A block away from the sea and a short walk to La Jolla, inside this charming home you'll find a cosy, open-plan living/dining area with warm wooden floors and a wooden ceiling, plus a gorgeous bay window looking out across at the water. The master bedroom has one of those too, as well as elegant bedding and seriously comfortable bed. But it's the location that's the star of the show here. As well as the beach and La Jolla town, you're also within striking distance of the spectacular ecological reserve, La Jolla Cove. The water here is extraordinarily clear, and on a good day you can see more than 30km. So get your snorkel ready and dive on in.

The home can be found in La Jolla, directly across from Windansea Beach, and looking out over surfers’ favourite Big Rock. The views are incredible from almost every angle of the home, whether you’re in the lounge that’s been designed to offer a 180-degree vista of the ocean and the shoreline, or you’re cooking in the outdoor kitchen on the roof deck – from that elevation you can look forward to a 360-degree panorama. 

You can stroll out of your door and straight onto the beach, and return to rinse off in the outdoor shower before plunging into the pool. The heated pool and spa sit at the front of the home so boast ocean views. Sip Champagne in the spa while breathing in the sea air and hearing the waves crash ashore – absolute bliss. 

In the evenings, move up to the roof deck. Cook up a feast in the outdoor kitchen – or book a private chef to do the hard work while you doze on one of the loungers – then dine under the stars. Perched on a bluff overlooking the Pacific, this home offers spectacular panoramas of crashing waves and the area's famous Bird Rock. The sleek interior doesn't disappoint, either – although the floor-to-ceiling windows guarantee the scenery is always front and centre. We love the enclosed courtyard, with its outdoor fireplace, hot tub and TV screen, and the single-level layout makes socialising a dream. But our favourite spot is by far the oceanfront main bedroom – nothing beats waking up to coastal views each morning. When you're ready to explore, you'll find a few cafes and restaurants nearby, but for more options, make the short drive to La Jolla Village. Beach-wise, Pacific Beach, Windansea and Mission beaches are also within driving distance.

Be the first to bag a spot on the sand and set up camp for the day – the host supplies beach chairs, boogie boards and towels so you’ll be well equipped. That said, you’re so close that you can easily zip back for a forgotten umbrella or some sun cream. If you’re a thrill-seeker, hop on one of the supplied beach cruisers and ride the half mile down the front to Belmont Park’s Big Dipper. As the sun starts to dip in the sky, de-sand the kids ahead of pre-dinner drinks on the outdoor sofa. There’s a barbecue, and the sleek kitchen is a pleasure to cook in, but if you’d rather somebody else did the work, then you’re within walking distance of Mission Beach’s colourful restaurants and cafes.

Slightly further afield, La Jolla Cove is seven minutes away by car and the thrills of Belmont Park are just eleven minutes away. La Jolla Village is a treasure trove of fine dining and exclusive boutiques, and it’s twelve minutes away by car.

Things are just as bright in the third bedroom, where three queen-size beds mix up red furnishings against white walls. The mosaic shower room is perfect for washing the salt off and reminds us of a mermaid's lair. Elsewhere, houseplants and floral prints add to the tropical feel and if you want to enjoy a moment's meditation, head up to the sofas in the loft to enjoy a cup of herbal tea. Head into Downtown San Diego, approximately twelve miles away, for fascinating history, trendy trattorias, and high culture. Alternatively, make your way north to the coastal towns of Del Mar, Encinitas and Carlsbad, up to half an hour's drive from your home.

Although this home sits directly opposite San Diego's famous Mission Bay, there are plenty of perks at the address to stop you from immediately fleeing to the boardwalks and beaches.

The swimming pool and adjoining spa are glorious spots in which to enjoy the SoCal summers, while there's also an alfresco table under a parasol as well as a cabana with an impressively equipped outdoor kitchen whenever you're in need of a little shade. Add to that a rooftop terrace that offers glorious waterfront views, as well as a couple of balconies for good measure, and you've got an address in which you barely need to head inside.

That being said, you won't be disappointed when you finally get around to doing just that. The large glass windows let in plenty of sunshine and also look out to views of leafy palm trees. We're big fans of the sleek kitchen and equally stylish bathrooms, including one with a steam shower.

There may come a point when you fancy seeing a little more of the local area and Mission Bay sits literally just around the corner, offering plentiful opportunities for swimming and watersports. The centre of San Diego and Balboa Park both take a quarter of an hour to reach in the car, too.
