It’s easy to see that Tom and Max have an eye for design. Light-filled, minimalist, and incredibly elegant, it’s the kind of place you look forward to coming home after perusing Sag Harbor or walking by the beach. Speaking of sandy stretches, you’re close to the village centre, giving you easy access to several beaches, along with lots of wonderful restaurants, shops, and bars.

We love the huge, sociable sofa in the living room and the first-floor sun terrace in particular but nothing beats the location of this place. As if this wasn't enough, it’s also perfectly located for making the most of Springs, with the sea just a five-minute cycle away, and coastal walks and surf beaches within easy reach. On Saturdays, amble over to the Farmer’s Market to purchase fresh produce to whip up a feast. All in all, this is a delightful stay for young families or a group of old friends coming together.

It’s a four-minute stroll to the vast stretch of sand at Long Beach and a six-minute drive sees you in the heart of the pretty village of Sag Harbor. Out here, you’ve got a pristine swimming pool set in the wooden deck and a shower to wash sandy feet after a trip to the beach.

Inside, it’s a mix of crisp white walls and ink-black accents. Gabled, white-wash ceilings give that country cottage aesthetic and floor-to-ceiling windows fill the place with sunlight. Boho beanbag chairs and pot plants add a rustic touch to the living room and the sleek, modern kitchen is fit for gourmet meals. Underfloor heating in the plush bathrooms is another nice touch.

Designed by the late Peter Blake, it's mainly monochrome interior contrasts against the greenery framed by floor-to-ceiling windows. It's a peaceful spot, with an open layout and an air of calm – especially in the bedrooms. Its raised position makes it a unique place to stay, and allows it to really make the most of its surroundings. Spend time lazing on hammocks under the cherry tree or take to the water on the home's canoe.

At the bottom of the garden, you’ve got direct access to the serene waters of Noyack Bay, with kayaks, paddleboards and bicycles provided by your host. It’s a fifteen to twenty-minute walk (or five-minute cycle) to the restaurants and grocery store of Noyack, just along the coast from Sag Harbour. Your host is a designer, and it’s evident in the big, light-filled spaces inside, especially the gourmet kitchen which you might recognise from several cooking shows on the Food Network. Apart from the grand lounge, there are family hideaways tucked away and a big games room and cinema for time together. We love the surf shack in the garden – a lofty summer house with a wood-burner for chilly evenings.

There's a huge, private garden with direct access to the water and an illuminated dock, so lovers of the outdoors will be in their element. Hire a boat, or borrow the home's kayaks and paddleboard to make the most of its unique location. Inside, it's a bright and beautiful space with a truly loved and lived-in feel. Made up of two units, with a staircase joining them together, you'll find two kitchens, two living rooms, and a total of four bedrooms – plus a playroom which can act as a nursery. We loved the upper level's stunning dining area – large enough for you all to eat together, opening out to a large deck and offering panoramic views of the water (it's also where you'll find the piano if you're musically inclined). In the evenings, barbecue outdoors before lighting the fire pit and watching the stars come out one by one.

The Mortar & Pestle takes its name quite literally from the mortar and pestle collection in the dining room, a detail that represents the character and charm of this home. The many indoor and outdoor social spaces cater to groups of friends and families who love home-cooked meals and value one another's company. Large family meals are best enjoyed on the shaded terrace where you can delight in the views of the lush surroundings. The highlight of this home is without a doubt the saltwater swimming pool. Get to know the area by spending days out at the beach, exploring local villages or taking a walk in the Cedar Point County Park.

The Mortar & Pestle

This beautiful home is set within dense woodland on the northern East Hampton Coast, just two blocks from a private beach looking out over Gardiners Bay. Inside, there are beautiful hardwood floors, a cosy fireplace for cool evenings and cathedral-like ceilings over the dining area. The bedrooms have that softbox glow thanks to neutral tones and lightweight curtains that offer privacy without blocking the light (so you may want to pack an eye mask for lie-ins). Step outside onto the terrace, and you'll find a seating area centred around a fire pit and a separate dining table, plus a grill for alfresco cooking on long summer evenings. The well-maintained lawn is plenty big enough for the kids to play ball games and keep themselves entertained. If you can tear yourself away, you're just fifteen minutes' drive from an afternoon of wine tasting or twenty-five minutes to Montauk Brewing Company. For a more family-friendly day out, head over to the Hanks Pumpkintown or The Milk Pail for apple picking and corn mazes.

