Be the first to bag a spot on the sand and set up camp for the day – the host supplies beach chairs, boogie boards and towels so you’ll be well equipped. That said, you’re so close that you can easily zip back for a forgotten umbrella or some sun cream. If you’re a thrill-seeker, hop on one of the supplied beach cruisers and ride the half mile down the front to Belmont Park’s Big Dipper. As the sun starts to dip in the sky, de-sand the kids ahead of pre-dinner drinks on the outdoor sofa. The tranquil living space is cloaked in soothing gray tones, with a few reflections of its seaside location – spot the "Beach Life" cushions and the starfish sculptures. You can kick back and relax on the comfy sofa, then cook up your favourite dishes in the smart kitchen to refuel after a busy day. Or, head out to the patio and fire up the barbeque for some burgers in the sunshine. With views across to the water, this outdoor space is ideal for soaking up the warm Californian sun. 

Sail Bay is just a few metres away, while Mission Beach's long sandy shoreline is only a five-minute walk from your front door. Fans of water sports are spoilt for choice, with the option to try out paddle boarding, surfing, kayaking, and much more at one of the local centres. And, for those that prefer to stay on dry land, Belmont Park is just a fifteen-minute walk away, while the historic Gaslamp Quarter is a fifteen-minute car ride.

Steps away from the water, Briarford can offer you all the delights of the San Diego seaside. There are all sorts of activities to keep you busy, from paddle-boarding in the bay to hopping on a sailing boat, or just having a cocktail under the shade of the trees in the garden. The interior is comfortable, with decent amenities, but honestly, this home is all about the location, and on that front, it’s hard to beat.


Briarford

Although this home sits directly opposite San Diego's famous Mission Bay, there are plenty of perks at the address to stop you from immediately fleeing to the boardwalks and beaches.

The swimming pool and adjoining spa are glorious spots in which to enjoy the SoCal summers, while there's also an alfresco table under a parasol as well as a cabana with an impressively equipped outdoor kitchen whenever you're in need of a little shade. Add to that a rooftop terrace that offers glorious waterfront views, as well as a couple of balconies for good measure, and you've got an address in which you barely need to head inside.

That being said, you won't be disappointed when you finally get around to doing just that. The large glass windows let in plenty of sunshine and also look out to views of leafy palm trees. We're big fans of the sleek kitchen and equally stylish bathrooms, including one with a steam shower.

There may come a point when you fancy seeing a little more of the local area and Mission Bay sits literally just around the corner, offering plentiful opportunities for swimming and watersports. The centre of San Diego and Balboa Park both take a quarter of an hour to reach in the car, too.


Man on a Mission

Just steps from the sandy beach, this home is something the whole family will remember. With breathtaking views from almost every angle, a garden and a stunning patio, it’s the perfect spot for a relaxing beach break. Inside, we’re talking vaulted ceilings and exposed wood beams for a real beach house feel, and each bedroom has its own en-suite and access to an outside space – be it a balcony or the rear terrace. Facing the ocean, there’s a perfect outdoor dining area and barbecue, so you can enjoy warm evenings outdoors together, and there’s a lovely pool and spa. Best of all, you’ll have your own private access steps down to the gorgeous stretch of sand between Windansea Beach and Marine Street Beach. If you're travelling with a golf fan, Torrey Pines Golf Course is a short drive away, and San Diego Zoo is a great day out if you’re traveling with children.

The home can be found in La Jolla, directly across from Windansea Beach, and looking out over surfers’ favourite Big Rock. The views are incredible from almost every angle of the home, whether you’re in the lounge that’s been designed to offer a 180-degree vista of the ocean and the shoreline, or you’re cooking in the outdoor kitchen on the roof deck – from that elevation you can look forward to a 360-degree panorama. 

You can stroll out of your door and straight onto the beach, and return to rinse off in the outdoor shower before plunging into the pool. The heated pool and spa sit at the front of the home so boast ocean views. Sip Champagne in the spa while breathing in the sea air and hearing the waves crash ashore – absolute bliss. 

In the evenings, move up to the roof deck. Cook up a feast in the outdoor kitchen – or book a private chef to do the hard work while you doze on one of the loungers – then dine under the stars. Later on, you might curl up by one of the fire features, perhaps using the telescope for a spot of stargazing.

Step onto the terrace of this smart condo in Pacific Beach, and you'll be able to spot all the landmarks you plan to visit during your trip. From Mission Bay to the glittering downtown skyline and the distant peaks of Mt Soledad, there are fantastic views across all of San Diego. You'll find bikes, boogie boards and surf boards ready for adventures on sandy Pacific beach – the water is just three blocks away. Perched on a bluff overlooking the Pacific, this home offers spectacular panoramas of crashing waves and the area's famous Bird Rock. The sleek interior doesn't disappoint, either – although the floor-to-ceiling windows guarantee the scenery is always front and centre. We love the enclosed courtyard, with its outdoor fireplace, hot tub and TV screen, and the single-level layout makes socialising a dream. But our favourite spot is by far the oceanfront main bedroom – nothing beats waking up to coastal views each morning. When you're ready to explore, you'll find a few cafes and restaurants nearby, but for more options, make the short drive to La Jolla Village. Beach-wise, Pacific Beach, Windansea and Mission beaches are also within driving distance.

Relax on the terrace with your group in the balmy evenings, and be sure to regularly top up your glass with chilled local wine. Moments away from La Jolla's Windansea Beach and Big Rock Reef, we can guarantee the beautiful setting will take your breath away.

The Tide

With ocean views from almost every room, this La Jolla home is something really special. The sound of the ocean sets the scene, rocking you to sleep each night and soothing you throughout your stay. 

The home was originally built in the 1920s and has been lovingly remodelled – it retains that historic charm but is modern and comfortable, with all that you might need for a beachside stay. We’d be dividing our time between the sweet little patio, which is a lovely suntrap, and the various cosy corners with ocean views. The living room just calls out for evenings spent together playing cards, particularly if the weather turns chilly and you can light the fire. 

You’ll likely spend a lot of your time on the beach – it takes at most one minute to walk there. Slightly further afield, La Jolla Cove is seven minutes away by car and the thrills of Belmont Park are just eleven minutes away. La Jolla Village is a treasure trove of fine dining and exclusive boutiques, and it’s twelve minutes away by car. 

When the sun starts to dip in the sky, slip outside to the communal courtyard to take in the breath-taking sunset. Perhaps mix up a cocktail or two for the occasion – you’re on your holiday, after all.
