Head out the door of this immaculate beach house and you’ll find yourself just seconds away from the golden sands of Mission Beach. Inside, the cool coastal palette reflects the dreamy beachfront location, with accents of driftwood and natural rattan, and there are excellent views of the ocean from the large sun deck. Be the first to bag a spot on the sand and set up camp for the day – the host supplies beach chairs, boogie boards and towels so you’ll be well equipped. That said, you’re so close that you can easily zip back for a forgotten umbrella or some sun cream. If you’re a thrill-seeker, hop on one of the supplied beach cruisers and ride the half mile down the front to Belmont Park’s Big Dipper. As the sun starts to dip in the sky, de-sand the kids ahead of pre-dinner drinks on the outdoor sofa. There’s a barbecue, and the sleek kitchen is a pleasure to cook in, but if you’d rather somebody else did the work, then you’re within walking distance of Mission Beach’s colourful restaurants and cafes.

With Mission Bay Aquatic Center located just steps away, and breakfast spots, coffee houses, pubs and restaurants all within close walking distance – you needn't lift so much as a finger when it comes to meal times. However, it's nice to have the option of cooking at the villa, should you wish to rustle up your own recipes too. 

Spread across three levels, watch the sailboats glide across the bay from anywhere in the home – whether that's from the top-floor balcony or down on the ground-level patio with lounge seating. Grab a drink and station yourself ready to watch the sunset over the bayfront. Bliss. We couldn't think of a dreamier way to start and end your days here than with a leisurely stroll along the bayside boardwalks. Or better still, make footprints in the sand as you listen to the waves crash before you on the beach itself.

Known for its pristine beaches and optimal climate, San Diego is already a gem on the west coast of America. The fact that this beach cottage can also be found in the Mission Bay area makes the trip out to San Diego even more of a must. Ideal for a family stay or reunion of friends, think of this home as a portal to all things spectacular. The beach, for one, is a quick walk away, and so are a number of great restaurants and markets. Belmont Park is ready to keep you company for hours, but we especially recommend seeing it at night when all the lights make it feel extra magical. 

Spending time at home will likely result in burgers grilling on the barbecue outside – stay out there for long after, even as the sun begins to dip, to bask in the holiday feeling. The fireplace is great for colder nights where you can enjoy takeout around the fire before playing a round of Monopoly. Hit the boardwalk on balmier evenings and if you happen to end up with a taco in one hand and a frozen margarita in the other, well, we call that a good night.


Little Blue in San Diego

Shaded by towering tropical trees, the best way to start the day is with the salty sea breeze in your hair here. Sun-soaked and earthy, we love the feel of this home. And it gets better. Just a few footsteps take you straight to South Mission Beach, where you have amazing restaurants, bars, and markets at your fingertips. While the beach is hard to tear yourself away from, we'd spare some time to explore nearby golf courses, shops, and the good old Giant Dipper Roller Coaster at the Belmont Amusement Park – all just a short walk away. At the end of the day, you can return to your modern-Victorian home for a soak in the tub and a barbecue in the private courtyard.

It's quite compact, but this home is in a great location for active holidays on the South California coast. Take a paddle board to the surf – there’s one provided – or cycle along the peninsula using one of the free bikes. If you need a rest, take a moment to pause on the golden sands of South Mission Beach and soak up the rays. Back at home you can soak your muscles in the shared spa pool, before refuelling with a barbecue on the beach or a bite from one of nearby Mission Boulevard's hip cafés.

Steps away from the water, Briarford can offer you all the delights of the San Diego seaside. There are all sorts of activities to keep you busy, from paddle-boarding in the bay to hopping on a sailing boat, or just having a cocktail under the shade of the trees in the garden. The interior is comfortable, with decent amenities, but honestly, this home is all about the location, and on that front, it’s hard to beat.


Briarford

Although this home sits directly opposite San Diego's famous Mission Bay, there are plenty of perks at the address to stop you from immediately fleeing to the boardwalks and beaches.

The swimming pool and adjoining spa are glorious spots in which to enjoy the SoCal summers, while there's also an alfresco table under a parasol as well as a cabana with an impressively equipped outdoor kitchen whenever you're in need of a little shade. Add to that a rooftop terrace that offers glorious waterfront views, as well as a couple of balconies for good measure, and you've got an address in which you barely need to head inside.

That being said, you won't be disappointed when you finally get around to doing just that. The large glass windows let in plenty of sunshine and also look out to views of leafy palm trees. We're big fans of the sleek kitchen and equally stylish bathrooms, including one with a steam shower.

There may come a point when you fancy seeing a little more of the local area and Mission Bay sits literally just around the corner, offering plentiful opportunities for swimming and watersports. The centre of San Diego and Balboa Park both take a quarter of an hour to reach in the car, too.

From the surfboard on the wall to the proximity to Mission Beach (two minutes), this colourful home is all about the ocean. It’s worth noting that this villa is only available with five bedrooms and four bathrooms during the summer – at other times it’s rented as a four-bedroom, three-bathroom home that sleeps ten.

Ideally placed, this apartment is close to the best beach in San Diego according to locals, as it is just a short one-minute walk to Bonita Cove following a path down to the ocean and boardwalk. Here, you can play a game of beach volleyball or simply enjoy the serene ocean sounds and clean, golden sands. 

Meanwhile, the famous Mission Beach is only a seven-minute walk away, following a charming beach path that is located just outside your front door. This is a popular spot for water sports. Plus, Mission Boulevard is lined with cafés and eateries for your lunchtime needs, while, other cafés, restaurants, ice cream shops, and even a karaoke bar are within a ten-minute walk from your door. 

Belmont Park, San Diego’s historic oceanfront amusement park – featuring the Giant Dipper Roller Coaster, Liberty Carousel, and Tilt-a-Wheel – can be reached within six minutes by foot. Close enough to walk to from this condo but far enough away that the sounds and crowds won’t disturb you at home while you are admiring the stunning views.

Every hour of the day can be orientated around the view, from breakfast at the dining table overlooking the ocean to evenings at the hot tub or beach-level fire pit. With seating areas across the home, you'll easily split into smaller groups here – ideal when travelling with several generations. If you are driving, you'll find yourself just a few miles from SeaWorld, San Diego Zoo, downtown San Diego, and much more – though the smaller garage will limit your choice of vehicle.

Perched on a bluff overlooking the Pacific, this home offers spectacular panoramas of crashing waves and the area's famous Bird Rock. The sleek interior doesn't disappoint, either – although the floor-to-ceiling windows guarantee the scenery is always front and centre. We love the enclosed courtyard, with its outdoor fireplace, hot tub and TV screen, and the single-level layout makes socialising a dream. But our favourite spot is by far the oceanfront main bedroom – nothing beats waking up to coastal views each morning. When you're ready to explore, you'll find a few cafes and restaurants nearby, but for more options, make the short drive to La Jolla Village.