We're confident you'll never want to leave this plush, private bolthole, but The Hamptons really is the most stunning location, so be sure to pay a visit to East Hampton Village, just five–minutes away and for a relaxing sandy stroll, head to the glorious Bay Beaches.

This Hamptons house sits on seven acres of lush greenery, with plenty of space for both kids and adults to enjoy. Old meets new inside, with patterned rugs, antique furniture and an imposing fireplace, along with a slick kitchen complete with coffee grinder and juicer. When the weather is right, stretch out on the sun loungers on the deck before you take a refreshing dip in the pool. No detail has been forgotten here – there's a little kitchen garden where you can pick fresh herbs for your culinary creations, and two bikes are provided for you to get around. A ten minute cycle or five minute drive will take you into Southampton, with its bustling restaurants and boutiques, or down to the sands at Cooper's Beach. Golfers will also be delighted to know that there are several courses within swinging distance.

A Faithful Friend is nearly a hundred years old, but in terms of its luxury and comfort, it might as well be brand new. Once you’ve had a flick through the photos, you won’t be surprised to find out that it’s been featured in many design magazines. The patio, pool, and garden alone are impressive enough, but there's also a climatised screened porch off the kitchen, and a private deck off the main bedroom. And once you go inside, the atmosphere is high end and elegant without feeling pompous or stuffy. If all of this weren’t enough, there’s a small dock on a creek leading to Mecox Bay, so you can kayak down to the beach.


A Faithful Friend

Anyone with a subscription to HBO might recognise The Old Life-Saving Station. The home has featured in both Lena Dunham’s Girls, and more recently, The Undoing, starring Hugh Grant and Nicole Kidman. Staying here puts you in elite company, and it’s not hard to see why. It’s a unique house. Dating all the way back to the 1800s, when it was built as a coastguard station for the Long Island Sound, it’s been renovated since, but with lots of care put into maintaining the farmhouse atmosphere and the vintage furniture. The home is set on three acres of land on the North Fork, and from the veranda, you can hear the waves lapping against the shore of the private beach. It’s a magical setting, perfect for long summer afternoons (and if the water is too cold, there’s a 50ft pool as well). Colder evenings bring their own charm, as the vast kitchen and living room come into play. The large table seats fourteen easily, so every night feels like a dinner party, while the crackling fire in the other room sets the scene for an evening curled up on the sofa, with a hot drink in hand.

Mere steps from the beach, this four-bedroom farmhouse sleeps ten and is ideal for a large family getaway. Rustic it may be, but the interiors don’t skimp on style – white walls and pops of colour lend it a modern Scandinavian vibe. It may look Old World from the outside, but behind this home's traditional shingle exterior is a luxurious and playful home to call your own in The Hamptons. Packed with designer touches, we love the bright, double-height living space, with its character fireplace and huge windows. Parents can enjoy the privacy of the downstairs master suite, with the remaining three bedrooms upstairs. And perhaps while the little ones explore the play shed outside, you could pour a drink from the wet bar and grab a cosy spot on the patio. From here it's just a stroll into Bridgehampton Village when you're ready to explore – an area known for its great walks, cycle routes and water sports. Luckily, the host has provided a shed full of bikes, kayaks and outdoor gear (there's even an outdoor shower for afterwards). Cool off in the saltwater pool, then fire up the grill for a long, lazy meal on the patio or in the formal dining room – doors flung open to the pretty garden. It's just a five-minute drive to Water Mill, and a little further to Southampton and Sag Harbour.

Marble Muse

Not too far from the bright lights of New York City, this striking and stylish home sits near the beaches of Westhampton and among the protected marshlands of Long Island. The house itself is a modern twist on the traditional clapboard homes the area is famous for, with wraparound decks looking into the treetops to the rear and plenty of sliding doors allowing the indoors to seamlessly slip into the outdoor space. Downstairs, the living space is all about its designer leather sofa and chairs, as well as a large glass dining table. There's an excellent kitchen, with everything you'll need to cook at home, and even a den upstairs, complete with a sofa and office desk for working remotely. Outdoors, the huge deck is the star of the show, with seating areas, an alfresco dining spot, a cabana and a swimming pool. It's just a ten-minute drive to Westhampton beach to paddle in the Atlantic Ocean or visit one of the many excellent bars or restaurants.
