Just a one-minute walk from Mission Beach in sunny San Diego, this beautiful beach cottage is the perfect place to enjoy a relaxing coastal break. Built in the 1930s and stunningly renovated with a boho-beach vibe, you’ll feel instantly laid-back from the moment you walk through the door. Wood floors, white walls and bamboo blinds set the scene in the bright living room with its Dutch door to let the ocean breeze flow through, while the master bedroom exudes beach bliss with its wall of wicker ornaments. The second bedroom has a peaceful jungle feel with its forest green walls and even has a desk space with built-in charging ports should you need to catch up on emails before a day of sun and sand. Outside on the front porch, there’s a deck set up with a table and chairs ready to host alfresco dinners and lazy afternoons enjoying the welcome snacks and drinks provided. Although this home sits directly opposite San Diego's famous Mission Bay, there are plenty of perks at the address to stop you from immediately fleeing to the boardwalks and beaches.

The swimming pool and adjoining spa are glorious spots in which to enjoy the SoCal summers, while there's also an alfresco table under a parasol as well as a cabana with an impressively equipped outdoor kitchen whenever you're in need of a little shade. Add to that a rooftop terrace that offers glorious waterfront views, as well as a couple of balconies for good measure, and you've got an address in which you barely need to head inside.

That being said, you won't be disappointed when you finally get around to doing just that. The large glass windows let in plenty of sunshine and also look out to views of leafy palm trees. We're big fans of the sleek kitchen and equally stylish bathrooms, including one with a steam shower.

There may come a point when you fancy seeing a little more of the local area and Mission Bay sits literally just around the corner, offering plentiful opportunities for swimming and watersports. The centre of San Diego and Balboa Park both take a quarter of an hour to reach in the car, too.

If you are driving, you'll find yourself just a few miles from SeaWorld, San Diego Zoo, downtown San Diego, and much more – though the smaller garage will limit your choice of vehicle.

Whether you like to spend your holidays with an action-packed itinerary, or simply enjoy lounging around catching up on your reading, your options here are endless. This modern home offers breathtaking views at almost every angle, and three of the upstairs bedrooms have their own private, sea-view terraces. On the ground floor, you'll find an open-plan kitchen and living area, and there's enough room in the garage to park up to two cars. Your host has thought of everything you might need; from a stocked kitchen to beach equipment for the kids and bikes for exploring the boardwalk. After long days on the beach, there’s nothing better than being able to simply stroll back to your home (it’s only a ten-minute walk) and flop down on that plush sectional, queue up a film on the entertainment centre, or just enjoy a cocktail in the private, sunny garden. If you’re a thrill-seeker, hop on one of the supplied beach cruisers and ride the half mile down the front to Belmont Park’s Big Dipper. As the sun starts to dip in the sky, de-sand the kids ahead of pre-dinner drinks on the outdoor sofa. There’s a barbecue, and the sleek kitchen is a pleasure to cook in, but if you’d rather somebody else did the work, then you’re within walking distance of Mission Beach’s colourful restaurants and cafes.

It’s also a short drive from downtown San Diego if you’re craving city life, or you can get your nature fix exploring the scenic coastal paths.

The San Diego coastline, with the beauty of Sunset Cliffs and Ocean Beach, is only a fifteen-minute walk away. After a day frolicking in the surf or basking in the perfect Californian climate, come together to watch the sunset from the roof – drink in hand. Picture-perfect from start to finish, this beach cottage is just a few steps away from the sandy shore of La Jolla Cove. The living room is decorated with wicker furniture and nautical touches, with four skylights making it a perfect spot to relax in a sunbeam and watch the sea swell from your window. The bedroom is equally relaxing, with a comfortable bed and a flat screen TV for lazy evenings; your only trouble will be deciding which beach to visit and which La Jolla Village restaurant to try next. This home is best suited for two people, but if you wanted to bring some friends or children, the sofa bed in the living area offers two additional sleep options.

A block away from the sea and a short walk to La Jolla, inside this charming home you'll find a cosy, open-plan living/dining area with warm wooden floors and a wooden ceiling, plus a gorgeous bay window looking out across at the water. The master bedroom has one of those too, as well as elegant bedding and seriously comfortable bed. But it's the location that's the star of the show here. As well as the beach and La Jolla town, you're also within striking distance of the spectacular ecological reserve, La Jolla Cove. The water here is extraordinarily clear, and on a good day you can see more than 30km. So get your snorkel ready and dive on in.

Perched on a bluff overlooking the Pacific, this home offers spectacular panoramas of crashing waves and the area's famous Bird Rock. The sleek interior doesn't disappoint, either – although the floor-to-ceiling windows guarantee the scenery is always front and centre. We love the enclosed courtyard, with its outdoor fireplace, hot tub and TV screen, and the single-level layout makes socialising a dream. But our favourite spot is by far the oceanfront main bedroom – nothing beats waking up to coastal views each morning. When you're ready to explore, you'll find a few cafes and restaurants nearby, but for more options, make the short drive to La Jolla Village. Beach-wise, Pacific Beach, Windansea and Mission beaches are also within driving distance.

You can stroll out of your door and straight onto the beach, and return to rinse off in the outdoor shower before plunging into the pool.
