Things are just as bright in the third bedroom, where three queen-size beds mix up red furnishings against white walls. Walk out of your cosy home for just a few seconds and you'll reach the golden sands of Mission Beach. The beautiful coastal stretch is one of the most desired areas of San Diego, and you're right on its doorstep. 

Whether you're sharing a bottle of wine in the sandy terrace, relaxing on the sofas or enjoying a meal at the dining table, the breathtaking view of the ocean is always present. Energising and inspiring, it breathes life into every moment.

With ocean views from almost every room, this La Jolla home is something really special. The sound of the ocean sets the scene, rocking you to sleep each night and soothing you throughout your stay. 

The home was originally built in the 1920s and has been lovingly remodelled – it retains that historic charm but is modern and comfortable, with all that you might need for a beachside stay. We’d be dividing our time between the sweet little patio, which is a lovely suntrap, and the various cosy corners with ocean views. The living room just calls out for evenings spent together playing cards, particularly if the weather turns chilly and you can light the fire. 

You’ll likely spend a lot of your time on the beach – it takes at most one minute to walk there. Slightly further afield, La Jolla Cove is seven minutes away by car and the thrills of Belmont Park are just eleven minutes away. La Jolla Village is a treasure trove of fine dining and exclusive boutiques, and it’s twelve minutes away by car. 

When the sun starts to dip in the sky, slip outside to the communal courtyard to take in the breath-taking sunset. Perhaps mix up a cocktail or two for the occasion – you’re on your holiday, after all.
