If you are driving, you'll find yourself just a few miles from SeaWorld, San Diego Zoo, downtown San Diego, and much more – though the smaller garage will limit your choice of vehicle.

Although this home sits directly opposite San Diego's famous Mission Bay, there are plenty of perks at the address to stop you from immediately fleeing to the boardwalks and beaches.

The swimming pool and adjoining spa are glorious spots in which to enjoy the SoCal summers, while there's also an alfresco table under a parasol as well as a cabana with an impressively equipped outdoor kitchen whenever you're in need of a little shade. Add to that a rooftop terrace that offers glorious waterfront views, as well as a couple of balconies for good measure, and you've got an address in which you barely need to head inside.

That being said, you won't be disappointed when you finally get around to doing just that. The large glass windows let in plenty of sunshine and also look out to views of leafy palm trees. We're big fans of the sleek kitchen and equally stylish bathrooms, including one with a steam shower.

There may come a point when you fancy seeing a little more of the local area and Mission Bay sits literally just around the corner, offering plentiful opportunities for swimming and watersports. The centre of San Diego and Balboa Park both take a quarter of an hour to reach in the car, too.

A classic coastal clapboard-syle home in navy blue, there are three bedrooms – including a lavish master suite and a kid’s bunk room for fun-filled sleepovers. It’s the ideal spot for long family getaways in the sun. Your host has thought of everything you might need; from a stocked kitchen to beach equipment for the kids and bikes for exploring the boardwalk. After long days on the beach, there’s nothing better than being able to simply stroll back to your home (it’s only a ten-minute walk) and flop down on that plush sectional, queue up a film on the entertainment centre, or just enjoy a cocktail in the private, sunny garden. As the sun starts to dip in the sky, de-sand the kids ahead of pre-dinner drinks on the outdoor sofa. There’s a barbecue, and the sleek kitchen is a pleasure to cook in, but if you’d rather somebody else did the work, then you’re within walking distance of Mission Beach’s colourful restaurants and cafes.

The views are incredible from almost every angle of the home, whether you’re in the lounge that’s been designed to offer a 180-degree vista of the ocean and the shoreline, or you’re cooking in the outdoor kitchen on the roof deck – from that elevation you can look forward to a 360-degree panorama. 

You can stroll out of your door and straight onto the beach, and return to rinse off in the outdoor shower before plunging into the pool. The heated pool and spa sit at the front of the home so boast ocean views. Sip Champagne in the spa while breathing in the sea air and hearing the waves crash ashore – absolute bliss. 

In the evenings, move up to the roof deck. Cook up a feast in the outdoor kitchen – or book a private chef to do the hard work while you doze on one of the loungers – then dine under the stars. Perched on a bluff overlooking the Pacific, this home offers spectacular panoramas of crashing waves and the area's famous Bird Rock. The sleek interior doesn't disappoint, either – although the floor-to-ceiling windows guarantee the scenery is always front and centre. We love the enclosed courtyard, with its outdoor fireplace, hot tub and TV screen, and the single-level layout makes socialising a dream. But our favourite spot is by far the oceanfront main bedroom – nothing beats waking up to coastal views each morning. When you're ready to explore, you'll find a few cafes and restaurants nearby, but for more options, make the short drive to La Jolla Village. It's decked out in relaxing grey, white and turquoise hues that mirror the views of the waterfront – you'll hardly be able to tear your eyes away from the huge windows in the living room. It's quite compact, but this home is in a great location for active holidays on the South California coast. Take a paddle board to the surf – there’s one provided – or cycle along the peninsula using one of the free bikes. If you need a rest, take a moment to pause on the golden sands of South Mission Beach and soak up the rays. Back at home you can soak your muscles in the shared spa pool, before refuelling with a barbecue on the beach or a bite from one of nearby Mission Boulevard's hip cafés.
